Reecey... Well I could, but that wasn't my first time. Lost my Roxy cherry on November 11th 1972 at the Newcastle City Hall. It's not so much the concert that I can remember all these years later, more the terrible, terrible clothes we were wearing and the smell of bonfires as we clomped up to the Forest Hall bus stop in our platforms en route to the Toon. We had balcony seats quite far off and so I was impressed by the lighting as much as anything. Can't remember a thing about the supports (East of Eden and Rainmaker) but I do remember not knowing where to focus. Andy in the spotlight with oboe, or Eno over on stage left twiddling in the darkness, or that bloke over on the right with the wobbly voice. I plumped for Ferry, mainly because I was transfixed by the double zipped fly on his satin trousers (remember I was a prepubescent lass back then, and Anthony Price was cutting gussets like no other designer). I too (like Steve) have a vague vision of them all arms aloft during "when we were young". But I remember also, it transformed my life. I'd already been boring everyone senseless in the common room at school with the pre released album and was dying to see them live, and I wasn't disappointed. I didn't have to wait long for the second tour(March 1973) and I made up my mind very quickly that one concert per tour was never going to be enough. Hence the ridiculous situation I find myself in today where I support my music as passionately as I do my footie team, but with a bit more success involved. I gave the CD a rest on my trip to Oklahoma to bury my mom so as to avoid any bad associations, but every morning and every night in the motel, I was aware of various songs playing in my head. In fact, it was then that I finally came to Hiroshima, a late starter for me. On the drive home, I broke out some live Roxy and then, finally, Frantic, after the few-day interlude without it. It was like a warm breeze through my hair, hot blood rushing in my veins, the coolness of leaves on my cheek, truly a field of peace. ~ I think my first love will remain my favorite(s): "Ja Nun Hons Pris/Fool for Love," romance in its most timeless form. I, of course, loved the "San Simeon" lyrics as soon as I saw them a couple of months ago. I thought the music was almost incidental to them. Now the music is drawing me in more. "Nobody Loves Me" is a cut almost as strong as "Fool for Love" but without the advantage of the "Ja Nun Hons Pris" prelude, which I think is essential to "Fool for Love" in all ways, musically, lyrically, and symbolically. (I need to revise my "thumbnail review" to 2 Kings, 1 queen, 1 princess, and 1 Freudian wand). ~ "I Thought" is infectious from the start and only becomes more so. It is a wonderful note on which to end the album, peaceful and airy, reminiscent of "Another Green World." I am easily irritated by harmonica, but Bryan's harmonica on this cut is balm to my dark soul. Only he and Neil Young have been able to make me appreciate harmonica. Their unique styles come through so clearly in it. You cannot hear Bryan's harmonica without realizing how much of the thing you think of as Roxy is Bryan's style and Bryan's alone straight from the soul. ~ I think Dillon is right about "Goddess of Love" being the single. I can see it being a popular long-term DJ dance club choice. I can't think of anything I've ever heard that reminds me of "Cruel." Anyone who thinks Bryan has fully charted the catacombs and is simply retracing old steps is wrong. "Going Down" and "One Way Love" are both great songs with restrained grooves. I particularly like the retro tamped-down drum and minimalist incidentals in the latter. ~ I guess "Goodnight Irene" is competing for the darkest song on Frantic, made more insane by its singsong lightness. Of the two Dylan covers, I prefer "Don't Think Twice It's All Right," but I confess Dylan has not been a lasting influence on me, though his simple lyrics are brilliant. ~ Thanks, Bryan and the very talented musicians for a brilliant piece of early 21st Century art. ~ XXX, Paula ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2002 16:03:53 -0500 From: "Judy Kaufman" Subject: RE: [AVALON] My first time >From: Daniel Atterbom >fotball (soccer for you yanks and victims of "the war of yankee >agression") I don't feel challenged or victimized as we have the L.A. On first hearing, I have to say that I think this is the best solo album that Bryan has done (at least since TBSB). The 90-second "tasters" are still in my head a couple of hours on from playing them. Fool for Love, I Thought, Baby Blue and Nobody Loves Me are the outstanding tracks for me at this stage. Personally I have always preferred this style to the over-complicated layered work of, say, Mamouna or even Boys and Girls. The voice comes through and is complemented by the accompanying musicians and production, rather than getting lost. I've watched the World Cup tho' all I ever do is see which players are cute since no one ever explained the rules to me. I had a lot of fun playing FIFA on Playstation even tho' I had no idea what I was doing. I once got confused and kicked the ball into my goal and was booed by the commentators. Oops. Next time I am in the UK, a friend will take me to see his fave team, Watford. Maybe he'll explain the game to me too. (The only sport I understand and enjoy is tennis.) Time to sleep....
