Never heard of the band or the album but very glad I bought it. This is the general rule for most mailing lists when you need to contact a human. Here's the general information for the list you've subscribed to, in case you don't already have it: [Last updated on: Sun Mar 31 17:46:53 2002] Welcome to AVALON - the international mailing list for Roxy Music fans. Please keep a copy of this information that you can look up when you need to. If you stay with us as part of AVALON you can experience so much. You'll be amongst the first to find out Roxy/Ferry news and release information. You'll find out about the rich history of the group and its members that goes back way years before they got together and continues many years after they disbanded. And you'll read the views and points of views of some of the most amazing people on this planet: the members of AVALON. It's not an exaggeration to say that AVALON has literally changed some people's lives over the last eight years. New friendships, love affairs, help with personal problems and more have all resulted from this mailing list which is really more of a community than a mailing list. But if you just want to sit in the background and read the mail as it comes in, then that's totally fine by us as well. The flipside of all this great stuff is simply AVALON has a long and tough set of rules that each subscriber has to abide by. During the eight years+ that AVALON has existed, we've learned that rules are essential to keep AVALON working effectively. Like all long-running mailing lists, we've had our share of prima donnas and problems-- subscribers who think they are more important than the list itself and think that they can dictate how the list should be run. We don't tolerate those people for very long on AVALON. So let's be up front so you know right now: if you don't agree to abide by these rules there isn't much point being here. People who don't conduct themselves in accordance with them are removed from the list: it's unfortunate but it's necessary. Actually, it's not unfortunate. You may have noticed that this is a long message. Get used to it. By the way, this list is a free service, but it is not a democracy. POSTING MESSAGES TO AVALON To post messages to AVALON the address is: avalon@smoe.org Now that you're a member of AVALON, it is a good idea to send in your biography to the list. That way existing members can get to know you and, in turn, you'll get to know who is joining the list and what they like, dislike etc. You may even find that some people write to you privately to welcome you to the list. We prefer that people do their welcoming in private e-mails rather than clogging up the list. Here is a suggested format for your biography. - -------------- Name: (you must post a real name to the list, not just a nickname) Nickname/preferred name: Age: Place/Country where you live: E-mail address: Home page: (if you've got one) Your likes: (e.g. your interests/hobbies etc.) First Roxy/Ferry experience: Favorite Roxy/Ferry song and why?: Least favorite Roxy/Ferry song and why?: The one unreleased track you wish Roxy/Ferry would release officially: The one track you wish Roxy/Ferry had never released!: Your history as a Roxy/Ferry fan: (for example you could include any or all of the following:-) * when you first became a Roxy/Ferry fan * if you've been to any Roxy/Ferry concerts * anything else that you personally consider to be an important in your personal history of being a Roxy/Ferry fan. (This is not a competition. It is simply meant to allow you to share a little bit of yourself with the rest of AVALON. And even if you haven't done any of the above, still tell us a little about how and why you became a fan.) What other music/groups/artists are special to you?: The things I most like about my present life are: The things I dislike the most about my present life are: - -------------- NEED HELP WITH AVALON? If you are going on vacation and don't want to come back to hundreds of messages, you can unsubscribe from AVALON. We are happy for you to subscribe and unsubscribe as you need to. There's a line that people aren't allowed to cross on AVALON. But it's set pretty far in front of us and only a few people have ever come close to crossing it. We encourage freedom of speech AS LONG AS people use common sense and maturity when posting to the list. But remember, freedom of speech is NOT one of your rights on this list: if you abuse the privilege, your subscription will be terminated immediately. If you want something else discussed on AVALON, start contributing your own stuff. Nothing gets AVALON moving on faster than an interesting topic. Not everyone on the list may agree with your views but at least you'll get to have your say. Have a sense of humor! AVALON is meant to be interesting AND fun. Sometimes things get a little twisted, people get into a huff and go and sit in the corner with their arms crossed--but it's only for a short time and then things settle down. And kids (and parents!)--if Avalon were a movie, it would probably be rated M: For a Mature Audience. It's not aimed at kids. So if you're a kid we accept no responsibility for what you might read on AVALON. WHAT IF I DON'T BELONG? This message is also about empowering you to make a decision as to whether AVALON is right for you. Some people say that AVALON should be for all Roxy/Ferry fans. Well, unfortunately that isn't always the case. Only you can decide if AVALON is something you want to be part of. After spending some time on AVALON you may feel as if you don't belong. You may not like the way the list operates, the rules, the stuff that people are saying on AVALON or any of a number of other reasons. We don't want you to be unhappy and feel as if you have to stay on AVALON. HOW MANY MESSAGES CAN I EXPECT TO RECEIVE FROM AVALON EACH DAY? The level of activity on AVALON varies tremendously. Some days you may be lucky to get 6 or 8 messages while other days you'll switch on your computer and have 30-40 messages from the list. It really ebbs and flows quite dramatically. And now ladies and gentlemen, here they are: THE RULES OF THE LIST! You need to know this stuff. Claiming ignorance of the rules won't stop you being removed from AVALON. Introduction: Be aware that your presence on the list is at the sole discretion of the list owner at all times. Most of these rules are based on simple netiquette, which has become a standard throughout most newsgroups and mailing lists around the world. 