The lyric to this song might just be one of the only real insights to Ferrys psyche, before he hit the lost love vein of Siren onwards (although a similar subject, although not as subtle was touched upon in "Still Falls the Rain). The scizophenic/dual personality nature of the performance suggests an eventual outcome of it starting as a suicide note, which the narrator eventually manages to confront his own demons and cast them away as the new day dawns. I believe Ferry wrote some of For Your Pleasure in the Yorkshire moors (Bronte country perhaps), perhaps it was the desolate landscapes around him that inspired this song, or was this the first signs of the depressive in him that would catch up with him (as reported) later in life. So yes a wonderful song, not exactly easy listening and perhaps lost amongst several other immaculate songs & performances. I love it. Terry "O" transitions from "Lord Of The Rings" to "Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone" with: "Did You fly?, if so exactly what did you fly on? a Nimbus 2000?" LOL, Terry - sorry you didn't appreciate the word enumeration I gave while attempting to convey the complex meaning of 'bete noire'. My apologies. But I wouldn't recommend flying in the US these days anywhere near inclement weather. The airlines are now thinly stretched that stranded equipment becomes a problem - my return flight was canceled two times, I got shuttled around on buses for hours, sat nearly two days in airports, slept four hours in a run-down Ramada Inn supplied by American Airline, brushed my teeth in public - yuck! Just wished I'd bought that new Nimbus 2002 from the shop window down Diagon Alley. :) ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2001 17:11:35 +0000 From: "Andrew Shearer" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: Enrico Tomaso I don't know if it was mentioned the first time it was shown on TV. Apparently Enrico is regarded as one of the best jazz trumpet players in the UK now. I've been lying low for a bit due to pressure of work and have watched each of my fave Roxy/Bf songs go by without having the time to comment on them. Dance Away, Where or When, Chance Meeting - all ones close to my heart but time was pressing... so now for a concerted effort on 'Strictly Confidential' which I LOVE. > > love it? hate it? Absolutely totally and utterly love it. Sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it - always pulls off the feat of sounding like it was written when it was set - in the middle of the night. For me it really captures how Ferry wrote the album - in the middle of nowhere, on his own, in the dark ( I think it was winter when he wrote the album - maybe I'm wrong about that). There's a tension between despair and terror - I always feel a little panicked when I hear the song, there's a sense of 'tumbling' in it > lyrics/music > it changed my life I love the low-key start musically, but dramatically sentiment-wise. I can still sense exactly how I felt the first time I heard this song when I hear that opening. It always catches me out, no matter what.... Then the music changes - and I think we hear this again in Sentimental Fool - - the multi tracking of voices in contrast to the solo voice heightens the latter's abandoned and despairing tone. I love the imagery of the song and a line that stands out for me is 'Over the hills and down the valleys, soaring aloft and far below' the image of the bird flying free is one which sounds to be full of such yearning to the vocalist. Of course, it could link to the line before it i.e. falling down those hills etc or it could link to the lines after and be about planting, but not for me. On a less angst -ridden note, I also love the line 'Could it be evil thoughts become me?' That line always makes me smirk which probably says why I like it (and Dorothy Parker). > live vs. studio version(s) (if applicable) Never had the pleasure of 'being there' when this song's been done live so can't comment. The studio versions's just grand. > the video (if any) Once again .... but I think it should look as if it had been directed by Pabst. > that reminds me... Of when I was young and how the heart doesn't grow old. Great thread, keep up the good work Colleen.
