To be honest, in a way, I'm glad that Chris Turner and John O'Brien informed us all - at least it looks like we got the first shot at tickets. Having said that, a bloke I spoke to at the Manchester Box Office had said that he'd seen it advertised in the local paper this morning. Many thanks again Chris and John (and Jim Lawn) Aleks Yahoo! Dear Avalon List, I have a problem. I`m being teased by my colleagues continuously. They know I`m a big fan of Bryan Ferry, and they keep inventing various ways of teasing me. For instance, recently we had a debate about which of the singers is better - Bryan Ferry or Britney Spears (note that they are NOT big fans of B.Spears!), and I allowed myself to declare that Ms Spears wasn`t even deserving of sweeping the floors in Ferry`s house. Next day they presented me with a sheet of paper (as if printed out from the Internet) which said that Ferry and Spears were going to sing together in a concert. I nearly collapsed with a heart attack. (Although, who knows - Ferry`s charm and intelligence would be sufficient to even out Spears` childishness.) Only later they confessed that it was a fake, a fabrication. Let me give you another example. Just yesterday they sent a message at my mobile phone saying that Ferry was going to give an interview on our local radio. They had been teasing me with this for a week or so, therefore I just choked helplessly at these lies and thought to myself how far they could really go. The climax came when one of them called me up (being out of the office) and told me to hurry and switch on the radio. That was of course too much, but o.k., I`m a fool for Ferry, and I DO go and switch it on. And what do I hear? ".....I heard him play on [.....] and invited him to play on this, and he plays on this track "Hiroshima" which suits his style very much..." Am I dreaming??!! NO!! It WAS indeed a promotional interview with Bryan Ferry, he was talking with the moderator on the phone. What did he say? Check out my next post! (I did manage to record a great part of it, too.) Or visit http://www.radioswh.lv/wwwnew/sakums.php3?logo=1&v=6&ban1=ti01 and choose to play the program either in Windows Radio standard (Mediaplayer) or in Real Audio G2 standard. The program will be replayed this SAT at 16:00 Latvian time (at 14:00 in the UK). AND, I do love my colleagues. Even though they are immune to Ferrymania (although they respect the singer), yet they have his name on their lips, at least when they meet me. I just thought they ought to treat me with more care instead of teasing me - after all, I`m perhaps the only representative of the Fanatus Ferricus species in this little country! God knows it`s hard to survive without any soulmates around. Thanks to this list and its people, I`m not alone. Have a great weekend everyone. Love, Irena in Riga, LATVIA P.S. Hope I haven`t offended any B.Spears` fans here... _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 13:16:07 +0100 From: "Duncan Watkins" Subject: [AVALON] Frantic Artwork (again) It's not Christmas is it? Let ME go on the record to say I was not one of the whiners. I was going to LIKE it sight unseen. It seems that Frantic is getting almost universal approval. I have nothing to complain about just jealous of the fact that our friends across the big pond have more chances to see him than we do over here. Yes we must wait, but as the ATGB and the Roxy Reunion tour of last year pointed out, it was well worth the wait. I was just thinking out loud. I know there is a lot to mount a tour not to mention the cost. We have covered this before. I just hope that Bryan has a few coins left ( or get some sort of underwriter) to mount an American tour. I for one will wait and moan ( in private) until he gets here. Reminds me of a skit by Sam Clemens ( Mark Twain), THE JUMPING FROG, IN ENGLISH, THEN IN FRENCH, THEN CLAWED BACK INTO A CIVILISED LANGUAGE ONCE MORE BY PATIENT, UNRENUMERATED TOIL. The original FROG opened like this: " Well, there was a feller here once by the name of Jim Smiley, in the winter of '49 - or maybe it was the spring of '50, I don't recollect exactly, though what makes me think it was one or the other is because I remember the big flume warn't finished when I first came to the camp; but anyway, he was the curiosest man about always betting on anything that turned up you ever see, if he could get anybody to bet on the other side; and if he couldn't he'd change sides..." " Sam translated it back thus: "It there was one time here an individual known under the name of Jim Smiley: it was in the winter of '49, possibly well at the spring of '50, I no me recollect not exactly. This which me makes to believe that it was the one or the other, it is that I shall remember that the grand flume is not achieved when he arrives at the camp for the first time, but of all sides he was the man the most