Thanks KB -- but actually, I had to look no further than my own e-mail, as my simple offhanded comment prompted no less than two gracious individuals to send me image files of the photo. What a lovely list -- you have my deepest thanks. I still wish I could share that website with you, as it had quite a few Ferry photos but also of course great images of other artists with whom Corbijn's worked. But I'll have to be careful what I wish for, out loud -- someone just might provide it for me. ;-) Thanks again, Susan ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 15:00:14 -0000 From: "Cassidy, Chris J (CCS)" Subject: [AVALON] SOTW:It's my Party Not a favourite either from that Album or otherwise - I prefer his more 'serious' stuff, though a very assured performance for a youngish, inexperienced Mr Ferry. Country Life was certainly the most controversial here in the States, but Siren is probably the most recognized. I hope he uses a gal for the cover. Stupid explanation? Don't blame me but BF. In an interview he said he wanted to do a kind of Leny Riefenstahl picture in colour. You can't really "do" a Lenni Riefenstahl (or Reistaffel as she's known in Holland!) in colour. Just as you can't really do a Bruce Webber or a Herb Ritts in colour, it sort of takes the strength out of the shot for me and becomes too much representative of real life as opposed to steely graphic composition. As you probably know, Riefenstahl's photography (both stills and film) of Olympians were very beautiful and powerful, but considering she was being used as a propagandist for the Nazis(something she does to this day deny - there's a dissertation right there) I find it a little unsettling that I feel so drawn to her images. It is just another in a long line of Roxy meets Nazi imagery, from the stage design of Roxy at the Rainbow to Ferry's jackbooted storm trouper. What's that metaphor about the devil having all the best tunes? Hmmmmmmm. I think Prada athlete campaign did the Olympia take much better. The Country Life cover, where I think the girls looked quintessentially German not English, perhaps showed the banality of the whole visual, and theoretically bereft, Nazi ethos. Much more like 70's meets 30's burlesque. Hmmmmmmm maybe I'm off on a bizarre track. Having said that I hate the CL cover (despite being my favourite album)because I think it was just about girls with their kit off. BTW Raymond disagrees with me about Reifenstahl being a mere propagandist and fobs me off with some arty guff. Visually stunning films though.
