I was just a 'wee lassie' at the time and I bunked off school at lunchtime that day because I simply could not contain my excitement! I remember standing in the foyer before the gig, absolutely agog at some of the weird and wonderful styles of the 'good looking boys' in the audience - especially the Eno lookalikes! I was a bit disappointed that I would not be seeing Eno that night as he had fairly recently left the band, but boy was Eddie Jobson an impressive replacement! I had not yet heard the Stranded album (not sure that it was in the shops yet?) so imagine how thrilling it was to hear songs like 'A Song for Europe' and 'Mother of Pearl' for the first time under such circumstances. The Glasgow crowd were going absolutely berserk, stamping their feet and chanting 'Roxy, Roxy' for all their life as only Glasgow crowds can. I remember quite clearly when they were doing 'Street Life' (which they opened with) there was a bit where they all stopped playing and lined up along the front of the stage chanting 'Street life, street life, street life, what a life' etc etc and clicking their fingers - I still get shivers thinking about it! The highlight of the evening had to be when Bryan reappeared on stage for the encore resplendent in his kilt. The encore numbers if I remember rightly were 'Do the Strand' and 'Re-make, re-model'. It was a magical evening, one of the best nights of my life. If anyone else was there that night or remembers more details of the playlist and costumes for the Stranded tour, I'd love to hear your reminiscences. Incidentally, I hope the man will be donning the kilt again on June 1st at Edinburgh Castle - what a treat that would be! I can't remember the support act, but my seat was off center, about 10 rows from the stage, and seated two spots away were Andy Warhol and Amanda Lear. And then there was the Manifesto tour at the Palladium 1n 1979 (same theatre - - different name), where I had fourth row seats, directly behind Eddie Jobson, John Wetton and Lisa Robinson (the rock reviewer for Creem and other era rock magazines). Warhol was there, too. After the show, I was on 13th Street behind the theatre hoping to see the band come out, when Bowie and Eno came running out towards their limo, and one of them stepped on my foot as they ran by. I finally got to meet Ferry by the stage door after the Mamouna tour show at the Beacon in Nov. 1994. I've been lucky enough to have seen at least one show from every Roxy/Ferry tour since 1975. Each to their own and I think you make some very valid points about the sound. We were right at the back of the circle where the sound was pretty well balanced. Where were you sitting - downstairs maybe? I agree the drum loops were way over amplified and the real drummer was lazy, but I actually liked being "swamped" by the sound and thought generally the whole thing worked a treat (for me anyway). The melding of rock/dance and classical was the bit that got me interested in Craig Armstrong in the first place, so the dichotomy of such in concert was what I was hoping for anyway. I adored what he did for the soundtrack of Plunkett and MacCleane which was basically housed up quadrilles and I loved the result of such unlikely bedfellows. I also really liked the off kilter vocals of the Asian singer you mentioned (I haven't got the programme in front of me and can't remember her name). But I've always been a "black note" kinda gal. (Although I thought the Mini Mouse like singer from Alpha murdered This Love). Simon also went and I think we all agree Evan Dando was either too jet lagged or spaced to contribute much, although there was a sort of Lou Reed, Tom Waites fatigue about him! A real shame you missed David McAltmont, he was the highlight for me and I will be looking out for any forthcoming Butler/MacAltmont lives gigs in the future. And we've all remarked on Reecey being the headliner of the evening! I did say that he rambled on between songs like Reecey too - come to think of it Reecey, where were you on Sunday night? Mind you, he played piano more like John O'Brien. I think this is just another illustration of how we can all go to concerts and come out with a different take, as seen all the way through the ATGB tour. And for me, it's what makes the world so interesting. But a little bit of me suspects that you were really just miffed at missing Eno the night before and the opportunity of getting your chest autographed! They don't hit the shelves till roughly 15th of the month