Strange experience yesterday; I kept hearing this song on the radio that I really liked, but for whatever reason everytime I heard it, no title was given, kept thinking if I knew what it was called I would buy it. Then yesterday I hear my daughter playing 'the' track briefly then turns it off. I rush into her room, it was the radio, I turn it on again "...that was 'Elize?' a re-entry in this weeks chart at 23". Later in local record shop "I'd like to buy 'Elize?' please, don't know who it's by, but it's in the charts around 20ish". "Sorry it's not been released yet",came the reply "What you must have heard was the 'pre-release chart'".This was followed by long technical explanation about the current record company chart policy etc... I was going to ask "How can a record re-enter a pre-release chart" but thought better of it. So I changed tack "Ok then, is it possible to pre-order the new Bryan Ferry single 'Baby Blue' released March 18th? or if not, maybe I can order a pre-release copy?"...... "Bryan Ferry?.... No, nothing on the computer...are you sure?..anything else I can help you with?".."Well actually there is a couple of recently released DVDs and the Sun Records tribute album ...." ,"'The High Road'?.. we've got a video listed here from a Scottish soap?".....Reecey,do you do mail order? Is it French ? Could it be 'Alizee' ? Let me know offlist, as I have that, picked it up in France a while back. Must admit, the UK 'scene' is very often behind everyone else in recent years, things do tend to be released here last of all. I'm sure it never used to be like that. Reecey... Perhaps mime-format attachments are blocked, but uuencoded ones pass unhindered?" Good question, Jason. Wish I knew the answer, for techie I am not. What little understanding I have on this subject is exposed below. As you probably know, uuencode is a program that encodes binary files into plain ASCII text for transmission over mediums that do not support other than simple ASCII data, so the file can be sent AS email or POSTED to newsgroups. To transfer a binary file as a mail message it must be convert to ASCII first. (Most mail programs will do this for you when you ATTACH a binary file to a mail message.) Uuencode reads the file (or by default the standard input) and writes an encoded version to the standard output. The encoding uses only printing ASCII characters and includes the mode of the file and the operand name for use by uude_code. By default the standard UU encoding format is used. An encoded file can be sent by mail to a user on another host. They can then save the file and restore the original binary file using the uudecode command. Uudecode transforms uuencoded files (or by default, the standard input) into the original form - decodes the file window.uu and recreates the file window.xwd. The encoded file is not removed. What I derive from the above is: 1) A uuencoded binary file is intentionally sent as the email message, rather than as an attachment to email. Why send a uuencode file to smoe.org? We all know smoe.org strips away attachments - someone really wanted us to 'read' the post! 2) The recipient of the uuencode must have the ability to decode (uudecode) the encoded message to restore its binary form - thus what appeared as a text file is restored to its true nature of graphics or execution commands. Since uuencoding and uudecoding are both non-passive activities, a recipient may receive a uuencoded file and not act upon it thereby leaving the file in its impotent ASCII state. UNIX systems/shells may or may not automatically uudecode. The uuencoded file may be further transmitted to other parties without uudecoding the uuencoded. The binary form is restored only when an operating system is 'told' by its user to do so! It appears that smoe.org may have been used as a conduit for this party picture backdoor trojan worm, we can see the uuencode in its ASCII form as documented in the Avalon archives. Smoe.org did not uudecode. Again, the ASCII form of a uuencoded binary file is enfeeble. I do not understand how the digest was capable of sending you a "copy of the myparty virus (the file www.myparty.yahoo.com was attached,...)" in binary form or as an attachment! Perhaps I misunderstood you. All I am able to recount is : A total of five "new photos from my party!" posts appear in the archives - four from timtuck@home.com and one from alegna@cybcon.com (Angela Prue). The first two sent by timtuck on Monday 28 Jan 19:15:31-0800 (same time) were both striped "demine removed a uuencoded section named www.myparty.yahoo.com which was 661 lines." The subject line was "[Avalon] new photos from my party!" - note the [Avalon]. The next two posts from timtuck - Mon 28 Jan 19:47:05-0800 (32 minutes after the first two posts) and 19:47:49-0800 (another 45 second delay) did not have the uuencoded section striped away - these two posts bear the subject "new photos from my party!" - note the absence of "[Avalon]". The fifth post came as you noted on Tue 29 Jan 06:45:53-0800(PST) from angela prue with subject line, "new photos from my party!". The only differences I see, based upon the information available through the archive, is the inclusion of "[Avalon]" in the subject of the two posts that had been striped of a uuencoded section. Also, the subliminal footer does not appear on the three posts with uuencoded files. I do not know what, if any, implications might be surmised from that - perhaps smoe.org (Jason and Jill) might clue us in. I'm certain timtuck could be of help with questions about the origin, the presence of the uuencoding, and the various timing of the posts that were sent to Avalon List from his email. Tim? An Aside: This morning I queried 100 discussion groups about the intrusion of uuencode presented to their mailing lists on Jan 28 and 29 (the same dates Avalon List experienced uuencode sent to smoe.org) and found only ONE site - that's one percent - had an incident!!! Best wishes.
