My earliest memories were of my Dad coming home with those familiar brown cardboard flat packs under his arm. And then, there they were, in their full vinyl glory. Tamla Motown advance promo copies. Beatles white labels. You name it. Every latest release, months before they were released. But that was because my square old Dad was the reality behind the "swinging" Fiske's Discs column that ran in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle from the 60's to the early 80's, and still (I discovered not long ago) fondly remembered by both Bryan and TGPT. So imagine my childlike excitement when the Frantic promo finally plopped onto my welcome mat. I guess I would be doing my heritage a disservice if I failed to share it with you. Switch off here those who wish to venture no further. Well, just between the two of us, I planned to wonder out loud at the discordant, strained Harleyesque/Zimmerman vocals of Baby Blue, was going to ponder at the parallels between the venom spitted Alphaville Cruel vs the smoothed over Cherokee Frantic Cruel as the modern day schizophrenic Casanova. I was going to suggest that the most comfortable tunes, the ones that sounded so familiar on first hearing, were strangely the ones featuring TGPT. Was that the subconscious Roxy groove in my head? (There's something about Goddess of Love that took me to Just Another High). I was going to suggest that the breakneck Vic Reeves speeded up San Simeon might have benefited from a slower more intense tempo, although I love the disembodied haunted voices (tell me what they're thinking now). And I was going to herald the jaunty Eno pop-along as a masterpiece of simplistic beauty, fawn over Fool For Love and Nobody Loves Me and throw up at the very thought of One way Love (and I just know it has Hit Single to the Dance Away Masses written all over it). Frantic, a real Bride Stripped Bare mishmash. This of course was to be delivered in true knee jerk, gut feeling Fiske fashion - you know, play it once and decree, no, it's not raw enough, the production's knackered some of the best tracks etc etc and forever refuse to accept otherwise. But then, last night, I heard it in public. What? You heard. Frantic, in it's entirety, playing over the PA in an Italian restaurant in Old Compton Street. And it sounded bloody brilliant. Baby Blue (which I had already written off as a bad job) had "blinding" written all over it. Cruel nearly knocked me off my chair, and the whole place joined in Goodnight Irene (well we did, and it was getting pretty late). People were asking the waiters "who's this?" and we were asking "how the hell are you playing this?" Turns out the owner got matey with Roxy way back in '71 when they were regulars at his Alonso Restaurant in Clapham. Everyone has connections eh? But it made me think that this is an album for public consumption as opposed to private digestion. The production is spot on for big spaces. It sounds like great fun out and about, whereas it sounded a little jaded on my Dancette. And then I thought -what is this lot going to sound like live? Guess we'll all know soon enough. Hope I haven't spoiled anyone's anticipation but maybe whetted one or two appetites. Elbows off the table and prepare for a mixed feast. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2002 12:07:28 -0500 From: David Subject: [AVALON] Re: Tonight Matthew im gonna have to be...........................? Naturally, you ask a question, answer it with the simple answer -- the files are large -- then you ignore your own correct answer and toss in a few looney suppositions and close out your ramblings with another insult. For you information, I am the unpaid host for a really impressive fan support website -- not one with a small, but vocal claque of ethereal intellectual goddesses like yourself -- for which I am donating some resources. It was worth the import price to open the booklet of Pulp's We Love Life and see that photo on the page opposite the lyrics to "Bad Cover Version." Also, the gig was sold out within hours of the tickets going on sale, I think. The crowd was very enthusiastic -- and, I might add, although there weren't many walkers or wheelchairs in evidence, the crowd was definitely not in the same age bracket as some who might have found last night's awards show entertaining in the slightest (aside from Dylan, I guess). I think your young woman was something of an aberration. If a person never offers one single note for trade on this list, that in no way diminishes their value to this list. Some people make music available, some people make information available, some make us think, some make us laugh, some delight us with their writing, and some infuriate us with their opinions. *All* of these things are incredibly valuable to the list and if someone doesn't do whatever it is that we do, that doesn't mean their contribution is any less important. I will also say that one thing which has consistently raised eyebrows on Avalon in the past is the "I have X which is extremely rare and you can only get it if you have Y" attitude. For many of us it goes against every reason why we joined a mailing list. Plus, it's not very gracious and I daresay it's the kind of behavior the Sisters tried to cure at least me of way back when. Human nature being what it is I know that this behavior will continue. Alas. However, I am happy to announce that, if all goes well, in a few days a list member will post to let us know the detail re: the Concord show being made widely available. My thanks to this person and the effort to diffuse this situation somewhat since this is pretty much the tour's Holy Grail show and people understandably want it.
