Jagger has really struggled with this before and his new album apparently suffers an even worse fate, at least here in the UK. <http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20011120/en/music-jagger_3.html> LONDON (Reuters) - Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger's new solo album sold just 954 copies on its first day on sale in the U.K., according to British newspapers Wednesday. Despite a massive publicity effort, the 58-year-old singer's fourth solo album ``Goddess In The Doorway'' was lying at number 85 in the British charts. On the same day, Robbie Williams' new album ``Swing While You're Winning,'' sold 73,000 copies. The Daily Mail quoted a music industry insider as saying: ``These results have staggered everyone. ``They are very, very disappointing considering the Jagger publicity machine has been absolutely wonderful.'' Jagger's spokesman Bernard Doherty said: ``I cannot possibly comment on the album sales. It is far too early to tell.'' I think Jann Wenner has it right: "In terms of consistency, craftsmanship and musical experimentation, Goddess in the Doorway surpasses all his solo work and any Rolling Stones album since Some Girls. It does so by returning to the dance beats, big grooves and the modern edge that have characterized the Stones' best work....Jagger has poured his heart into this album. The strongest songs... are also the most candidly personal. In the past, he has slipped into various personae - the Street Fighting Man, Jumpin' Jack Flash, the Man of Wealth and Taste - but he lets his guard down to an unprecedented degree on Goddess; the beautiful ballads draw on feelings of loneliness, vulnerability, spiritual yearning and, as always, life with the ladies." (Rolling Stone Issue #883-884). Anyway, Goddess will have to tide me over until we get the new Ferry release. At the end of a long Thanksgiving day (and a special one for most Americans, I think) I must express my gratitude to the Avalon group for its remarkable panache (and some fine CDs from certain members). > Lead singer from successful band goes solo again: it's rarely easy. > Jagger has really struggled with this before and his new album > apparently suffers an even worse fate, at least here in the UK. > > Rolling Stone gave Jagger's new album a five-star, classic, rating.
