You can choose one of each of these buttons for 4 different tracks. If you press the same button again, you get another track (ie two tracks per button =8). I hope this makes sense. There were only 4 program tracks, but because the 4 programs were in stereo (side by side on the tape), you got twice as many audio tracks - the tape was 8-tracks wide. But because you had to run the same strip of audio tape through the transport 4 times to play the whole "album" once, 8 track tapes were subject to a greater amount of wear than a cassette tape. Casettes had 2 program sides and each was in stereo, so they had 4 "tracks" across a much narrower tape. The tape speed was faster on 8 track (3 3/4 inches per second IPS) than the 1 7/8 IPS of cassettes, so the initial sound quality of factory (commercial) 8 tracks was better than that of commercial cassette tapes. It wasn't until better metal oxides (the coating on the plastic tape) and Dolby Noise reduction arrived that cassette tapes became the medium of choice. 8 Tracks? Good riddance! The only songs that stand out for me are LITD and .... the OUTSTANDING & AWESOME, "Both Ends Burning." I agree with you on this one. I've had days where every word rings true. I was glad it was added to the set list when Roxy played in Chicago. The backdrop, the lighting ( sorry Andrew), the dancing girls, etc. underscored the feelings of wanting/having /feeling it all whatever the consequences. Siren was on my turntable( and later 8-track) a lot when it was released. LITD was a welcome break from what was considered "disco" at the time. Still a good dance tune. I'm surprised to find myself in David's camp, but here I am. As much as I would love to be able to bring myself to hate this song, I can't. For all its surface glitter and shallowness, it's really quite a magnificent pop song in the end, with a sad, melancholy core which I'm sure many, if not most of us, can identify with--lost or unrequited or doomed love, which brings a lot of us here to begin with. In "Dance Away" you get the briefest glimpse of the old Roxy and a foreshadowing of the smoothness of the upcoming _Avalon_. And you also hear the Latin rhythms which will become much sleeker and sophisticated in _Bete Noire_ beyond ("I'm In the Mood For Love" comes to mind as well). I didn't think it came off that well live this summer (having only seen two shows and not having any reunion boots in my possession being my caveat), although it was indeed a huge crowd pleaser to be sure, and there's neither shame nor harm in that, now that I think about it a few months later. Certainly people are entitled to have whatever song they prefer as their favorite, and for every time I sighed impatiently through "Jealous Guy" over the years, someone else has been bored to tears by "Casanova" or the like. But, ironically, I thought it sounded flat on this tour. (This, I admit, could have been a fault of the overall context.) I did hear it on the _Bete Noire_ tour at Great Woods (or at least I think I did), and I have to say that that night it absolutely transported the entire audience and brought down the house. Colleen (who, btw, thinks so poorly of _Manifesto_ that she doesn't own it in any format whatsoever.
