It's a tribute to the list, to all of the fun we've had this year here on list and at various shows and meetings, and to all of the fun that is yet to come. Happy New Year, y'all. Colleen As before the discussion is open to anything related to the song, and these are only suggestions: love it? hate it? lyrics/music it changed my life live vs. studio version(s) (if applicable) the video (if any) that reminds me... Avalon (Ferry) Now the party's over I'm so tired Then I see you coming Out of nowhere Much communication in a motion Without conversation or a notion Avalon When the samba takes you Out of nowhere And the background's fading Out of focus Yes the picture's changing Every moment And your destination You don't know it Avalon When you bossa nova There's no holding Would you have me dancing Out of nowhere Avalon ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Dec 2001 15:28:34 -0800 From: "N. Happy New Year, >y'all. > I never even questioned why I fell for this song, and the whole album. Overall the album was very romantic, abundantly commercial -- yes, but there was nothing smarmy about it -- nothing that said: "Here's an album that was crafted to make a buck." At first listen it was over; all but memorized note for note, syllable by syllable within a day or two. Played in the house, in the shop and in the car. Hundreds of times. All that had come before -- all the oddly jarring stuff, the gripping clenches of moody despair which had blasted out of the music in the past -- polished and glistening now, no less focused, and still very steeped in sophisticated weariness -- but now it was emotion presented without sentiment or (self-conscious or otherwise) overly-stylized performance -- with a soaring-yet-controlled musical accompaniment that seemed to have been born fully grown, and completely ready for the decade's prime time. I believed the words to Avalon, believed them and felt them and understood them. "Now the party's over. I'm so tired. Now I see you coming. Out of nowhere..." All that needs to be said. Understood and accepted without needing, or even trying, to be clever or important. We all knew where it was going; and it was real. I believe AVALON was a radical, radical change for the band, and one that may have simultaneously closed the doors of the past while setting an impossibly high standard for the future. At a minimum, it was one of the finest albums of that decade as far as I'm concerned. That last message was meant for the Chicago Avalon Martini Club, not the whole list. But, upon reflection, I don't mind if the whole list gets it. You are all welcome to play ATGB Track #6, and are all welcome for a Martini.