fond of to bet which one have seen, betting upon all that which is presented, when he could find an adversary; and when he not if it could not, he passed to the side opposed..." How refreshing it is that Ferry's playing a theatre tour instead of the arenas of last year, but why RAH again? I think the sound there is awful, surely the Royal Festival or even the Palladium again would be better for a London gig, I presume its economics (wonderful architecture though) I know I'm biased but I believe that De Montfort has some of the best acoustics in the country, many a 70's band recorded their shows there. If anyone intends on taping any of the shows I recommend Leicester De Mont.believe me you get good quality recordings... so I'm told. I was lucky enough to receive a late phone call and be invited to the recording at the BBC, along with a handful of others. For those of you outside the UK, Michael Parkinson is the country's most venerable and beloved interviewer, whose show was unmissable in the 70's, and who has been rightfully restored to our screens in recent years. On arrival, we were escorted to the famous Green Room for pre-show drinks. On being taken to the studio, I was seated in the third row, on the music stage side of the audience, prime position in my book. It was an interesting insight into how TV is made, as Parkinson is recorded in virtually one take, presumably to maintain its immediacy. Interview shows are odd, as there is something a little surreal about witnessing a private conversation from a distance of twenty five yards away. The stage is much smaller and less grand than it appears on TV. We were entertained by warm-up man Ray Turner, and by the Laurie Holloway Quartet who played a nice jazz piece followed by a great rendition of As Time Goes By, coincidentally. It was only when Parky came out to speak to us, followed by his familiar theme music that I started to realise that I was actually there...in the place where so many greats have been interviewed...a very odd feeling indeed. When I was growing up as a young film and music fan, watching Parkinson was the only access I had to my heroes like James Stewart, James Mason, John Wayne, Jimmy Cagney and the like. Sadly the really big stars aren't around now, and I was just a little disappointed when the line-up was announced, but it turned out to be a fine show. First guest up was 'WWTBA Millionaire' presenter Chris Tarrant, very waggish and entertaining and yet at times quite poignant in his conversation. Bryan's appearance followed. Looking very tanned, slender and fit, but perhaps not as smiley as usual, he was wearing a sharp dark grey suit with a black shirt. Ferry sang 'Goddess of Love' live over the pre-recorded backing track. He was in very good voice. The musicians were Mick Green, Thommo, Lucy, Julia replete with harp, Mark Smith on bass, Colin on piano and Sarah Brown with the same two backing singers who appeared at TOTP2. The girls also sang live, supplemented by Lucy. CT's Sad Attention-To-Detail Moment: Ferry had his hair parted on the opposite side to usual, right to left. This was the first time I have seen Bryan performing before an audience not made up predominantly of Ferry fans, and I have to say that he went down very well, even allowing for the efforts of Quentin the Stage Manager to whip up a fervour. It was reassuring to know that BF has a universal appeal. There was a distinct gasp followed by spontaneous applause amongst the crowd when Parky announced BF was to be on the show. He said that they had been trying to get Bryan to appear since the 1970's. After this brief appearance Ferry left the stage not to return. although I understand that further recordings had been made earlier in the day for possible, I repeat, possible future broadcast. Returning to the interviews we saw up-and-coming comedy actor Rob Brydon of 'Marion and Geoff' fame, who stole the show really with his witty responses and clever impressions of Welsh greats, Tony Hopkins, Richard Burton and Tom Jones. A star in the making here I feel. After a jaunty Latin song from grinning Mavericks lead singer Raul Mallo, the interviews ended with respected actor Timothy Spall, who will shortly appear in the resurrected 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet'. He spoke of his views on acting and his recovery from leukaemia. We retired with the great and the good to the Green Room for canapis and drinks to discuss the events. Bryan was not in attendance. Without being indiscreet, I've learned that there is much Ferry activity in the pipeline, and I hope to bring you up to speed when the time is right. As we disappeared into the night, I exchanged a nod and a smile with Parky, who is taller than I imagined, and who appeared the very epitome of bonhomie as he chatted with Rob Brydon. The show's transmission will be on Saturday week.
