My guess is: Maggie May's lover (as immortalized by Rod Stewart) is lingering too long with her. In daylight, he looks at her and realizes Maggie May is older than he had really noticed before. He loved her beyond time, passed her prime, he wishes he hadn't noticed that she needs to be left behind. So I reckon the tribute's line "Roxy you are my Maggie May" is a complement to RM who were greatly loved by and personally influential with the tribute writer(s) but, by necessity, RM overtime were outgrown, yet still fondly remembered - like a first love. But seriously folks: someone commented yesterday on whether Bryan would put a woman on the cover, or himself, or possibly yet another horse (o.k., that last bit is mine.) And it got me thinking about the various covers. The themes here are women (obviously), or Bryan, or more abstract concepts (Avalon, Mamouna, Taxi). Anyone have any thoughts on which cover is most "successful" (fully realizing that this is a VERY subjective issue)? I say "successful" rather than "favorite" because I think the favorite cover issue has been discussed. I'm more interested in which covers you think capture a style, or make a statement, or really add something to the album. Thoughts? I'll send mine, after I've thought about it a bit (i.e. had a cup of coffee) Susan ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jan 2002 10:46:18 -0500 From: KB Porter Subject: Re: [AVALON] Cover art Colleen kids: "Lemmings, isn't it in that case? I thought lemmings were more organized - that they march into the sea, I imagine, single file. While penguins waddle as fast as they stubby flippers allow in order to break their prolonged fasts upon the completion of molting and when rookery duty is not required. I don't know if penguins 'test the waters' with their own kind in case predators are nearby, but it sounds like a smart (but ruthless) thing to do. I hear that the species, Aptenodytes Avalonities, have copyrighted their flock, and are actively seeking to franchise their rights to carnivorous groups. They are willing to trade in kind. It seems there is little rest to be had on the Isle of Avalon! I like that - us and penguins, a most odious group of groupies we be! ;-) Best wishes. And some of their music sounds unbelievably innocent, like happy memories of an imaginary childhood constructed to escape present-day sadness... so there's at least an indirect & askew connection to the Ferryesque theme of loss... oh, and Eno was executive producer of the PCO's first album.
