On another topic, I use Norton anti-virus and check for updates a couple of times a week. It gave me no warning about the timtuck virus. The trojan the mail carried destroyed the mp3 file sharing programs - audiognome, audio galaxy, morpheus - we use. It also corrupted our server settings. All of the files in our shared folder were wiped out. It probably did other things as well that I don't understand but my husband has been able to repair most of the damage done. Congressman Alleges Radio Retaliation Against Music Stars January 25, 2002 QwikFIND ID: AAN09N By Ira Teinowitz WASHINGTON (AdAge.com) -- A congressman today asked the Justice Department to look into allegations that Clear Channel Communications refused to play music and "buried" concert ads of recording stars, including Britney Spears, who didn't use its promotional services. U.S. Rep. Howard L. Berman, D-Calif., said he is concerned about growing "integration" in the radio, TV and concert promotion industry. Clear Channel is the largest radio and out-of-home media company in the country. It owns radio stations and outdoor boards in addition to its entertainment venue, Clear Channel Entertainment. Promotional services In a letter to the Justice Department, Rep. Berman wrote, "It has been reported that Clear Channel has 'punished' recording artists including Britney Spears for their refusal to use its concert promotion service, Clear Channel Entertainment, by 'burying' radio ads for their concerts and by refusing to play their songs on its radio stations." In the letter, Rep. Berman warned that if the allegations are true, there would be "negative implications for consumers." "The consolidation of the radio industry also lends growing support to persistent allegations that record companies often must pay radio stations to play the music of their artists." Rep. Berman said he has also asked the Federal Communications Commission to look at whether Clear Channel illegally holds too many radio properties to comply with commission ownership limits. In a statement, Clear Channel said that it "competes aggressively, fairly and totally within the law. If there is an investigation, we are confident this will continue to be proven true." -= )-(eather =- >--------------------< hjames@thewebgal.com The Roxy Music Archives: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ My Music Trading Lists: http://www.thewebgal.com/hjames/my-boots.html Roxy Music Trade List: http://www.thewebgal.com/hjames/roxy-boots.html Van Morrison Trade List: http://www.thewebgal.com/hjames/my-van.html >-----------------------------------------------------------------------< ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2002 08:23:47 -0500 From: KB Porter Subject: Re: [AVALON] Warning!! Colleen's Nightingale Message Andrew correctly stated: smoe.org automatically strips attachments from email! Not to fan any flames, Colleen's Nightingale post came to me, through Avalon List, without any attachment or references there of. For Will, and others, concerning partyworm: This mass-mailing worm drops a BackDoor trojan (BackDoor-AAF) on WindowsNT/2K/XP system. The worm itself carries no destructive payloads. When the W32/Myparty@MM virus executable is executed on Windows NT machines, (Windows NT, 2000 or XP) a variant of this backdoor is dropped to the startup folder within the profile of the current user, MSSTASK.EXE: %userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\msstask.exe This ensures the backdoor is executed upon system startup, at which point it goes memory resident, and the machine is rendered vulnerable. W32/Myparty@MM only massmails itself and drops the backdoor component if the system date is within the following range: 25th - 29th January 2002 inclusive. Outside of this date range, no backdoor component is dropped. The attachment is an executable file with a .COM extension, not a URL. Running the attachment infects the local machine. The users default SMTP server is retrieved from the registry. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager\Accounts\00000001 The virus uses this SMTP server to send itself out to all addresses found in the Windows Address Book and addresses found within .DBX files. MSSTASK.EXE is compressed with UPX, and is 6,144 bytes in length (unpacked the file is 152,064 bytes). Once running, the backdoor tries to connect to the following IP address: http://209.151.250.170/ in order to download the command file that operates the backdoor. A second W32/Myparty@MM variant which only operates between 20th-24th January 2002 (hence will not replicate on machines with correctly set date now) drops an identical backdoor component to that described above. The only difference is the date range in which the backdoor is dropped. Other than the massmails generated, on a personal level the backdoor trojan leaves any pc running WindowsNT/2K/XP system open to anyone who wants to walk right on in! Your choice, your decision! You are on your own now - I hate to fuel the flames of paranoia - loads of info on viruses, pest, and unwanted disruptions are available from numerous credible websites - let you fingers do the walking!!! ;0) Best wishes.
