Colleen, I feel, in fact, Bryan's performance at Jools Holland, a bit hard to watch! It is so nerve-racking to se he is so nervous and tremling, but is still able to sing and smile...and my heart is aching for him.... I believe he had not performed much these last years and "was not used to it". Still I love this cover most of all. It's very special to me! I think it looks like Jools knows how he feels too... They have not always been in this position of exclusive consideration; several other industry mags have reported charts over the years. Most of the time, Cashbox was Billboard's only serious rival in the industry, but Billboard gradually beat them out of the market. Billboard maintained a newsstand presence while Cashbox was generally a subscription-only beast. Billboard parlayed its chart information into mass market paperbacks. Finally Billboard began compiling its charts from that SoundScan data used in most major chains for increased and immediately accurate figures. Cashbox couldn't compete and folded about ten years ago. I had the opportunity for 90 minutes' worth of anoraky research in the UGA library this weekend. Now, I could have geeked out over various proper subjects for weirdo research -- my senior paper at UGA was on Ezra Pound's theories about fascism being the most solid basis for any nation's economic policy, and there are dozens of weirdo avenues within that topic I never had the chance to follow -- but fortunately for the other anoraks on-list, I had the bright idea to see how Bryan Ferry records charted in Cashbox and dug up some of that stuff instead. I didn't finish what I planned to dig up, but here's what I found out in the time I had to myself. On the singles chart, Cashbox reported lower positions for most of the singles that appeared in Billboard. Neither "Heart on My Sleeve" (Billboard #86) nor "Slave to Love" (Billboard "Bubbling Under" #1; effectively (but arguably) #101) charted in Cashbox. The other singles were: Love is the Drug: Cashbox #24, Billboard #30 Dance Away: Cashbox #51, Billboard #44 Over You: Cashbox #90, Billboard #80 Kiss and Tell: Cashbox #45, Billboard #31 Oddly, I could find no evidence for a figure I copied down from some book or magazine over a decade ago -- that the "Avalon" single charted at #26 in Cashbox. It's on the album chart that things are seriously skewed. Many of the albums, outside of 1976-79, performed better on the Cashbox album chart than on the Billboard chart, with an astonishing 92-point difference between Stranded's position on the two charts. Here are the figures: Roxy Music: did not chart in Cashbox or Billboard For Your Pleasure: Cashbox #161, Billboard #193 These Foolish Things: did not chart in Cashbox or Billboard Stranded: Cashbox #94, Billboard #186 Another Time Another Place: did not chart in Cashbox or Billboard Country Life: Cashbox #34, Billboard #37 Siren: Cashbox #42, Billboard #50 Viva! Roxy Music: Cashbox #84, Billboard #81 Let's Stick Together: Cashbox #166, Billboard #160 In Your Mind: Cashbox unknown, Billboard #126 The Bride Stripped Bare: Cashbox #176, Billboard #159 Manifesto: Cashbox #30, Billboard #23 Flesh + Blood: Cashbox unknown, Billboard #35 Avalon: Cashbox #32, Billboard #53 The High Road: Cashbox #50, Billboard #67 Boys and Girls: Cashbox #57, Billboard #65 The 92-point difference between the two charts for Stranded is surprisingly not the oddest chart oddity I've ever seen. In 1984, the Melody Maker chart listed Julian Cope's "Sunspot" single at #36 (or 32, I forget). The "official" chart used by the Guinness books of British hit singles, and which I think is printed in Music Week, said that the single did not appear in the top *200* at all. Anyway, that's my goofball post of the month.
