Sorry for the long boring post, but just an important word of caution and warning to all. As you have heard there has been a very nasty little "virus program" making the rounds again lately and many list members here as well as folks who frequent the other Roxy Music related message boards have been bit. First the Basic Info: The virus pops in via an e-mail attachment and once the attachment is opened, heads silently, but directly, to your own e-mail address book. From there it sends out e-mails with its own offspring attachment to those listed there. Now I know this sounds like old news and you may be saying,: "I know about this and I know what not to open". But, this insidious little bastard seems to actually look at the past e-mail subject matter "titles" that are in your "in box" and clones a name for itself based on one of these titles in order to deceive you and the future recipient. Nice stuff huh? Insidious part two: If you should try to send an inquiry back to the sender via the original letters "Reply" function as to what this attachment may be this little "shit" of a virus will place, unknown to you, an "_" (underscore) in front of that return e-mail address rendering it undeliverable. You will then get a return e-mail titled "Mail delivery failed" from your mail server which will only heighten your curiosity regarding the original attachment. These attachments have been *.txt files that have been 0 (zero) bytes in size. Obviously, if you should receive a letter from someone unknown with an attachment, do not open the attachment, simply permanently delete the letter, attachment and all. If you receive a letter from some one you DO know and it has an attachment you were not expecting, do not open it without being completely sure what it is. Also, buy low, sell high, stay out of the rain and dont forget your umbrella and wellies. All the best John Dillon ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Dec 2001 12:25:23 -0600 From: Jim Rosencutter Subject: Re: [AVALON] WARNING: Another Virus Attack Heather James wrote: > There's nothing wrong with Outlook 98 or WIN 98 - you just have to > update it VERY regularly to make sure that when the bugs get found they > get fixed real quick. The easiest way to tell if you have the virus is to click the "Start" button then go to "Documents" and look for an unfamiliar app and/or file.
