There's a little 'mini interview' in the mag too. Album Review as follows : - ---------------------------------------------------- It's always a relief when a major artist regains form ; Bob Dylan on Time Out Of Mind, Neil Young on Freedom. It is, therefore, superb to announce that Bryan Ferry joins this elite club with his eleventh solo Album, Frantic. Ferry has clearly been energised by three significant (not foolish) things : the enthusiastic reception given to his 30s covers Album, As Time Goes By ; the love that was shown for Roxy Music's brief reunion tour ; and, most importantly, the fact that he and his family narrowly escaped death when the plane he was travelling on was hijacked in 1999. Instead of further refining the template of 1982's Avalon until it almost entirely evaporated, or riding once again the war-horse of the cover-version-only album, Ferry not only finds his form on Frantic but actually redefines it. Recorded with sympathetic players such as Chris Spedding, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood and the remarkable Paul Thompson, Frantic actually feels like it was recorded in a non-stop two week session. It wasn't, of course. Some of the material here, notably his cover of Leadbelly's Goodnight Irene, have been around for the last eight years or so, but the majority of it was recorded in a quickish burst as Roxy's tour came to a close in the Summer of 2001. The opening A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall version of It's All Over Now, Baby Blue locates the Album immediately in full retro mode. Most astonishingly, Ferry has actually found 'that voice' again. The Dylan connection goes further with a sumptuous piano and vocal version of Don't Think Twice It's Alright, where Ferry is recorded so intimately, every breath is captured. And he whips out his harmonica. Cruel sees a bit of Tokyo Joe here, a slice of Country Life there, but this is something new - and to hear Ferry intone "James Bond, Jackie O, Johnnie Ray and Garbo", we are reminded that we're listening to the original chronicler of popular culture. Frantic's two major talking points, however, are San Simeon, which finds Ferry in full skull - beneath - the - skin - mode and I Thought. The former includes verses that were originally intended for 'In Every Dream Home A Heartache' and returns him to the art-rocking days of yore. The latter is the Album's finale and reunites Ferry with Eno. To hear Ferry singing one of Eno's sea shanties, with Eno on backing vocals, is a fitting end to an Album of this quality. The final couplets "listen and hold on, till the day fades out, smothered in gold" dissolving into Ferry's final harmonica solo, enable Frantic to close on a tremendously optimistic high. Remaining not quite in step with the times, but actually firmly ahead of them, Frantic displays Bryan Ferry in the best possible light. Jagger and McCartney, pay attention - THIS is how you grow old gracefully. (Review by Daryl Easlea). - -------------------------------------------------- I found the Dream Home / Simeon part particularly interesting - and here's the part of the interview concentrating on that point : - -------------------- RC : "San Simeon is an obvious link with your past. Is it true that some of the verses were left off In Every Dream Home A Heartache" ? Ferry : "I came across the Dream Home lyric, and verses I hadn't used - it would have been a hell of an epic if I'd sung them all ! So, I tailored them to San Simeon. I lost most of my lyrics around the time of Avalon in a suitcase that never turned up, when we were flying home from Nassau". - ----------------------- It's a reasonably short interview, placed beside the Album review. Those of you who went have re-lived it again and again, those who didn't can imagine. Im still waking up to Baby Blue in my head. Fabulous. Have been trying to contact Tracy from West Sussex whom I met in the queue - if you read this (and I'm sure you will), please get in touch, I must have your address wrong. Also, is 'Nigel' the Dr Who Nigel???!!! As for the 15 yr old daughter. My 2 daughters have been coming with me to Bryan/Roxy concerts since they were about 12 and are both fans, though they're a little older now............one of them has a 2 yr old son who visits me and asks to watch Bryan on TV - can't be bad. I also believe Nigel's baby was born to the sounds of As Time Goes By - so maybe shes the youngest....... I'm sorry to have missed the antics in the pub later, but had a long way to get home (no excuse really, but my husband drives me all around the country to watch concerts and I can't push my luck, there are a 'few' more later in the year!)
