To Kevin Routley and all on the list: I read in my daily paper a few weeks back that anyone who "publishes" their e-mail address anywhere on the net is going to get spam. And a good proportion of the spam is going to be from very unsavoury sources. The problem seems to be that commercial companies trawl the net, with automatic programs, searching for anything that resembles an e-mail address. They then add these addresses to their mailing lists and send out tons of spam. I get a few such mails most days, usually about loans and credit, online gambling and, yes, pornography. I just delete them on the spot. The article I read suggested a few sites that people can report spam to but I didn't keep these addresses. Maybe someone else knows how to beat this problem? I got the impression there was really very little you can do. Various governments are trying to make the spamming process illegal but since the sources are often places like the Philippines, they aren't likely to get very far. The main point, I suppose, is that no-one on Avalon should feel they are being victimized by anyone else on the list, or that anyone is selling the Avalon mailing list to any spammer. It doesn't work like that. It's a universal problem. A car stopped down the road and then the dogs reappeared. The likelyhood of some stranger getting those two in a car is smaller then Brian Eno re-joining Roxy Music. Exactly. Spammers target *any* possible address at major ISPs and major web-based mail providers (yahoo, Hotmail, etc.) -- the spammers may have simply used any combination of "routley" and an ISP hoping to land a hit. They have software that generates these random ones, and sometimes the traces of the programming method are visible in the e-mail -- I get stuff with 50 "outdoorminer@" iterations in the "To" field. Also, Mr. Routley might check his privacy settings at his his ISP to make sure that he has requested that his e-mail address not be shared with any "partners" of the company. Also be sure when doing "innocuous" things like sending internet greeting cards that you check or uncheck boxes to keep those sites from selling your address. >The article I read suggested a few sites that people can report spam to >but I didn't keep these addresses. Things may have changed recently, but it was my understanding that responding to the "take me off the list" prompt is often treated as confirmation that your e-mail addy *does* exist, and can trigger off more waves of spam -- even while the borderline-legal company that spammed you in the first place insists that they've removed you from their list and they won't sell your address. later, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Apr 2002 18:54:45 -0400 From: "Grant Goggans" Subject: [AVALON] BF in Norfolk is CLOSED, I say CLOSED. Apparently, while the "closed" message made it to the digest, I think the non-digest readers must not have received the subsequent announcement that the 1988 Norfolk B+P offer is closed. I say this because a few minutes ago, about 34 hours after opening the offer and 30 hours after closing it, I got yet another request for this show -- that made about the twentieth since I called it closed. As a good rule of thumb, B+P offers rarely last more than six hours. I usually make the offer when I get to work and close it before lunch. If you're shooting for a copy of a B+P, please, if possible, check to see whether it's closed before replying. And don't be upset if I don't reply. I have a hectic enough schedule as it is, and prefer not to spend my day turning good folks down. Other Avalonians will be announcing it on-list in a few weeks, and there will certainly be offers in other forums. - --Grant _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Apr 2002 19:33:26 -0400 From: Dennis Laliberte Subject: [AVALON] B+P Offer: Milan 2001 Hello, I'm offering a six copies of "Edizioni di Milano" from September '01 to the list.