though. If MOJO are positive that will mean most of the major circulation music mags will have given the thumbs up. If the newspapers follow suit then we'll have a very well recieved record on our hands:)) Then all thats left to be done is finally crack the top 10 UK album chart after a 10 year gap. Ferry's had a number of no 11 (Mamouna) and 12 compilations excluding the Roxy hits last year. Hopefully, it'll climb higher than ATGB (No 16) in 1999. But the biggest worry is that the record will drop out of the charts after a short time. Mamouna lasted a miserable 4 weeks in the top 75 whereas ATGB held a bit of ground and stayed for more than 10 weeks. I know its not all about charts and music mag stars but we want to see Mr Ferry as a major label record artist till he retires. God forbid if he has to turn to eagle records! I see Simple Minds are reeling after their new album went to No 80 after zero promo. It's a good record too. Also, my very own website subject, Robert Palmer, saw his last record sink for the same reason. The list is growing... The Minds' video got no airplay anywhere apart from Q and hence Bryans right not to sink cash into making a video. TV appearances should help more. regards Bryan - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Simon Galloway" Date: Wednesday, April 10, 2002 4:36 pm Subject: [AVALON] Frantic in Time Out... > Well, they don't like it there! Time to drag that story out again. First Roxy gig (actually, first major gig of any kind) was April 6th, 1973 (anniversary just passed !) at the Greens Playhouse, Glasgow. A mere 60p don't ya know, to see firstly Lloyd Watson, followed by Sharks (great ! - and including Speddo, if memory serves) then Roxy Music. I wish I could remember more - hey, it was a long time ago - but they did start with Do The Strand. I remember thinking how strange it was, that they didn't appear to have a 'front man'. Eno one side, Ferry the other, and it wasn't until close to the end of the gig that Ferry ventured bravely to centre stage. 'Grey Lagoons' was a riproaring second encore, Ferry esconced in centre by now, and Eno had changed specially for the encore, from the peacock jacket, to a glam silvery number. Andy in those bubble trousers, of course. The week after the gig, I remember picking up the Sharks Album, from my fave record shop in Glasgow (called 'Listen'- aha !) and I've still got that Album tucked away somewhere today. Fast forward to November 2nd, and Greens Playhouse had now become the Glasgow Apollo. Roxy supported by Leo Sayer, who was great ! Everyone wondered who the 'clown' was, and he got a great reception. There was 7 of us, in Box L, just above Eddie. It was either always that, or Row K of the Stalls which became the fave seats later on. Curiously, despite being row K, it was 8 rows back - any further forward and it was crooked neck time, the stage was so high. I really loved the Apollo. So did the Band. Nowadays, Bry occasionally ventures out in Tartan trousers for a Glasgow encore, (he did for ATGB encore in that 'Armadillo' Theatre place in 99) but not the kilt. Maybe he'll be brave enough in Edinburgh this year. Jocelyn, it's your turn - a full review of the Rainbow 73, with the big eagle type crests, and choir etc. We're waiting... November 18th 1972.... I was 15 years old & I managed to persuade the most gorgeous girl in school to acompany me (Christine) I had to queue for what seemed like hours as by this time Roxy were begining to take off. Having finally got in they stopped the couple behind me from entering, "house full" I'd only just made it & that moment changed my life. Memories of the show are hazy (it was 30 yrs ago) but I do remember Manzaneras blistering solo during " Would You Believe" by this time I was leaping up & down, & Mackay, Manzanera & Eno all raising there hands slowly singing "when you were young.." during "If There Is.." Above all is was a great spectacle, to a 15yr old it was a whole new world. It wasn't the greatest Roxy gig I've ever seen, but it was a point in my teens when I turned into someone else. As for Christine she dumped me the next day saying " You're boring.. why don't you like good singers like David Cassidy.." Perhaps she was right........... Hello, Bryan is on Belgian tv 13 april 20.40. I think it is about the new cd. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Apr 2002 17:07:15 -0400 From: "Heather James" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Re: looking for a photo...
