Not just for America, but radio friendly the world over, and it still sounds great on the radio 22 years later. Just before the reunion tour was about to kick off I was on a bus into town, the driver had a pocket radio doing its best to make a noise, blaring out some radio station, when that familiar intro started. Hearing it unexpectadly sent shivers up my spine!!! It rang out clearly and strongly and got a few people on the bus whistling/humming/muttering along (or were they just the usual bus nutters..?). It's one of those songs that still affects people of a certain age (I'd say mid 30s) who probably smooched to it at the school disco (you can fill in the rest of that scene for yourself). Like it or not, it was a big hit and will be remembered by the public at large as a classic Roxy song. And I happen to like it. So there! I don't particularly like it, no. It was originally written for "The Bride Stripped Bare" sessions, but wasn't included(I kinda wish Ferry just swapped This Island Earth for Dance Away to tell the truth). Is this the first instance? I don't know, but after quite a few Roxy songs of smoke and mirrors, this seemed to me to be the first "genuine" Bryan Ferry song to appear on a Roxy album. Obviously pertaining to Ferry's breakup with Jerry Hall, it let the listener "see" what the breakup and the press were doing to him(Ferry's relationship with the press...wonder if that press scene in the Slave to Love video was Ferry's fantasy, to leave him alone when he's in a bad place). Sonically I thought it had a good beat to, but seemed to be more of Ferry solo-type song, rather than a "true" Roxy song. The remix on the picture disk of Manifesto was a lot better if you asked me, longer, with er...interesting melody and beat shifts. But this is where it starts to become pretty obvious that Bryan's really running the show and that his mood for artistic exploration was beginning to delve into atmospherics, what sound sets the mood, rather than just going out to find what weird new sounds to throw on an album at any given moment.
