First Gareth, cute little stammering Gareth who miraculously doesn't stammer anymore since he's achieved fame. If anyone wants to think about real, professional conspiracy theories this has a Max Clifford Premiership PR stunt ring to it. Bless him, there he was in his four-four-two spiky hair formation with a multi thousand pound contract for hair gel in his pocket, the equivalent of which, it took Mr F a whole Roxy world tour to earn. Oh Bryan, where were these media manipulators in the early years when you needed them? You had the hair dammit, you still have the "pop" hair to end all hair and still you've made no money out of it. How the world has changed. Now Gareth is "famous" for singing live, but he's new, he's young and he'll learn. A few bum notes in and he relaxed into his heart wrenching Unchained Melody. He gave it his all, but naively he didn't realise that technical hitches meant he had to give it his all 4 times over. His posse of Gareth prepubescents (who asked us earlier why Bryan Connelly the comedian, was appearing), swooned as he removed his jacket and asked them faultlessly if they'd like him to get completely changed right there. I came over all maternal and tut-tutted at the newly crowned Prince of Pop offering to show us his family jewels. Then I remember I was young once. And then I remembered that this was TOTPs and I had a sudden flash back to Virginia Plain and those teens dancing awkwardly around the gingham piano all those years back. I sniggered thinking that we might look just as daft trying to find the groove for Baby Blue and looking old enough to be the rest of the audience's grannies (ktwicked excluded of course). Anyway, check the gate and Gareth was done. And now for the man who's been doing it for 30 years as opposed to 30 minutes. On came the assorted backing band of the familiar and the not so familiar. TGPT, earlier spotted swaying, arms aloft with lit lighter singing along with Gareth (OK so I'm lying, but I bet he wanted to), Lucy whom I fear is still in a lot of pain from her ankle operation, Julia, and Colin Good who really has to work on his rock and roll look if he's to find easier access past the BBC security. Then Mick Green, Greaser Rock God of The Pirates who looked highly amused by the whole thing except for the techno track playing as they took to the stage. He subtly machine gunned the speakers with his Fender. Then some Polish Restauranteur and a character actor from Drop The Dead Donkey made up the ensemble. Can someone get the singer on stage now please? A very much leaner Ferry saunters over looking tanned, healthy, newly bequiffed and disturbingly younger than last year. As there was no permanent look of sustained surprise on his face we can rule out Botox. I was expecting the BBC suit - you know, small check (thanks to Eric Morecambe for that old chestnut), what we got was the most exquisitely cut slate grey suit you have ever seen, belted in as tightly as you would for take off. Bang, straight into Baby Blue, and bang straight out again. Bryan pulled the plug to start it up over again. This time it was plain sailing with the band miming along (and Mick Green forgetting his slide intro but hiding it like the true pro his is) and Ferry mugging it up. Unlike the Gareth crowd who were cued to raise the roof at their idol's high notes, we naturally whooped it up when Ferry hit the harmonica (look and learn Gareth fans, look and learn). A slight technical problem and it was another run through. Fluffer! I mean, make-up! And we're off again. Goddess of Love is next up, and just as I reported in the Frantic review, both tracks sounded better and more immediate live, loud and public than they did on first few hearings privately. The "maybe I'll find a way" passage segueing in my head into "maybe I'll start anew, try to find someone who, will love me like I love you" and the chorus of Goddess of Love becoming Hungry Like The Wolf. I blame the hallucinogenic effect of the BBC light rig. Then before you knew it they were gone. A curse on your professionalism Ferry. How dare you be slick enough to not have to repeat Goddess of Love, have you learnt nothing from the new generation of talent? The rest of the show was again a mixture of young and old. A crew of, I thought, pretty good British R&Bers (garage to you) who air bombed us with fake fivers from The Bank of Bling and sang that they didn't want to be broke. Us neither mate, but bloody Ferry will keep going on tour. And then Mick Green returned with the Pirates, the men who taught the Feelgoods all they know and who's singer ended up splattered all over a wall well over 30 years ago. They had a very bizarre effect on everyone. The Gareth prepubescents gyrated madly (and made Mick Green's day), Chris Turner died and went to Heaven, and Guy Lawley... well Guy went Billy bonkers and won a bunch of CDs for putting on such a show stopping performance. If that doesn't make it onto TOTP2 Guy I am withholding my licence fee. So there you have it punters. Young'uns beaten by the Oldun's. To vote for Gareth phone 0207 123 4567 To vote for Bryan phone John O'Brien or Chris Turner. Well into the life of a busy academic some serendipity must come... I had been booked for a couple of conferences in London for some time. I got a call on Sat. morning from a very kind (and sadly absent Diane Whateley) on Saturday morning asking