'The High Road' to be made available on DVD I'm grateful to Roxyrama contributor Brigitte who has informed me that 'The High Road' a Roxy Music concert filmed in 1982 will be released soon on DVD. I can only find details for Germany at the moment, where a Region 2 (compatible with European machines) DVD will be made available from the 6th of December. This is according to the German website of Internet retailer Amazon. Details here: http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005RD5J/qid%3D1005823007/028-676136 9-4693340 I would like to think that the DVD might include the interview and background footage the BBC shot at the time, but personally I'm doubtful it will. A few postings ago I wrote that Manifesto was the one Roxy album that I could "do without". It was a bit tongue in cheek as I do have the vinyl, cd and remaster versions. I own them because I tend to being "completist" rather than fundamentalist and would not wish to be dispossed of any Roxy/Ferry albums (bar the endless compilations). My real point was that if I had to, Manifesto would be the album I would sacrifice because, in my considered opinion, only about 4 songs are perhaps worthy of positive comment, the rest being a disservice to their previous, and later work. Flesh and Blood is an album I rarely play and don`t rate it too highly. Avalon is well crafted, sound quality is excellent and I like it a lot. Commercial of course and was intended to be - but it hits you as being clean and honest, whereas Manifesto and to a lesser extent F&B has it`s tedious moments. As to a different musical direction, who`s to say? it`s all we`ll ever know. Overall though, I compare Roxy to rock music what Fawlty Towers was to comedy, there was enough to keep us wanting more and then we were left in thin air holding a few classics. Actually I would consider Fawlty Towers to be the "Country Life" or perhaps "Siren" of comedy as compared to M. I think Ferry has said this is one song that he's particularly proud of, lyrically speaking, and I vaguely remember Cleese saying the same about the Dead Parrot -- but at the same time, perhaps both Ferry and Cleese are tired of performing them? Maybe they should trade off, just for kicks. I think "The Fish Slapping Dance" would be my "For Your Pleasure" ... Haven't been around the last couple of days. The emails soon build up on this list. Anyway, I take your point. I hope people find it interesting to know that Elvis covered these songs too. Also, 'Walk A Mile In My Shoes' isn't as well known as the other songs. I think it's interesting that Elvis covered it. Good attempt by Bryan, but try to hear Elvis' version and tell me which you think is best. I think Bryan makes an excellent job of 'He'll Have To Go' - seems to add his own style to it. I think Jim Reeves was a bit before my time. I grew up with Elvis' versions on songs in the 70s. So, yes I'm a big Elvis fan. Don't get me wrong, I'm also crazy about Bryan Ferry, obviously. I'm glad I caught Roxy Music on tour this year. Totally missed them in the 70s. And Bryan is a 'local lad' from here in the North East. I don't have to go far to see his old stomping ground. I have to go all the way to Memphis for Elvis! Anyway, thanks for clearing that up.
