Well folks, this was just before the dawn of the Rock and Roll era. Thank god Rock around the Clock came along in August to shake things up ( and later Elvis, Chuck Berry, etc.). So here we are 46 years later ( yikes) and who's at the top of the charts? Brittney Spears. Will she be the Joan Weber of her day? I wonder if Bryan was a Joan Weber fan? Anyone have a clue? I wanted to see what was No. 1 on my birthrate (Jan. 13) for the years that followed. I did a random sampling from the 60's and found that a lot of Beatle tunes(and one by the Monkees) were No. 1 on my special day. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! I was particularly moved by the fact that My Sweet Lord by George Harrison was No. 1 in 1971. I've played that song a lot in times of trouble. Lyrically, it's probably one of Bryan's simplest (yet effective) songs he has ever composed. I fell in love with the song the first time I heard it and it remains one of my favourites to this day. At one point in my life, the song held a lot of meaning and was played very heavily on my turntable. It was also one of several Roxy Music / Bryan Ferry songs that inspired a range of short stories and poems I wrote late '70s - early '80s. (None of which, were any good or survive!) Although Bryan emotes far more on his "Let's Stick Together" version, I feel the incredibly wonderful wierdness of the backing on the original makes it superior. Can anybody please explain how this haunting arrangment was achieved? (e.g: were musical instruments used?). I also love the way the end is mixed with the beginning of "Both Ends Burning" on "Viva! I'm a little late on this topic, but I can't miss the opportunity to admit I LOVE Dance Away!!! This "unworthy" song holds a unique position and was my guiding star (!) to the whole thing! So it changed my life! Really! Now I know perfectly well it was a Roxy Music Light that lighted my fire, first and foremost on Bryan's voice, but it didn't take long before I felt my both ends burning for the whole Roxy catalogue...and I was chained and bound in the magical Ferryland forever................ If you don't know it, I'm the "grandmother of Avalon", (no es verdad, Ignacio? ;-D), and if there had been any charts when I was born, I can imagine the original 'Smoke gets in your eyes' at the top of the Top 10! In the '70's and 80's I was the manager of the record shop (the record bar, Reecey) at the University of Oslo. I had to deal with all categories in the music world and had very little spare time for listening. In the evenings, at home, I wanted silence. If I put on a record, it was classical guitar to calm me down. It could also be Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis and Ray Charles, but I remember the jazz label ECM's "...the most beautiful sound..next to silence" sounded good in my ears in those days. In my job I knew my theory and knew what place to put the records in the shop. I perfectly well knew, as I both ordered and sold hundreds of them, who Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry were, but I saw no reason to listen to them ..any more than all the other rock bands! I have never forgot the cover of Avalon and for weeks I put the LP on top, in my report to the charts, I know! I had colleagues, of course, that wanted to play music on the loudspeakers (oh, my poor head!) and some of it had steal into my brain. I didn't know what it was. For years after I had quit this job, I was searching for this special sound I wanted so much to hear again!.. Then..one day I heard DANCE AWAY! I started to Laught Out Loud, oh my God, I was so happy! Here it was, that incredible charming and seducing voice that sounded like no one else! I needed this voice in my life! I didn't stop smiling for days!.. >From that moment I would gladly have traded all my 2000 LP/CDs for all the RMandBFsolo stuff! Bryan's music contains all kind of music! The arrangements is the key ..together with his voice and lyrics, and I love it all! No one could be more happy to hear Roxy Music at their best in Copenhagen Sept.18! I cried and laught, danced and sang in front of Bryan, even tried to sing Dance Away louder than him! My father was a composer too, but I have always found it extremely difficult to discuss music. To me music is feelings, and I don't think I have the right to criticize other peoples feelings! There's no accounting for tastes. You like the music or you do not..or, you are allowed to not feel anything at all for it, that's a good thing! Neither could I sit in judgement on Bryan's music. I think he is a genius, but obviously some of you don't agree. Some will say his genius disappeared in 1975! When you start at the top, where can you go from there?. Bryan, as we know, always wanted to go further on, so he just had to take other ways around. I can very well understand why he hestitates to release new work. All this expectations to his new album, oh, I wouldn't have dared, when I knew I'll be the target of ruthless critics everywhere! And it will be worse ..as time goes by................. Remember Bryan told many months ago that he is (um...was) pleased with it!! If some of you are still there...thank you! I also treasure a few ECM CDs in my collection, particularly Jan Garbarek, who , I guess, would get along well with Andy Mackay. Inspite of my preferences being firmly set on the early Roxy Music I can still take each release for what they are and appreciate them. "Dance Away" is a great pop song and I have similar feelings for it as for some of the better Abba songs. I even liked the Flesh and Blood CD and it was a hard to miss fact, that "Oh Yeah" and "My Only Love" where some of the biggest successes of the reunion tour. I love the "As Time Goes Bye" CD and epecially like the 2000 interpretations of older material. Somehow that appears to be where Bryan's heart is these days, maybe more then with the more verbatim warming up of the songs he did 25 to 30 years ago, as we saw on the reunion tour. (Of course, I still loved every minute of it ) Gunter ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V6 #542 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
