Oh... the party's over. And Mr. Ferry must be passing out: Mysteriously transported to the mythical isle - Avalon - to recover from too much party time, just as Arthur Rex had been ferried to recover after his last battle. The background fades out of focus. Avalon emerges. This is where fantasy and imagery are alive: Arthurian legend claims Arthur is the son of the British King Uther Pendragon. He is counseled by Merlin, and his infidel wife is Guinevere. His nephew, Mordred, seizes the kingdom and grievously wounds Arthur, prompting the fortuitous ferrying to Avalon. When the samba takes you into twilight, all that seems is real: The Round Table, Excalibur, Lancelot, the Holy Grail; yes the picture's changing, the epic fable weaves destiny's tapestry. Deeper into the dream there's no holding: Anything is possible in Camelot. Out of nowhere ravels the likes of 'Erec' and 'Iwein', 'Parzifal', 'Tristram' and 'Iseult', 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight', 'Morte d'Arthur', 'Idylls of the King', 'The Faerie Queene', 'The Once and Future King', and on and on the legend proliferates and influences this day. Every moment: Cruel death and fabulous glory, courtly love and genteel chivalry, brash conflict and blazoned crusade, tortured intrigue and odious betrayal, Middle Ages alchemy and middle age crisis. All go hand-in-hand: The samba developed into the bossa nova, don't you know? Oh, this is all too circular! Ever decreasing catwalks run throughout my mind. Spin the Avalon Platter once more! Eat, drink and dance, for the knights are cold, and Guinevere is down the Hall. God only knows why, how, what grievous wounds inflicted are healed in Avalon. What is real, and what is imagined? Sir Kay knows naught, but Merlin's owl may. Best wishes for the new year. Good luck, Gunther, a couple of kilometers of tinder box blazes in moments. I hope you've got keys in hand, and all your Roxy Music and related artists in the glove box. Oh, and don't forget the water.
