Personally I think it was regrettable that I've heard this too, but it doesnt't make any sense to me. More of a condescension than a tribute, in my opinion, but perhaps 30 years ago it was read differently. Although they have not posted details of the event on their site yet, you will find booking details (including a phone number for the box office AND Ticketmaster, bless their monopolistic cotton socks) at: www.oldvictheatre.com As for It's My Party: This was and remains one of my favourite tracks from TFT, on which I don't think there is one duff track. Of course, at the time and at my age (I was 15), the refusal to change the genders meant it seemed absolutely outrageous. As I had swallowed the glam rock ethos, hook line and sinker, I was overjoyed that Bryan Ferry had joined Bowie who had recently shocked some with John I'm Only Dancing. Of course, with the benefit of hindsight, BF's not changing the gender was just that - a voguish attempt to titilate. But who cares? The times were day-glo psychedelic (still) and camp was the name of the adroit game. Also, I loved the "Ha,ha, OK", followed by the count-in, that gave the impression BF and friends were just thrashing through some old favourites, rather than piecing together material brought together over some weeks, month (or, as now, some years). It all sounded fun, spontaneous and devil-may-care. So I agree with those who say it had a spirit which seems lacking in today's material... As for the song treatment itself, I love the spacey romp feel, kind of Spectoresque (although not as much as in Don't Worry Baby). Bowie and Bryan with Pin-ups and TFT respectively just were the kings of the new frontier in 73 and there was no-one who could beat them for panache, class and savoir faire. Remarkably, with some allowances, you could almost make that same statement in 2002. Although as ever I am appalled by the reminder that on the front cover, he has his hair clipped back to avoid revealing the fact his hair was still shoulder length... but just as he did musically, he always knew which strings to pull and which strokes to fake. Which is in itself important if being a fashion icon is the aim. As for the It's My Party/It's Judy's Turn To Cry, it called to mind the Jilted John pair of songs that told a similar story, albeit within more confined gender roles. That's all (as Ian Hunter would have said) Richard Mills n/p compilation of Shakespeare's Sister live recordings ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2002 11:33:32 +0000 From: "Simon Galloway" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Old Vic tickets/etc >>> 01/21 11:24 am >>> > Although as ever I am appalled by the reminder that on the front cover, > he has his hair clipped back to avoid revealing the fact his hair was still > shoulder length... The 'Angelettes' backing vocals balance Ferry's singing very nicely - they carry the tune sweetly and perfectly, underlying with a perky silkiness that successfully carries the piece. Over all, I'm ready to switch on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand", roll my bobby socks down to the tops of my saddle shoes, smile for the camera, and pray like 'H E Double L' that my shimmy is just risqui and yet wholesome enough that I make the cut and get spot-lighted. I used to work at a music video station in Tampa back in the late 80's and early 90's and I played their videos constantly. We even interviewed them on the Free tour. We were going to interview them on the Bloodletting tour, but they were opening for Sting and his management wanted our coverage of the show to dwell exclusively on him (typical Sting, really). Wasn't it the mighty Half Man Half Biscuit who, in their song Lilac Harry Quinn, sang the, for me, immortal chorus (another groupset BTW), "Sturmey Archer Campagnolo"?
