["Guy Lawley" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Whatever Gets You Thru the Night David Bowie recorded Mother for this tribute. It was scheduled for 1998, but was then rescheduled to coincide with Lennon's 60th birthday in 2000. Then... nothing! This is a story from Rolling Stone in 1998 relating to the album: Delayed Karma Anticipated John Lennon tribute album to include Bowie, Sinead and Everclear The good folks at Capitol Records and Yoko Ono are letting a John Lennon tribute album age like a fine bottle of Bordeaux. Though no one will say why it's taken four years for the powers that be to get off their collective arses to put out the yet-untitled disc, speculation abounds that weak sales of Hollywood Record's Working Class Hero: A Tribute to John Lennon, released nearly three years ago without Ono's blessing, gave Capitol pause. Then again, it may just be Capitol wasn't jumping for joy over the artists who expressed interest in the project (mailing in schlocky Lennon cover tunes) and it's taken this long to get an album's worth of releasable material. And it just may take a little longer. In fact, for every year the album's been in production, there's an equal number of artists almost cinched to appear on the tribute. Thus far, only David Bowie ("Mother"), Sinead O'Connor ("Mind Games"), Paula Cole ("Working Class Hero") and Everclear ("Instant Karma") have passed muster with a hodgepodge of other artists still in negotiations to hop on board. One manager had all but forgotten his artist recorded a song for the album and asked when or if it was ever going to come out. Right now, bet your band's next residual check on next spring. Ben Folds Five are considering taking on "God," "Hold On" or two other tunes for the album; Elliott Smith may contribute "Jealous Guy," a song he often performs in concert; Robbie Robertson is eyeing "Watching the Wheels;" and Steve Winwood may lay claim to the coup de grace "Imagine." According to a source close to the project, Capitol is also courting Bruce Springsteen and the three remaining members of the Beatles -- Paul, George and Ringo -- to pay homage to Lennon. Other artists in consideration for the project include Peter Gabriel, Ani DiFranco and Los Lobos. Proceeds from the album will be donated to the AIDS/HIV-related charity AmFAR. BLAIR R. I read that it was recorded around 1993 and if I remember right Paul Thompson & John Wetton were on the recording. This was a project organised by Yoko Ono as a tribute to John Lennon but it has never been released. There were several artists involved in the proposed album. We've had a little bit of a winter of discontent re finding just the right venue for AMA2, in Paris, scheduled for April. Well, we found the right one (after searching through over 30 Venues) but they have let us down on a couple of major points, and time is getting far too close now. Therefore, we have decided to play safe, and delay AMA2 in Paris, with our new provisional date being the weekend of September 28th. Add to this, now that news is gradually filtering through regarding Mr Ferry's forthcoming release and prospective promotional support we have decided to err on the side of caution. Oh yes, it WILL happen. But all details of the Venue, regarding size, location, stage etc - have to be just right, as I'm sure you appreciate. It will be 'Autumn in Paris'. This will ensure that the big event doesn't clash with any leg of the Ferry tour, unless of course he's on Duracell batteries again and then there'll be no stopping him. It will also mean that our American cousins will be able to travel trans Atlantic at an off peak price. Many of the fabulous raffle prizes have already been wrapped, and are still being added to as each day passes (close to 50 already, I'll have you know !). Who knows what extras we'll have to offer after a Summer of touring. Maybe the big pants will make it in as the top prize after all. So, start putting a few pence/cents/euros away each week in your piggy banks and before you know it AMA2 in Paris will have paid for itself. We will of course bring you more information as we go along this particular boulevard. Apologies, but it really is necessary to delay, as we want all arrangements for the party to be 'just so', as we're fussy little beggars, and want it to be bigger, better, and brasher than the first one. More news as we have it, and we'll let you know when the 'AMA2' Website goes up, which will carry all the details of the event, and more. Reecey... Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! From eden.vmg.co.uk eden is proud to announce the release of Frantic, the highly anticipated new studio album from rock and pop legend Bryan Ferry. Frantic draws together 13 songs; principally brand new material and a selection of inventive cover versions. Frantic presents Ferry at his most versatile and is guaranteed to thrill fans of all eras of an illustrious career which continues to musically and stylistically influence music today. The album features several classic Ferry-esque love songs, enhanced by the inimitably luxurious production of Avalon and As Times Goes By producer Rhett Davies. Nowhere is this more perfectly captured than in the sweeping emotional drive of Nobody Loves Me, and the lilting Cruel and Marilyn Monroe-inspired Goddess of Love both co-written with Dave Stewart. Yet, evolving and surprising as always, we also find a wholly new Bryan Ferry who has brought seductive elements of bluesy rock and country swing into his repertoire. It comes as no surprise therefore that Frantic includes versions of two Bob Dylan tracks Dont Think Twice and Its All Over Now Baby Blue which kicks off the album and reveals Ferrys superb harmonica skills. The Don Nix blues standard Goin Down continues the trend, whilst Leadbellys classic Goodnight Irene takes on a good ole drinking song quality accompanied by traditional Cajun musicians. Further down the historical path is a beautiful interpretation of the medieval Ja Hun Hons Pris which leads into A Fool For Love, the former originally written by Richard The Lionheart. Co-producer Colin Good provides the Virginal keyboard parts whilst the soprano voice is that of Mary Nelson, also adding shimmer to the haunting San Simeon. Also highly notable is Hiroshima - a song inspired by the film Hiroshima Mon Amour which features Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood. Other musicians contributing to Frantic include Lucy Wilkins on violin and Sarah Brown on backing vocals, both of whom memorably performed on the hugely successful Roxy Music reunion world tour last year. The tour also brought Roxy Music drummer Paul Thompson and Ferry back into the studio together for the first time in twenty years, on Fool For Love and San Simeon and Goddess of Love, and guitar parts on Frantic are provided by Chris Spedding who also played with Ferry in the 70s. Perhaps it is then entirely fitting that the album closes with I Thought the fascinating writing collaboration of Ferry with Brian Eno who supplies backing vocals and keyboards. The title Frantic belies the time put into the making of this album, Ferrys first new song-writing album since 94. However he has notched up three Top 20 albums and two extensive tours in just the last two years. Frantic firmly re-establishes Bryan Ferry as one of the most thrilling and distinctive performers of our time. The combination of his famous on stage charisma and this portfolio of new material makes his tour in June an exciting prospect. Tracklisting: Its All Over Now Baby Blue, Cruel, Goin Down, Goddess of Love, Dont Think Twice, Nobody Loves Me, Ja Hun Hons Pris, Fool For Love, Goodnight Irene, Hiroshima, San Simeon, One Way Love, I Thought Frantic is released in the UK on 15 April. *** Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo!