if I had seen the list developments... Sadly chaps my devotion had waned and I had not been reading my mail given recent pressing work commitments. An extra day after my work in London had been added on for .... WEDNESDAY!!!!!!! Was this too lucky to be true? It was not. After an exhausting couple of days wrestling with knotty (sadly not naughty) legal stuff I was off and into TOTP studio heaven. I had to be wrestled away from bothering Bonnie Grier (critic and writer) in White City tube station - after all, you can't go bothering too many celebrities in one day. My bruv. Raymond had come down from Scotland overnight and we were positioned in the queue with sunglasses and zimmer frames strategically placed. I kept being astounded at how young Bryan Ferry fans were becoming these days. Just when the old adage about policemen looking young crept into my mind, I was reliably informed that they were in fact attending for "young" Gareth. At this point another Damascus like revelation was occurring to me which was that the queue ahead of me was developing a bulge in the middle. This was Avalonian mobbing going on and while I was about to remonstrate with Reecey and Jocelyn for getting above themselves, their good friend, a 6 foot 10 Stevesiren(?) loomed into view and I helpfully moved out of the way with apologies. There's no way to accessorise bruising from an angry crowd. You've seen the reviews from everyone on the performances and there's not a lot more I can say. Ferry was magic and I thought a much more relaxed performance than the TOTP2 show of last year. A special mention must go out to Lisa Snowdon (she will present the show) for her interesting approach to links recording. It made me marvel as to how technology makes everything look good on telly. However, there were two unsung heroes of yesterday - the male floor manager at the Beeb and "Viv". These two people earn their money. They remained unfailing pleasant and polite in Viv's case and hilarious in the case of the bloke. Having seen waht they do, I would end up slapping someone, telling people they liked crap music and saying "give me the mike and I'll bloody well get on with it". Did they do so? Did they coco and they deserve medals for it. I really think the bloke should get his own show on the telly. Now, I've noticed some wisecracks about towels in the mails. As the person who was lucky enough to purloin last year's Turin towel at the TOTP2 event, I was heartbroken. I was planning on getting the set: the bath towel, the hand towel, the face towel... I don't think I could have preserved the Kleenx makeup tissue as effectively (The make-up artist said she would have done her job for nothing yesterday - she had clearly dressed up for the day.) Anyway enough nonsense, ta ta and thanks to all the people who made this possible, particularly Diane and her trusty telephone! A Ferry good performance (sorry, been reading old NMEs again) and how dare he have a suit like that ! Cool. Funny how we all wished him to fluff a few lines, so we could have endless repeat performances of the songs. A special word for Lucy, who really did seem to be still in some discomfort. After BF disappeared, we were trapped for a while into doing TOTP links for another couple of acts, mentioned earlier. Patience was wearing thin, as most of us wanted to quit there and then, to retire to a local hostelry. An hour or so later, 17 of us did just that. True confession time here, all street-cred lost etc etc, but 2 weeks ago I was "dragged along" to the Pop Idol Live concert at Wembley Arena (by spooky coincidence found myself in the self-same seat that I had for Roxy on 23 June last year), and I must admit the whole thing was great entertainment. Cheesy and corny yes, but the kids could sing and thoroughly enjoyed themselves (as did the audience). And it certainly gave me something to talk about to the "younger" members of the audience when I was queuing up with them yesterday, once I had explained to them who Bryan Ferry was. It really only struck me today - Bryan is nearly 40 years older than young Gareth! And another thought... I think all who were there yesterday agreed that Bryan is looking amazingly good. Its amazing that during the selection process they can rubbish a guy because he's fat and say he's no way going to "make it" and still people throw thier support behind this program is just crab. Even the young followers at TOTPs hadn't a clue who BF was !!!I mean that just shows whats going wrong in the music industry I was born in 64 but i still knew and respected music from all generations based on their music not what some slick salesmen told me The more the world go's down this route of commercial rubbish the harder it will be for any real artist to make it You could really see RM on pop idols being successful "I'm sorry but the guy with the floppy hair and wobbly voice really needs to sing something more simple I mean who is Virgina Plain ? Cant he cover Summer Loving? And who do they think they are writing their own stuff. i am sorry but the only way your see Gareth on a TOTP stage in 30years is with a sweeping brush. Who ends up with multiple copies of some CDs (bonus tracks or no bonus tracks)? I'll probably get the UK import (I'm too impatient) plus I have the Japanese one on order (I don't think I can cancel my order). Heck, maybe I'll buy the American version too.
