At the moment the number of dates that have been announced in the UK is less than I would have expected. I think that "gig"-wise, Bryan is sort of stuck between selling out "smaller" venues (3,000+) and not filling "arenas" (say 8,000+). I would guess that the "summer concerts" could be a good earner for him. It's been debated before and I think that the end result was that the promoter seemed to have a huge influence on venue and ticket prices. I am hoping that further UK tour dates will be announced in smaller venues, although the current trend seems to be for bands to play outdoor gigs in the summer. I think that the "As Time Goes By" tour/release was quite sucessful so maybe thats the approach thats being taken again. Aleks Yahoo! We are fortunate on this list to have people that are privvy to advance information about tours releases etc... Any good-will that these people have with their sources would be damaged if they released information before they were allowed to. At the end of the day, the avalon list seems to get to know about tours, ticket sales etc... before the general public. Personally, I would rather it stay that way (with a handful of people "knowing about things" before the rest of us), rather than having no information at all. The reason that Avalonians have been able to obtain better seats for gigs etc.. in the past is because of the people who work "behind the scenes" to bring us the information. Aleks Yahoo! I just wanted to write to recommend the excellent, excellent information services provided by Chris Turner (www.roxyrama.com) and John O'Brien (www.vivaroxymusic.com). I have been an Avalon list member for quite a while now, which is where I found out about these two great sites. I am signed up to both of these guys' mailing lists and that way I can rest assured that all the information I need to know about tour dates, release dates, tv and radio appearances etc etc wings its way to my personal mail-box at the earliest possible opportunity. It was thanks to Chris Turner, for example, that I managed to secure centre front row tickets for one of the Roxy gigs in Glasgow last year, and it's thanks to John O'Brien that I have the coolest e-mail address (my name @ vivaroxymusic.com) with which, as a life-long Roxy fan, I am absolutely thrilled to bits! Thanks you guys, I'll love you forever! Anyone who wants to keep their finger on the Roxy pulse, I strongly recommend joining these mailing lists. All the best. If you would like copies of either boot (or both), you must (borrowing from one of Grant's messages!): 1. Be willing to send good-quality blanks and a SASE for your copy. 2. Be one of the first five people to reply to this offer. 3. Tell me whether you're willing to make copies as well (about three or four, nothing maddening). 4. Reply by Friday, April 12. 5. Understand that if you don't hear back from me, you must take my silence as a polite apology, that you were not one of the first five. (But you have nothing to lose in trying!) 6. Some of the dates on the list have not been confirmed and might not go ahead. I would stress to anyone making summer holiday plans etc based on this tour to wait until the confirmed details are published. Here's a bit of trivia about tour guitarist Mick Green. Green didn't play on the Johnny Kidd and the Pirates first releases of 'Please Don't Touch' or 'Shakin' All Over' only joining the band in 1962 (although he seems to have picked up the chords OK now!) Mick was in the Pirates until 1964, when he left to have a chart career with Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas (From A Window, Trains and Boats and Planes). Here's why he left Kidd: "I hated every minute of it. All the boys had their wives with them and I was stuck in a bedsit. It was cold and miserable and we used to follow this dog act on stage. I got a call from Robin MacDonald of the Dakotas (who backed Billy J. Kramer) saying they were off to Hawaii in ten days time and from there were going to Australia, which seemed a good idea at the time. Well, I couldn't be in both bands at once..." Johnny Kidd died in a road smash in 1966. Green later joined Cliff Bennett to record, amongst other tracks, a hit version of the Beatles' 'Back In The USSR' (I have this, the Pirates, and his Kramer work in my collection - although I hadn't realised the Green connection before). By coincidence, leather-voiced Bennett's other earlier big hit was a brassy R&B version of One Way Love, as song which Bryan covers on Frantic. Later on, Green had a four and a half year spell playing the Las Vegas chicken-in-a-basket circuit as Englebert Humperdinck's guitarist! Here's what Greeny said about his spell with Enge: "I left Engelbert because I was losing touch with reality. When you spend half of every year in Las Vegas with just about everything you want laid on you feel you are in Disneyland. Life becomes too easy for your own good. I returned home in '74 and formed Fresh Meat who later became Hard Meat before evolving into Shanghai. I (even) learned to read music when I was with Engelbert." I wonder if he said Please Release Me... Green's choppy rhythmic guitar style influenced many others, like Pete Townshend, but a particular acolyte was Wilko Johnson of Dr Feelgood (who took their name from a Pirate's B-side) Johnson and Green have collaborated a number of times over the years, including the co-penned song 'Going Back Home' on 1976 chart-topping album 'Stupidity' The same year Green, Frank Farley and Johnny Spence reformed the classic Pirates line-up to gig again as the godfathers of punk, even supporting the Clash at one time. Green returned to public prominence in the 1990's with a number of session gigs, most notably with Paul McCartney circa Run Devil Run. Green is also regular guitarist for Van Morrison, who includes a version of 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' amongst his regular set. (Incidentally, when Morrison played the song in Dublin on February 13th 1993 he was joined on stage by Bono, Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Costello, Nanci Griffith, Chrissie Hynde and Steve Winwood. Oh, and a guy called Bob Dylan came on to play the harmonica...!) If, like me, you were lucky enough to witness the Pirates' tight-as-two-coats-of-paint performance at TOTP2, it might interest you to know that the replacement drummer (Simon Holdgate, standing in for Frank Farley), and regular bassist Johnny Spence had only met earlier that morning. The band tore up versions of "Shakin' All Over", " Honey Hush" and " Peter Gunn". I've seen the Pirates a few times over the years, but never as good as that. There's a comprehensive history of the Pirates at www.johnnykidd.co.uk Pub Rock Man ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Apr 2002 19:11:25 -0700 From: "PeteK" Subject: [AVALON] I forgot More than you'll ever know I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know was also recorded By Elvis Costello and Tom Waits performing a duet on an album called Such Unlikely Covers.
