Miles, Thanks for your most reassuring and kind response. We do need to put the issues on the table for everyone's consideration. We can work it out. Let's hope Bryan will grace us with some "Frantic" stops in the USA this summer. If we could just get Chastain to be a more pleasant experience. Although I could have pre-ordered it somewhere else for cheaper, I figured that I would just order it from them. I have met and corresponded with many wonderful people on this list, from all over the world. But the degree of incivility that sometimes permeates this list I find to be very disturbing, to say the least. When I read some of the mean-spirited diatribes here, I wonder if some us would actually interract this way with people in our own social/professional circles. Call me a wimp, but I don't post here a whole lot because I don't like getting pummelled for making provactive statements, instead of someone taking a contrary position and then defending it through logical reasoning. I wonder if the issue may be one of format. I have to say that while I really like this site, I prefer those of TGPT and Manzanera. First of all, I believe the presence of Paul on his site, and Bill Mac on Manzo's, lends a sometimes verbalized but mostly unspoken presence that reminds us that it's our duty to be civil. The format is also such that you can follow a conversation all the way through and respond in kind. You get some great discussions without the low blows, personal insults, and bracketed response that we sometimes get here. By the way, I would encourage all of you to check out both Paul and Phil's sites if you haven't done so already (though they're both down at the moment). There's interesting, intelligent, and lively discussion, without (for the most part) personal attacks. Certainly, there is a fear broaching this topic, who can possibly top Simon Puxley's fantastic explanation, available here: http://www.avalongroup.freeuk.com/articles/strand.html Moreover, perhaps because we have heard the song so often,it is easy to overlook what an amazing song it is.We get bored ,we've heard it before.Indeed, since the song was released, has there been a RM/BF concert where this song was NOT played? It's been a signature song for YIKES..29 years now. But sit back, and try to listen to the song as though it were for the first time.We hear the voice, and the "tribal beat" kicks in.And then that wailing, screeching sax, destined to make the parents of 1973 yell at their teenage child--What is THAT? Turn that DOWN! But we can still dance to the song, whatever the volume.I always imagined dancing like Snoopy, maybe because the dog from the Peanuts comic strip had such a joyous dance style. And then there are the lyrics,as wildly gyrating as the music-,Eskimos and Chinese,Nijinsky, the Sphinx and Mona Lisa,Lolita and Guernica. It's a social-art-history lesson in 4 minutes. And about the only thing dated in the song is the reference to "teenage revolution"-and doesn't that make YOU feel old? It's still a great song...and I still look forward to seeing Bryan sing it again, acting out the lyrics as he always has done, flexing his arm and singing of "Strand power". Alan..who is feeling very old this week..I went to a Nelly Furtado concert;she is a wonderful performer, and her album, despite it's wincingly bad title(Whoa,Nelly!), is quite good. But I looked around and realized,I have been going to nightclubs longer than most of the people around me have been alive! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Mar 2002 08:35:10 +0000 From: "Tracy Connell" Subject: [AVALON] Record Fair (UK) Hi all, Just to let you know that there is a Record Fair on on Saturday 9 March at the University of Northumbria in Newcastle upon Tyne, starting at 10 am if anyone is interested.
