It's time for me to begin rambling incoherently about film titles. Something of this sort happens just once every year or two; Ages ago I started compiling a list of Ferry connected films for my own amusement and would you believe it every bloomin' time I started my boss expected me to do the work I'm paid for - how unreasonable is that. Needless to say, I never really got off the blocks. Anyway, the thread began in the same vein as yours Bahi. Prompted by the Frantic Polanski connection, Day For Night popped into my head . Hmm, Truffaut. Is there a pattern emerging. No Strange Delight, wasn't that a Dietrich Film which leads to Falling in love again. Dietrich leads to Von Stronheim, didn't someone post something mentioning him as a kick off point the other day (apologies but it all got lost somewhere in this mind-numbingly boring techno babble) As The world Turns, This Island Earth (aka war of the Planets). Then of course there's the obvious links to Casablanca, Brief Encounter, Elvis movies (Are you lonesome tonight, Baby I don't Care from Kid Creole) What A wonderful World (Life?) - pushing it a bit. Then the cast list. Monroe, Garbo, Jimmy Dean, Tonto, (sorry got carried away with the Cruel alliteration) And now, of course, the newly released connections to Hiroshima Mon Amour, Alphaville and Citizen Kane, oh and there's Gone With the Wind - the house was called Tara. You can dig up the movie references ad infinitum. As for European cinema vs Hollywood Silver Screen, I think it pans out fairly equally. What's always amused me is that Ferry constantly refers to his love of Americana in interview, that he wore mohair suits like Otis, drove (or more likely just parked) a clapped out old Studebaker as a student, was obsessed with the Warhol crowd etc etc, but a more European man you'd be hard pressed to encounter. He would make the lead in any Visconti film (and quite probably one or two of Fellini's!), he wears the mantle of world weary angst with aplomb. Ennui is his middle name (it's in his passport). Basically, he's a miserable old bugger- so that makes him filmically European! But I think he picks the names of these films not because he's seen them necessarily and is influenced by them or their plots, but because he likes the way the words sound or look on a page. Let's go back to Polanski again - wouldn't Repulsion be a great title for a Ferry toon (and an even better video) and a great starting point for a lyric that might bear no resemblance to the film? The lyrics of San Simeon don't take me to the Hearst hedonism of Xanadu, but they do make me think of another film. Eyes Wide Shut. Or even better still, Scandal (featuring the Profumo/Christine Keeler parties). I really must get out more. But maybe not to the pictures. Agreed. And also - I'm being cynical - because they represent something that's safe to use. Almost as if the use of an existing title or phrase deflects criticism: the phrase already has a cultural stamp of approval. It's the technique of an insecure writer, perhaps. But they do sound good, and he does choose very well. I guess that Ferry gets the same criticism for his choice of musicians, getting badly knocked in '85 for spending a fortune on a glittering list of stars for Boys and Girls, in search of the perfect rock album. But he does coax some fantastic performances from people on that album. I would never have believed that it was possible for Knopfler to sound as strung out as he does on Valentine when the rush is on. It's a *magical* bit of playing. Boys and Girls is, on one level, a great guitar album. (When it's played loudly enough for all those layered staccato guitars to come through.) Which reminds me: River of No Return. (But you've mentioned Marilyn already.) ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Mar 2002 19:01:49 +0000 From: Bahi Subject: RE: [AVALON] It's still the same old movie >TWhat's always amused me is that Ferry constantly refers to his love of >Americana in interview [...] but a more European man you'd be hard pressed >to encounter. I just have a feeling that after so many shows since the launch of ATGB back in late '99 that things will be on a much smaller scale this time round with most of the shows in the UK and Europe being open air similar to the summer 2000 set up. It would be a shame for the North Amaerican fans to miss out on what I think will prove to be a very interesting tour. However if I'm right that there may well be a fairly quick follow up to "Frantic" the US may get gigs then with a view to promote both albums. These are just my personal thoughts and in no way related to anything that has been said officially or semi-officially. All the best, Tom. Also, the Roxy tour got a fair amount of publicity, so I've not given up, though there are forces at work I don't follow (the single, apparent delayed US release, etc.) I do know this: The more buzz there is, the liklier it is that it will turn up here in a timely fashion. So it never hurts to start harassing your local CD retailers and radio. A bit early for that, but soon. I find that disappointing, somehow. I think I read ages ago that Ferry did indeed drive (still drives?) a Merc. A friend of mine who lives down the road from him has told me before that he's spotted Bryan using some sort of "large 4-wheel drive" type "landcruiser/range rover" vehicle whilst visiting the local shops.
