The Herr mentioned that Bryan was very polite, but slow in answering the questions - and reminded him of the elderly man from the "After Eight" advert in tv ! I am proud to announce yet another stalk of the Wilder Weekend weed. This is a great sounding FM broadcast, with amazing separation on the instruments. Some great performances too. So, here's the deal: as always, I need three people with burners and three intelligent souls who were too smart to buy one of the cursed things in the first place. The people with burners must be willing to copy and post, free of charge, six copies (three to burners and three to the burnerless), as I am doing. First three applicants in each category only, PLEASE DO NOT post your request to the group (or I might not see it, as I don't always get everything the list sends out). I don't mean to be rude, but if you're smart enough to type you're smart enough to figure this bit out. So... I'm waiting. cheers, David Check out my website- Shakatak, 80's Atlanta bands, Chandler, Hamlet, 80's new wave, cool stuff! http://www.America.net/~davdmock ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 18:22:06 -0800 From: "Jason Kwon" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Terry's burner > In case you haven't made up your mind yet,my best > friend just bought a Yamaha CRW 3200E/VK burner(125 > pounds from KOTECH ltd),he is very pleased with > it.Maybe you can burn me something, thank you, thank you...JL. My two cents worth on CD burners: when buying a burner, make sure you buy one with effective buffer-underrun protection. For those unfamiliar with the term: when your computer can't feed data fast enough to your CD burner (happens often with slower computers, or if you're running other tasks on the computer simultaneously with a burning session), your burner will write zeroes to your disc, effectively ruining your disc (the burner's data buffer has emptied due to the computer's inability to maintain a sufficient rate of data transfer to the burner and so the burner has nothing to write to disc). Most higher speed CD burners offer some sort of safeguard for this condition, but in my opinion, some implementations work better than others. I think the original "Burnproof" technology was developed by Sanyo, and burners which make use of "Burnproof" can actually suspend the writing laser when the buffer is emptied, and resume burning at the point the write was suspended once the buffer receives sufficient data. I believe Plextor burners (long considered some of the best burners, but also pricey) license the Sanyo "Burnproof" technology. Lite-On has in the past used Sanyo's technology, but lately I believe they have implemented their own technology which offers the same protection. Many CD burner manufacturers actually are repackaged Lite-On drives, and they seem to be well-reviewed. Ricoh has their "Justlink" technology as well. I'm not sure about the latest burners from Yamaha, but some of the older ones advertised "Waste-proof" buffer-underrun protection. My understanding was that it was not as robust as other implementations. The theory behind "Waste-proof" was to put a relatively large buffer on the drive (8MB) and have the drive carefully monitor and adjust writing speeds to minimize the chance of emptying the buffer, but the technology offered no real protection should the buffer actually empty. The 3200E drive JL mentions above lists "Safeburn" among its features, not "Waste-proof," and from the descriptions I read concerning "Safeburn," it sounds similar to Sanyo's "Burnproof," with the addition of the larger drive buffer and speed control, so it does sound like a good bet if you're looking for a burner. Buy a good burner with effective buffer-underrun protection and you'll reduce the number of bad discs you burn (barring operator error) to zero.
