A quick question about the Mamouna tour from 1994/95 - I understand that Bryan played a couple of nights in Los Angeles. Can anyone pinpoint dates, or at least the month & year? My Mamouna tourbook actually doesn't list Los Angeles as a tour destination, but I know he played there. I got out of the shower yesterday morning to catch the last few seconds of Bryan and Phil on the radio. I think it was a selection of highlights from Nicky Campbell's show. Can someone tell me what it was all about as by the time I figured out who was on they were all giggling hysterically and were completely incomprehensible. Sounded like fun. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and got lots of Roxy stuff in their stockings ;-) Jane. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Dec 2001 09:30:56 -0800 From: neeek@wgn.net Subject: Re: [AVALON] Swim at your own risk At 09:00 AM 12/26/01 , you wrote: >I wonder where they are in this pic? looks like California. > >http://pictures.care2.com/view/2/720705852 > >David It looks like one of the Hollywood canyons -- Laurel Canyon most likely. She ventured that with the criticism Bryan was bound to get from releasing a new album, is it any wonder about his reluctance. I think most musicians are pretty thick skinned. By virtue of the nature of the industry, you are either pretty thick skinned or you learn to be as a survival tool. This is not to say that you don't wear your heart on your sleeve. You just can't afford to take the critics too seriously. I don't see a dichotomy here. I think what is of greater concern to an artist, however is indifference. Mamouna barely recorded a blip on the charts. The radio stations here in LA ignored the record...with the narrowing of formats it is hard to imagine his next release standing much of a commercial chance. I hope Bryan proves me wrong. For god's sake put something out already and let the chips fall where they may. Running out of time. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Dec 2001 22:32:13 +0100 From: "Stefan Thomsen" Subject: [AVALON] Ferry, a Danish interview from 1995 Hi, Avalonians! I just found an interview from a Danish musician. http://home13.inet.tele.dk/pkb/interview.htm This is the translation: A Danish Men's magazine, Euroman, December 1995. "It's been three years since I met Bryan Ferry for the first time. At that time I was a journalist. Today I can meet him on equal terms. For three years I have played a number of concerts all over Denmark as drummer in the band called "Per Kristensen Band", and now I am familiar with the life behind the scene and the emotions and dangers which rocklife has. Roxy Music was Bryan Ferry's entrance to the rockscene. Ferry comes from a Northern Town, from a working class family, and before he started to sing, he had been interested in the world of art, form and design, but with Roxy Music he suddently became famous. All this he has in common with Per Kristensen, singer of Per Kristensen Band." - -I play in a band, called Per Kristensen Band. Most of us are not very good musicians, but we have an idea/concept. Was this the way you felt in Roxy Music? (BF) -Yes, actually. We had a lot of imagination and one of our great advantages, was, that none of us was well known. But I had an idea (concept). I had been a great musicfan all my life. At age 11 I listened to jazz and blues, later on "black beat". And the others had a lot of things, they wanted to try. Brian Eno was very much into synthesizere and Andy Mackay played the obo, which I thought was very cool; and then there was Phil Manzanera, who at that time was a guitarist still loking for his style. He was ready to experiment all the time and often played with his head hanging down, if I asked him to. - -Per, the singer in our band, and I was ordenairy friends before we made the band. But things has changed a bit now. These days he can come to me after a concert to shake hands and thank me. He has become like a boss to me. Did you also go in that direction? (BF) -No, we were not like that. We were not friends until we formed Roxy Music and...well, now that you mention that history, I do kind of regonize some of it. We had a bass player (?), called Paul Thompson. He came from Newcastle, like I did, and the two of us could talk the northern dialect in a way that the others couldn't understand anything. He was a manual worker with long hair, and he always came to practice sessions rigtht from work, all dusted. When we played our first gigs, we had to go and get him from the construction site, right before the show. After the shows, I could go to him and slap him on the shoulders. We had a kind of "Officer and Gentleman" relationship. I was the educated and cultivated. Merry Xmas and a happy New Year. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Dec 2001 22:30:42 0000 From: "diane whateley" Subject: [AVALON] RE:Glasgow Chapter Meet Last call just to remind everyone in the 'central belt' that we're 'on' for Friday at the Tron Theatre bar at 8pm....btw, snow is forecast...a wee bit deja vu for some of us?!! I don't know if she was connected, but in the mid to late 70's, there was a DJ on WNEW-FM in New York City named Allison Steele, aka, "The Nightbird" She had a late night program and played a lot of Yes, ELP, Renaissance, etc. She would play complete albums, and I remember hearing Manzanera's "Diamond Head" late one night (complete with headphones and under the influence). She would begin her program with a lengthy piece of prose and then use her signature line to begin the music ("Come, Fly with me..."). She passed away several years ago.
