I love Mandy Patinkin (I know some people can't stand him and admittedly, he can get carried away while he's singing and not performing in a role --- and he was fantastic on Chicago Hope) and he covered "Where or When" on his album Experiment. I much prefer his version - it flows more smoothly and dreamily sweeps you up. Bryan's version is painful for me to listen to. Mandy also covered "As Time Goes By" on that album. Which reminds me - I have yet to buy Mandy's latest album..... "Chance Meeting" is one of my favorites as it combines everything I love about Roxy--interesting music, heartfelt lyrics, and true emotion. I think "Where or When" is the absolute jewel on _As Time Goes By_ (an album long time list members know I found very disappointing), and one of the best songs Ferry has ever sung (either original or cover version), right up there with "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." It's bleak and soulful and wondrous all at the same time, with that mournful arrangement and his hushed whisper of a voice singing it. Mr. Ferry seemed to disappear right up into the song on the opening night of that tour--it was really quite a moment when the audience just stood as transfixed as he was by the song. Unlike the rest of the album (save perhaps "I'm In the Mood For Love") which feels like some uber self-conscious Acting 101 exercise in "Olde Tyme Style," "Where or When" exudes something Real. And that's something quite wonderful indeed. I am very surprised to learn that I only have 2 versions of this song in my CD collection (the other being by George Micheal). ATGB for me was a triumph not for the performance of BF, but the song selection. Where or When, When Somebody thinks your Wonderful, You do Something to me, September Song and especially Miss Otis Regrets have been revelations to me and I have since tracked down some other interpretations of these songs. People often talk of people making cover versions their own, "Smoke get's in your eyes" being an example, but I feel this can never be as these songs are there to be interpreted, each time it is done should bring something new to the song. Where or When, I love it. Ferrys version, I love it too. A triumph. Terry "O" PS: On ATGB it is credited to Rogers & Hart it should be Rodgers. To me things like that are important and shouldn't be wrong, call me picky but imagine the outcry if someone covered a Ferry song and it was credited to Brian Ferri!. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2001 20:18:07 -0000 From: "terrypaulrigz8c" Subject: [AVALON] Rodgers & Hart: The Missing link!!!! Chance Meeting is probably the reason I'm on this list. I didn't go to any of the ATGB concerts. I did know about the tour but had just come back to the UK after living in the US for three years and going to concerts was pretty low on my list of priorities at that time. I bought the DVD soon after it came out though and was enchanted by Chance Meeting but had forgotten it so completely (I must have heard it before) that I was surprised to learn it was a Roxy Music song - and that was the start of my rekindled interest. Bryan and Roxy had been such a large part of my teenage years that when the tour started I found I was reluctant to go along in case they were a disappointment. I eventually bought tickets and stood about 30 rows back at Wembley hardly able to see the stage, catching glimpses of Bryan over the shoulders of two large guys with lots of hair, with a complete idiot behind me who seemed to be confused as to who he had come to see and had to keep reminding himself by shouting "Bryan Ferry" at the top of his voice at every opportunity. Despite all this, I was utterly entranced, and that was it. I joined the Avalon list, spent the Summer booking concerts as they became available, feeling like a kid again and had a wonderful time. It seems appropriate that this song is about friends meeting unexpectedly after a long time as that's exactly what it did for me and I suppose it did change my life a little.
