I get that, honestly I do, and I'm obviously very grateful myself to the folks who have always--and continue to--keep the list on top of everything. And it would certainly be nice if there were an official webpage that had up to date news. But it isn't unusual for an artist not to have an official page, or to have one which isn't as up to date as a fan page or a fan list. The important thing is that the information from the record company and the fan club *is* getting out to us via the folks you mention, and I speak only for myself when I say I am grateful, although I suspect I speak for many others as well in that case. At the end of the day, does it really matter exactly where the information comes from as long as we get the information? I think it's clear almost immediately even to the casusal fan that vivaroxymusic.com or roxyrama.com are much more useful sites than bryanferry.com. But hey, not eveyone "gets" the power of the Internet or the World Wide Web as a promotional tool for artists, even these many years later. At least the word is getting out in one form or another. He was into cutting up dolls and throwing pieces into the audience - theatrics like that. He hanged himself as well. It was all some time ago. I didn't really enjoy it, it was so overstated, the sort of overstatement I find very embarrassing. But the audience reaction was satisfactory, especially from the younger people." Steve Harley - "I haven't heard anything he's done except the singles that have been played on radio. He's been accused of basing a lot of what he does on Bowie and myself and I must agree a lot of idiosyncracies that come out in other people's work are used. I'd be very embarrassed if I were in his shoes. In his shoe really, because he's still wearing one of mine." TTFN Scotty Yahoo! This reviewer thinks Jealous Guy was a solo ferry record and... ...he really doesn't like Spedding! But I think this piece will still shift a few units. Guy - --------------------- Bryan Ferry: Frantic Virgin, #14.99 *** BRYAN Ferry has already done too much. Such was the success of the second incarnation of Roxy Music, with Ferrys languid vocals bouncing from the glitterball of slowed-up disco, that it was easy to forget the glammy rush, the experimentation, and the European strangeness, of their early records. Solo Ferry has always seemed a less reliable prospect - best remembered for the tearful memorial to John Lennon, Jealous Guy. Frantic he wasnt. Perhaps inspired by Roxys recent reunion, Ferry seems to have reconnected with parts of his old self. Billed as his first songwriting album since 1994, Frantic is notable, firstly for the quality, and nature, of the cover versions. There are two Dylan songs, a bluesy skiffle with understated strings, and Ferry warbling oddly under the middle eight - and Dont Think Twice, which comes unvarnished, with a distant piano, and vocal phrasing which could have come from one of Johnny Cashs recent albums. Leadbellys Goodnight Irene is done in a Cajun campfire style, and Don Nixs blues standard Goin Down chugs along. The self-penned material contains several fine examples of glitterball Roxy - see Goddess of love, with Ferry warbling eerily about Marilyn Monroe ("Platinum blonde, is it true that you have more fun?"); San Simeon, a reminder of the many things Simple Minds stole and misused; Hiroshima, with Radioheads Jonny Greenwood on guitar. The best is saved for last. I Thought is a collaboration with the spirit of weird Roxy, Brian Eno, and it is simply lovely. Like the best of Ferrys work, it sounds oddly logical, dreamily irresistible. So little time, so many tuxedos. (NB: one star has been deducted for the guitar playing of Chris Spedding, who seems to have drifted in from a Dire Straits session). ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 11:43:23 +1200 From: Kamaya.Yates@police.govt.nz Subject: [AVALON] Frantic in my hot little hands hi all I went and graduated from Uni on Wednesday - it only took me 8 years to actually get to the ceremony! (Sam Neill was there getting an honorary doctorate - very nice man- still very very handsome much in the mold of our Bryan in fact I believe they are of the same vintage anyway I digress) My lovely friend Nadia gave me Frantic as a graduation present! I didn't even realise that it had been released here - I was left in much trepidation as she said she hated it! This is the girl who went to Roxy with me in Sydney who loved remake/remodel and If there is Something so much that we played them both over and over for 2 hours on a road trip...She said the harmonica left her cold and she even said the word...BLUEGRASS but his voice she said is fantastic. SO here I am listening seriously for the first time and I definitely prefer the new material to the covers although 'Its all over now' is the best of the bunch -and I so agree with whoever it was who said what the hell is goodnight Irene doing on that album!! Maybe it is some bizarre tribute to 'o Brother where art thou?' But I think that it will grow on me the same way that psalm did...maybe - I am still not sure. I love Hiroshima...cruel, San Simeon and the rest! I hope BF tours this part of the world. There were big ads for Frantic in all the Sunday papers today so heres hoping for sales to encourage tour activity here!! It was almost unknown that after Hiroshima Re-make/Re-model showed their talent in performing a live version of San Simeon. Just with a bit mor ebeat then the album version, sort of a mix between an old demo and the one on the album. After that another couple of great songs ending with For your pleasure and of course Re-make/Re-model. Like I said a short show because the rest of the night the stage belonged to Ch-Changes a Dutch Bowie tribute band, all in all a good night full of great music .... I bet all of you who weren't there now feel a bit like a jealous guy :) Next time is the best time, .... but this time was great too !
