There is a version on their sole release, "The Love That Won't Shut Up." That's not to imply that Billie Holliday's version is anything less than amazing. I bought my wife a box set of her material some years ago, and everything in it is really stunning. You can tell that Bryan took a lot of inspiration from her, particularly (I think) the way her vocals, which seem to smile, belie some of the rather dark lyrics that she was singing. - --Grant _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2002 09:48:56 -0500 From: "Grant Goggans" Subject: [AVALON] Artwork scans request If anyone has complete front & back scans of the following albums or singles, would you be so good as to e-mail copies of them to me, so that they can be added to an ongoing Roxy full art database which I hope to have up and running in a couple of months? When "A Song for Europe" began, his loud chattering all but drowned out the show, and after dirty looks from us didn't work, we resorted to shushing. The moment we did so, his face contorted with an expression that can only be described as "demonic," and a flood of obscenities poured from his mouth, including threats to kill us. There was no gradual escalation here, the moment we went "shhh!" this guy went from 0 to 60 instantaneously. At one point, I really thought that I was going to have to pick up a folding chair or bottle to defend myself. And lest you think this guy was all talk, I think he was spoiling for trouble and was really ready to fight - -- there's only been a few times in my life that I've seen someone look this mean, and they've always meant business. Also keep in mind that Scott Forster had brought his young son up from Dallas to see the show, so even the visible presence of a child wasn't enough to ameliorate this man's behavior. Anyway, his tirade went the length of "A Song for Europe" and continued through "My Only Love." Eventually, this ameliorated somewhat: For the next few songs, whenever any of us would stand to applaud a performance, he'd launch into a hail of "f*** you, sit down"s -- of course this was just to provoke us since he obviously didn't give a flip about the show -- but this was at least manageable. At some point long before the end of the set, this guy, his buddy, and the two strolloping road whores they'd picked up (what the heck were these people doing at a Roxy Music show?) headed for the exits, but he'd managed to mar a once-in-a-lifetime event for me. Thank goodness that Phil's massive "Ladytron" barrage of noise and the Lucy-Wilkins-spine-tingling-jaw-dropping "Out of the Blue" solo were already in the memory banks before this incident. I remember not being able to enjoy "In Every Dreamhome" because I was too busy re-collecting my nerves, and even when the whole group of us were strolling out to the parking lot, I half-expected him to jump out of the shadows. Anyway, yesterday I was listening to a newly-acquired-from-Avalonia audience recording of one of the Los Angeles shows. Lo and behold, during "My Only Love," you can hear an argument among audience members. Apparently some guy was blocking the view of a substantial portion of this section, and when some folks asked this guy to sit down, he became immediately and disproportionately irate, and *he* yelled and cursed them during the whole course of the song, and even on into "Dreamhome." It wasn't at the frightening level of aggression that we suffered in Atlanta, but it's still pretty bad, and I certainly feel for the people in this section who were just trying to enjoy the show. So what the hell is wrong with these people? Is there just this one bully who hates Roxy Music fans and wants to ruin the shows for them? Is there something about this section of the show that engages a trigger in the subconscious of jerks -- Lucy emitting a backup vocal timbre that only unevolved primates can hear? Some sort of Eno Voodoo? It makes me really sad to think that other fans had similar experiences to ours in Atlanta. I loved everything about Roxy Music's Atlanta performance, it was my favorite show of 2001, and I'll always treasure it. But at lest for now, I can't separate the memories of the performance itself from the harrowing experience of putting up with that jerk. I just hope that one day he mouths off at a person who doesn't care about going to jail, and he gets what he deserves. later, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2002 13:53:47 -0500 From: David Subject: Re: [AVALON] fight country club Thanks Miles- now I don't feel nearly as bad about having been stuck in the cheap seats. I figured at the very least, we could tour Petworth House. Well, Petworth House was closed on Fridays and it happened to be a Friday. But, they were having a "ladies auxiliary-type" sale in the town center (there were mostly baked goods, jams, lemon curd, etc.). So we thought we'd stop there and have a bite and a cuppa tea. So this little old lady teeters over to our table and asks if she could join us, and we were happy to have some local company. My ex-husband asked her if she knew where Bryan Ferry lived. This was when I learned that he lived in Fiddleworth, however she didn't know exactly where. Then she went on to tell the story of how he'd plastered missing dog posters around the area when his dog ran off. Well, that's the story. I wish I could say something like, then, we decided to go off and hunt down the missing dog, and what do you know, we found him, and brought him right to Mr. Ferry's door, but you know the story didn't have that happy of an ending. And - guess what - Bryan is name checked! It tells Boy George's story and features other 80s characters such as Steve Strange, Phillip Sallon and Leigh Bowery. There is a scene where the Mum character turns up at Taboo (Leigh's avant garde club in Leicester Sq) looking for her son. Phillip Sallon welcomes her saying, "Come in, Bryan Ferry's over there" and she replies, "Ooh - I love Roxy Music!" Very strange! Was Bryan really so much part of the 80s club scene? The show itself is a bit disappointing tho I admire it for its novelty. Musical theatre cliches abound and there is no mention of George's relationships only the fictional boy and girl characters. And it ends with a sing a long version of Karma Chameleon which is missable. But still worth seeing all in all and the costumes are great Richard _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2002 18:24:30 -0600 From: "Judy Kaufman" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Walking the Whippet > >Although, the people who lived next door to him breaded cats.
