Could any of our American members offer some better local info? I did not think that song quite fit Reed's style. I think a tune like Working Class Hero would have matched his style much better. As we all know Lou is not known for "pretty" songs. A shame this song didn't get more response, although I recall some roundabout discussion of Brief Encounter, the movie Chance Meeting was supposedly based on. I'm very fond of this song. There's at least four very available versions, and I think a number of boots, so obviously Bryan and the guys liked it too. I thought I liked the B-side/Let's Stick Together album version best, but after reviewing them all, I still like the one on the first album best. It does not sound dated at all to me, and Bry's voice is so young-sounding, yet mannered and distant. Phil's dissonant guitar is what really allows me to read meaning into this song. Although the lyrics are obviously addressing a girl who meant a great deal to the narrator in the past, the tone is so cold and devoid of feeling, while the guitar is so darkly ominous, showing a *great* deal of inner turmoil and emotion at this resurfacing of a past lover. Then he walks on, and is caught up in the conflict between his laissez-faire exterior and turbulent explosion of memory. A little song, yes, but residing somewhere in my top 30 BF/Roxy fave tracks. (The ATGB arrangement was very unique, too.)