1. It is you responsibility to keep your e-mail account in good shape. If messages from AVALON start bouncing, you will be unsubscribed without warning. This can often happen when your mailbox is full. In fact, every week a number of people are taken off the list because of bouncing mail. Resubscribing after being taken off the list will be at the sole discretion of the list owner. You will know that you have been taken off the list if you do not receive any AVALON posts for 24 hours. 2. It is absolutely forbidden to send chain mail or spam messages to AVALON. This includes electronic cards, messages about viruses etc. If in doubt, check with the list owner (owner-avalon@smoe.org). 3. Commercial activity is not allowed on AVALON. 4. When you reply to a message from AVALON, you first need to decide whether the reply needs to go to the list or not. Many times, it is more appropriate to reply directly to the sender unless the information in your reply would be of interest to most people on the list. 5. We don't want to read reams and reams of text previously sent to the list so make sure that you delete all the unnecessary text from any email that you are responding to on AVALON. Only quote the one or two lines that you are specifically commenting on. 6. Don't you $#*&#% say that about him!!! Using the list to personally abuse other members is not allowed. If you disagree so strongly with someone that you feel compelled to say something--write to them directly (in a diplomatic tone), not to the list. 7. Binary attachments (photographs, documents etc.) may NOT be posted to the list. Write to the list and describe the photo you have. Ask people to e-mail you for a copy or place it on your web-site so that people can download it. 8. Combine your thoughts into one or two major posts--don't flood the list. We have had occasions where members have posted 6 or 7 messages to the list on the same day. This is not allowed. Sending more than one post per day is fine but think about your audience before you hit the send button. Is this something that other list members will find interesting/ amusing/entertaining/newsworthy/touching? If it's not, don't hit the send button at all. Use good judgement and common sense and you'll be fine. If you don't, we'll use ours instead. 9. Don't have personal conversations over AVALON--we're not interested! If you are chatting with someone on the list via e-mail, do it privately. 10. Make the subject header of your message relevant to your post. This is particularly important if you are replying to an ongoing thread but are including content that is substantially different to the original heading. 11. DON'T WRITE ENTIRE MESSAGES IN UPPERCASE--IT'S HARD TO READ AND CONSIDERED IMPOLITE! 12. Don't insult the list owner. I don't like it and won't tolerate it. Should you feel compelled to use the list to voice your personal opinions about how the list is being managed or should you choose to defame the list owner publicly, you will be removed from the list immediately. If you want to make constructive criticism, comments or just have a bitch about the administrator, the policies or rules of the list send it to me PRIVATELY at: owner-avalon@smoe.org. 13. Subversive Behavior. It's sad but some of our prima donnas and disgruntled ex-members actually try and get revenge on the list. They wreak whatever havoc they can. You're obviously thinking "why don't they get a life, it's only a list!" but it does happen. Naturally I reserve the right to ensure that people who engage/have engaged in behavior that is to the detriment of AVALON or the list owner, are excluded from current or future membership of the list. (I used to wonder why anyone would want to subvert a resource that helps so many Roxy/Ferry fans. But I've learned the hard way that jealousy, immaturity and personality disorders exist on the net just as they do in real life.) 14. And please remember, AVALON is NOT your personal soapbox to do with as you please. I don't care if you've got a PhD in music appreciation or if you only bought a "Best Of" yesterday--you need to respect these rules, the subscribers of AVALON, and the list itself. The moment you put yourself above the list is the time you will be directed to the exit. 15. AVALON is a PRIVATE email list. Subscriptions are at the sole discretion of the list owner who can remove you from the list at any time without explanation. All material posted to the list is the property of the list and the original authors and may not be quoted, used or copied to any other forum in any way whatsoever. If you wish to use something from the list, write to: owner-avalon@smoe.org. WHY SO MANY RULES? We've learned the hard way, by experience, that you need a comprehensive set of rules to ensure a mailing list with 500 people operates effectively. There's a stack of mailing lists out there where subscribers seem to spend most of their time bitching at each other or complaining about the list itself. We don't want AVALON to be like that. A FINAL THOUGHT...... Over the last eight years AVALON has become something very special. Something worth preserving. As list administrator I work very hard to make sure AVALON stays that way, for the 500 people already on the list and also for Roxy/Ferry fans who are yet to join. You can help us keep AVALON a great place to be! It was the first Roxy album that I had bought and owned "new" - the previous three had been either tape recordings of friends' albums, or second-hand copies. It remains my favourite Roxy album - perhaps partly for that reason. I still remember being completely bowled over by OOTB. The intro building quietly from nowhere, up to the drum roll and then straight into "All your cares...". And as a 16-year old with blue eyes, hearing my idol singing about "Pale blue eyes" convinced me it was my song. I was hooked immediately, but more was to come. Jobson's solo was