I think it's the price of pie in the sky. Seriously, there is actually a way to settle at least some of this--the SACD format is available via other labels, no? So does anyone have one of those and if so, what did it cost. I think it's pretty clear that the price in CDNOW is for the imported Japanese version. And as for that alleged Japanese release date next week, I'd really caution folks who are ponying up the money. Because I very much doubt that _Frantic_ is going to be released in Japan on February 5th and by the time the import version will be made available to you, you will be able to pick up a domestion copy for half that price. I personally watch too little t.v. to make it worth the investment. But I love *not* being confined to a stationary position when it comes to music. In fact, my home stereo unit is hooked directly to my PC where, anymore, it`s only used to remaster something to be burned to CD so as to be played in the car/Boom Box/Portable CD player. I love my portable players but you really have to take the time to sort through a lot of junk to find a unit that sounds best to you. In place of a decent graphic equalizer most units give you 3-4 sound settings that let you choose from: 1) Crappy Sound 2) Really Crappy Sound 3) Super Crappy Sound Distorted By Too Much Bass 4) Tolerable All in all, though. I think that most people are perfectly happy with two channel stereo and HDCD/SACD will go the route that Quad sound did. IMO, it`s nothing more than another attempt by the music industry to fleece the music buying public. Anyone serious about enhanced sound should look into a good graphic equalizer. A simple 5 band unit makes a world of difference but springing for a 10 or higher band unit really opens a door to a sound you never thought possible from your old LPs/CDs. Even the audience recordings passed around last summer like Berlin Beauty Queens come alive. The lead track "Roxy" pays knowing tribute to the glam rock band Roxy Music, with a little nod to Rod Stewart, too. CONCRETE BLONDE "Group Therapy" (Manifesto, 3-1/2 stars) In the glory days of moody Californian punk (Nuns, X), Concrete Blonde was the thinking man's Heart. The music's brooding, passive-aggressive moan neatly suited singer Johnette Napolitano's nihilism/romanticism to forge a poplike sound that was sexy, forlorn and poplike, in an angular way. Eight years after Blonde's previous CD, "Group Therapy" seems more urgent than previous outings, but still bittersweet. Her usual detatchment generally intact, Napolitano blows her cool just long enough to shatter the subjects of "Violent" and "Fried," "Therapy's" most frenetic and forceful songs. However, the band continues its penchant for Mexican imagery ("Your Llorona") and gothic amour, and pays tribute to to Bryan Ferry on "Roxy." Like him, Napolitano lays her sensualist rhetoric on thick with the tenderest of vocal tones, for a most welcome return. It's my song I listen to these days when I walk back from my daughter's school in the morning--sets an upbeat tone for the day. I hadn't really checked out TGPT's website til I was doing a search for CB/RM connections. What a great guy, his working class Northern frankness shines through, typos and all. Gotta meet him someday.
