Great to to get your thoughts (BTW I've been trying to get in touch with you but my mail has bounced a couple of times). Our server's been playing up for a while now. Interesting thoughts there about Name of the Rose, but for fear of confusing the beejazus out of poor old Arnie again (you've got a point there Arnie!)I'll politely move on. But I have noticed a worrying tendency in us both to cast melancholic fops in our films! The 3 mike trick is amazingly powerful and not the gimmick it might sound written cold on the page. But it was Will Gregory's string arrangements that blew me away. I wasn't sure they could reproduce the CD sound on stage, but it was fuller, lusher, more decadent. I would love to see Goldfrapp perform with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. And if any of you boys out there are interested, Alison Goldfrapp had the most amazing costume on that made her look like she'd stepped straight out of a Allan Jones painting. And Goldfrapp are not without irony, they performed an amazing reworking of Olivia Newton John's Physical as an encore. "You know what *I* mean"-- those times when people just don't get it. My personal favorites are all those reviews that spend most of their ink on the band's stage attire (you can read them on Manzo's website, the Roxy Music Archive). Or my roommate's habit of dismissing the entire RM catalogue based on factors such as the width of Ferry's lapels in certain concert footage. Please share-- talk about those instances of parental confusion, scorn from friends, vitriol spewed by reviewers who didn't see the big picture, etc. jENNIFER "I don't matter, you don't matter Neither does this mindless clatter." -P.T. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Dec 2001 14:43:19 -0500 From: "Grant Goggans" Subject: [AVALON] Public shout-out -- re: Sayonara Moon artwork Because I have no idea who did what in this shady world of anonymous artists and pseudonymous PhotoShop users... I mentioned Bryan on another newsgroup, and someone replied, "You know, I was thinking just the other day what a miserable old sod he is. He acts like he's a member of rock's elite, and yet what has he released in anyone's recent memory?" This was when As Time Goes By was up for a Grammy. In the section for July there's about a quarter page with the heading: Roxy Music: Sex, Cummerbunds, Rock & Roll. Text reads: "It was the answer to a glam-rock maiden's prayer: a full-fledged reunion tour for Roxy Music, the star-dusted gentlemen who made some of the sleekest, sexiest rock of the Seventies. For the first time since 1983, debonair crooner Bryan Ferry joined old mates Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera and Paul Thompson, sending crowds into glitter-gasmic convulsions with such hits as "Avalon" and "Love Is The Drug," as well as the mind-blowing glam epics "Mother of Pearl," "Both Ends Burning" and "In Every Dream Home a Heartache." Original keyboardist Brian Eno didn't take part. "I just don't like the idea," he said. "It leaves a bad taste." (Bad taste? Roxy Music?) Said Ferry, "It was never an issue. We didn't even ask him." There's a very nice picture of Bryan singing with the caption: Bryan Ferry: For your pleasure. Cameron Crowe added about 35 minutes to the film and the DVD has some extras, including some old interviews with Lester Bangs where he has some really terrible things to say about Bryan. His delivery is fairly amusing, though. He related an experience about meeting Bryan and being anxious to tell him how much he liked Stranded. He said that in person he found Bryan to be "vacuous" and suggested that he should be propped up in a corner somewhere with a martini. Colorful bonus material. ;-) - -Rob ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2001 23:23:13 -0600 From: "Judy Kaufman" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Uncut and other outrages > What's your favorite most ignorant reaction to the band we're all here to > discuss?
