You guys are one of the nicest bunch of people in the world. I can't wait to meet some of you on this year's tour. I was wondering if anyone knows of good web site or book with Roxy Music and/or Bryan Ferry solo tablature. I've found a handful on the internet, but half of those are covers, and the other half are mainly the singles. If not online, perhaps there is a good book for sale that is still in print (I couldn't find one of any of the main online bookstores)? I'd sincerely appreciate any feedback or suggestions. I am going to now as I suspect my comments about sharing information with the list were misinterpreted and I'd like to clarify and expound up on them. (you've been warned--delete now.) Let's get this point cleared up first: I didn't ask for information to be posted to the list because I'm too lazy to seek it out myself. I asked for it to be posted to the list because that's what I thought Avalon was about. I can't speak for others--although I suspect many of you felt the same way--but when I joined Avalon, I was so excited to find a group of people who knew who Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music were. Back then we didn't have any pipeline to information and we didn't have much Ferry activity to report on, but the fact that we were fans together was enough for us (and in fact Gene's post about rummaging through his posters and magazines reminded me of those conversations). Then, as the list grew and the word got about the album of 30s standards Mr. Ferry had recorded (first introduced to us as the marvelous _Pastiche_ hoax) and news of the real album and tour, we found ourselves in possession of actual information about release dates, concert dates, band members, and the like. For many of us, the release of and the tour following _As Time Goes By_ was our first chance to be able to discuss the recorded and live performances of Mr. Ferry as a group. Then last summer we had the wonderful experience of the Roxy reunion and the chance for list members to meet-up. And all of this was in addition to city-specific meetings that had nothing to do with the tour which had been held. I'm not saying that anyone owes anything to the list--certainly the decision to share or not share information does not carry a "right or wrong" connotation. But I will say that I am disappointed that a request that information be shared directly with the list was first rebuffed and then mocked. Maybe it's because I don't look at this exercise in fandom as a competition or a contest. I think it's great that Chris runs an informational mailing list with over 3000 subscribers and hosts roxyrama.com. I also think it's wonderful he keeps up Kicki's old page and that our marvelous John O'Brien has the equally marvelous vivaroxymusic.com. How could any of these things, which assist in bringing information to folks who love the same music we do, be in competition? Aren't we working for the same goal? The same thing goes for the various web-based fora. Each of these items offers something slightly different to accomodate the Roxy/Ferry fans out there. As a give and take discussion list, Avalon offers community of a specific sort, made all the more so unique as it was the first of these fan venues, and the virtual birthplace for a number of them. I suppose it dates me--even more than my upcoming birthday will--to say that I still think of mailing lists as virtual communities. But I know many of you feel the same way: why else were we all so excited to plan list meet-ups prior to the shows last summer? Nothing on that scale happened during the ATGB tour, so clearly over the intervening months the list had become a closer-knit community. Speaking only for myself, I can't tell you how much fun it is to find that you will be in London for an evening and to be able to fill it with the company of people you know, whether virtually or in real life. I don't have much of value to give this group: I don't have a large collection of live shows, and I don't have a CD burner, so I can't contribute to trees. As an underprivileged American, I don't have video material I can contribute to the video projects. I have no contacts so I can't get items for the AMA auctions, nor can I provide information about upcoming releases and/or concert dates. (I did have a lovely man from the _Financial Times_ contact me during the ATGB tour to let me know about the 'stately homes' tour, and someone from a radio station contact me about something I now can't remember, and I couldn't wait to share that information with everyone else on the list, even as it did me no good as all of the events took place in the UK.) And so I appreciate everyone who contributes these items to our group. And I know I'm not alone in that. I asked for information to be posted to the list because I believe, mistakenly or not, that we are a community. And because I believe that the people who post information to Avalon (or any other discussion list) become its heroes and heroines. Sure, it's extra work. But that's what makes it so appreciated. Finally, I'd also ask if folks have a problem with me that they write me privately so that we can try to work it out, and not take their dislike for me as an individual out on Avalon because I have now become list owner. Imagine my surprise in this Latino movie their playing of "By The (this?) River. " by Eno...! I'm not completely sure- didn't this come from "Before and After Science?" It was very cool, unexpected and an intriguing part of the film.. By the way- have I asked already? Is anyone from Avalon attending the Sylvian show in Atlanta? Take care- greggie/atlanta "now the ballroom's empty.." ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Apr 2002 08:27:39 +0100 From: Jane Fraser Subject: [AVALON] Bryan in Sunday Express Nice full-page pic and one page article/interview in today's Sunday Express Magazine.
