Staffers in the L.A. office will be notified of the changes Friday morning in a meeting at which time it could be announced that producer Matt Serletic (Matchbox Twenty) is taking the helm at Virgin. Reports also circulated this week that Serletic is in late-stage talks to take over the label either on his own or with help from an as-yet-unnamed co-president. The move would mean both of EMI's flagship U.S. labels are run by executives from the creative side of the biz: producer and manager Andy Slater took the reins at Capitol Records a year ago, with a mandate to revitalize the label's venerable but slightly stodgy roster with fresh talent. Levy, a veteran executive widely credited with revitalizing Polygram's sprawling music division in the mid-'90s, is expected to perform a similar feat for the troubled EMI, which has suffered over the past two years from two failed merger attempts, slumping sales and thinning market share. Along with longtime No. 2 man David Munns, Levy has embarked on a top-to-bottom review of EMI's businesses, aiming to slash overhead and boost the bottom line. The two execs made their presence felt in the executive suite earlier this month, removing longtime Virgin U.K. president Paul Conroy -- a protege of Levy predecessor Ken Berry -- and handing his duties over to EMI U.K. & Ireland chief Tony Wadsworth. But by far the most dramatic result of their efforts was the termination of Carey's $80 million deal last Thursday -- a move industry watchers heralded as the beginning of the end of the mega-dollar superstar signing. Carey was allowed to keep her signing bonus of $21 million and paid an additional $28 million to tear up the contract the two parties signed eight months ago. Cooper and Newton were not as closely associated with the ill-fated Carey signing as were Berry and his former wife, ousted Virgin vice chair Nancy Berry. Still, sources said the pair had fallen victim to concerns from the top that Virgin's U.S. operations have stagnated in recent years. The pair were close allies of ex-EMI topper Berry, who moved them from Virgin U.K. five years ago to run the U.S. label. At the time, they were riding high as co-managing directors in the U.K. (under Conroy) after breaking wildly successful pop act the Spice Girls (news - web sites). Prior to signing on with Virgin U.K. in 1992, Cooper and Newton also worked together at Island Records, building the career of that label's flagship act, U2, in the 1980s. ========== Let's hope the new people can actually break a new act in the US. And sell a few Bryan Ferry records. - --Grant _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2002 13:20:25 -0000 From: S.J.Batie@open.ac.uk Subject: [AVALON] jenas guy a headline on one of the north east of england sports pages today: "bobby: I'm just a jenas guy" as newcastle united football club's manager bobby robson announces the signing of nottingham starlet jermaine jenas. groan ..... steve ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2002 13:24:22 +0000 From: "Tracy Connell" Subject: [AVALON] Glasgow 29 Sept boot Hi I didn't know there was a boot of Glasgow 29 available. Interesting reading, if you are a BowieNet member there are some great pics with the journal. SimonG Journal for Wednesday, January 30th 2002 Past-Blaster While looking for white socks the other day, I came across these rather lovely pics of Freddie Burretti and Daniella, the fashion duo from London who I met in the late sixties. Freddie, of course, went on to be the ultimate co-shaper of the Ziggy look. Daniella, by the way, was the first girl I had seen with dyed white hair and cartoon images cut and dyed into the back (my favourite was her 'ice-cream cone' in three colours.) Blessed with absolute style, she unwittingly changed so much of how female Britain looked after my then wife copped her sense of style one hundred percent and her haircut and slipped into a bunch of my photo sessions for the daily rags of the time, dressed basically as Daniella. (Daniella as role model was dropped for Cyrinda Fox about a year later, sadly uncredited as such.) All Daniella's clothes were designed and made by Freddie, and she would wear them with such flair and simplicity that never once did she look like she was 'trying to impress' though some of the outfits were outrageous for the times. A major Freddie fan was Anthony Price, (who was working for Stirling Cooper Jeans at the time, 1968) later designer for Roxy Music. He still holds a torch for him today. Whenever I see Anthony he always asks, 'Whatever happened to that Freddie Burretti, where is he?'. Well Anthony, the last thing Fred told me was that he was off to Italy to try and join the Valentino studio. Or maybe France, Since then? Daniella's dye-job convinced me of the importance of a synthetic hair colour for Ziggy. This turned into reality when I spied the Kansai Yamamoto model on a fashion magazine cover (it was a slightly 'girlie' job like Honey, definitely not Vogue, I'll dig it out one day, I know I still have it somewhere). In 1972, I duplicated not only the colour from this cover but the cut as well. A complete lift - all in one go. I've read in different accounts that the Ziggy cut came from a number of different sources, or was designed by a local hairdresser in Bromley or Beckenham. Absolute tosh! I couldn't afford the clothes but I did have the boots made, by a bloke in Penge. (Happily, I met his son who is now working as a concierge, a couple of years ago over in London.) A Reluctantly Written Postscript Strangely, and so very sadly, as I write this piece, Mark Adams emails me the tragic news that Freddie has died. I am so sad at this particular passing, as he was genuinely one of the nicest and most talented spirits that I have had the honour of working with. Freddie and I changed our world, small as it was, to what we thought it could be. He lives on, for me, through his creative genius. Here is the message his family passed on to me. They have only just made this news available. They were happy for me, in turn, to pass it on to you guys. 'Frederick Burrett (also known as Freddie Burretti) died on May 11th 2001 in Paris. He passed away peacefully in his sleep aged 49. He had lived and worked in Paris since 1991. He is sadly missed by all of his family and friends.' I kept all your stuff, Fred. I lost very little. I've got all the best things. I'll look after them for you. God bless. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 00:48:22 +1100 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?G=FCnter_Wandtke?= Subject: Re: [AVALON] RE: Best of 2001 Boots No doubt about the Sydney Memento CDs being the best of the audience recordings of the 2001 tour. However, I subscribe to the digest version of the list, and avalon-digest V7 #34 did indeed come with a copy of the myparty virus (the file www.myparty.yahoo.com was attached, and my mailer gave a warning that the attachment should be scanned prior to use/access). Thus, it appears that in this case, avalon may be partly responsible for the propagation of this virus (instead of affected list-members directly mailing other subscribers). Indeed, if you go to the list archives at smoe.org: http://www.smoe.org/lists/avalon/v07.n034 ... you can see that the virus is attached to that digest edition (in uuencoded format on the list archive). Does the listserver's configuration allow certain attachments through? Perhaps mime-format attachments are blocked, but uuencoded ones pass unhindered?