simply stunning and I could not believe what I was hearing. I played the track over and over again, turning up the volume each time for that wonderful violin solo and I'm sure I drove my family completely mad. It remains a favourite track, still one I turn up loudly when driving. It has been wonderful to hear it again live on the last two tours, with the splendid Lucy Wilkins giving the song a new lease of life. I remember buying 'The Ultimate Collection' and thinking it was 'Help Me Make It Through The Night' and got a surprise when I got home and played it. I always felt the backing track was very mechanical sounding. The bass and drums have 'machine' writtten all over them. I wish I knew more of the history of making that track but I would guess it sounds as if Nile rodgers got Bryan in to add lyrics and a top line to his backing track and that's where Bryan's contribution began and ended. I think if Bryan was more involved in the song it wouldn't have sounded so rigid. Vocals with echo/delays only work in rare circumstances and I felt his voice sounded like a pub singer with his favourite Karaoke setting on his 'vocal effects' box. I feel overall that Bryan's input on 'Help Me' was not as much as the albums either side of it, Boys And Girls & Bete Noire where the use of drum machines, electro bass, digital delays etc is done with more subtlety. I first saw the video for Help Me last year on the Avalon Production videos. I really enjoyed the video and felt it's simplicity was its strength. Does anyone know any more on the history of how this song came about and how Bryan came to be involved in it? Quite agree - it's really mellow type music, but the lead singer of Cousteau (Liam McKahey) has a great voice. I've just read on the Cousteau message board that their main songwriter (Davey Ray Moor) apparently said in an interview that Siren was his favourite Roxy album, which would explain the choice of "Sirena" as title to their second album. Nice to know that Roxy still continue to influence bands who are up and coming. Aleks Yahoo! One of my earliest Roxy possessions was the 'Greatest Hits' album (ok it's naff but there ya go) and that's where I first heard this great song. It just blew me away. OOTB is a FANTASTIC song. The almost mediaeval intro slowly growing into something you just know is gonna be great. It's an exciting song and that excitement is prefaced well by that almost indiscernible start. AM is the top man for the job in these eerie situations. Then we launch into the lyrics with BF running up and down his octaves and quivering away like there's no tomorrow. The empathy, the ecstacy it's all there. And how many songs can mention ivory towers and be cool for goodness' sake? In the same way that Jane humours herself that the blue eyes refer to her (and who's to say they don't Janey-dear?), the ivory towers bit always appeals to me. And now for THAT solo. How can a violin be cool? Well this was one of the songs that made the violin in rock for me (and there wasn't a queue after it). It builds, it falls, and builds and falls, over and over until you barely know where you are in the song. LW's locks tossing themselves over the violin at gigs (partic ATGB gigs) said it all to me. This is a song to be immersed in.. Sorry I've just realised that this review is starting to paint images of Carmina Burana and Old Spice adverts of the early 1970s which is sort of appropriate but sort of horribly not. Let's put it this way, in my life I have sung along to one violin solo. This may say a lot about my strangeness but also a lot about how great the solo is. But was Lucy better than Eddie? That's the debate and I have to say I'm split - he had the inspiration and originality and she delivered it now and in a top way, so, honours even in my book. Live? It's fantastic for all the reasons above and really is a showstopper. Also, how many songs do you know have their own special handclaps? How does it fit with the rest of CL (one the finest you can guess the rest)? Well we all know this is Roxy's 'Berlin' album and it fits fine. TTOIA is a triumphant announcement of arrival and the lyrics enjoy a hedonism that thrills and damns all who abandon themselves to it. AIWIY has an almost 60s girl band feel to the lyrics and is a real feelgood song - it's coquettish and conquering at the same time. You can see Louise Brooks giggling her way through this. OOTB slinks in and ends with a flourish. It exits trailing a fur stole behind it, leaving devastation behind - it's the siren of the piece. And if you've stayed the course that long, then 'Casanova' and the cool ruler's sleaziness will finally deliver the coup de grbce to you. It's the unfortunate end for Pandora. You might be suffering from not heeding the Dionysian portents of TTOIA but it's too late.. you've been caught and captivated by CL which has moved onto its next victim. I actually thought that a good end to this album (I'm not a big fan of PR .... Hmmmmmm.) would have been the live version of 'Tara as performed by LW and AM last year. It has all the sadness of a finale and would be just perfect music to accompany a fatal drive out of 1930's Berlin Alexanderplatz with a young Fassbinder observing your fate as you disappear into a terrible darkness. *Sigh* Sorry about all of that but you know how this album affects me. A big thanks to Colleen for allowing me to indulge myself like this. Oh and I quite like OOTB too. I think others have spoken about the build up of the studio version on CL which captures one's interest, but it was really live where it did it for me ( except for the extreme disappointment of a Jobsonless and violinless ( ?) version on the Manifesto tour which I witnessed at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1979 ). Whether re-mixed or not the Viva! version IMHO ranks with Dream Home as the two best tracks on that album ( with ITIS close behind). On the tour last year , the violin solo was the highlight for me .OOTB is a song I have played for the last 27 years and it will make it into my then current playlist for 27 years more !! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V7 #116 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
