I'm not sure I'd argue it's more "commercial"....... At the time of Sirens release, I think most fans would agree that it appeared more commercial as it was obvious Roxy had progressed from their more innovative style, but then the writing on the wall surely was Country Life. Only Bitter Sweet and Triptych could possibly have given them some credence to their earlier work. I have always rated Siren highly because I think it "flows" well and I enjoy every song on the album. I do agree that it is more accessible and would probabily appeal more to "fence sitters" where Roxy appreciation is considered. Now I would certainly not rate it as particularly commercial. We would all, I think, consider F+B and Avalon as commercial but I do like them within that context. Manifesto - is the only commercial Roxy album that would be the one I could "do without". Trash, Cry Cry Cry and Aint That So does nothing for me and I think the whole album somehow appears forced. Awaiting the flack. Manifesto (title track) was a great song compared to the rest of the album, I have always felt that Bryan was forced back into Roxy Music due to the failiure of TBSB. It sounds to me, with all it's opposing styles like a band without a direction. I would be surprised if most people didn't agree that this was Roxys poorest album. However along with Manifesto I do like Stronger Through The Years & Spin me Round. I guess it's another case of each to their own. I remember being mesmerised by the disembodied voice pleading from off stage, pure drama as a dissolute Ferry sloped on from stage left, eyes pinned firmly to the stage floor as he made every lingering footstep count. The ridiculous falsetto appeared to ring true at the time (even though it doesn't stand up on bootleg) and I saw right from the beginning of that tour, through to the end (around 11 concerts if memory serves me well) and never did Sentimental Fool seem to work better than at Trentham Gardens Stoke (about 3rd in on the tour), when neither the band nor Ferry's chords had been given time to be honed to perfection. Was it Danilo who recently posted something about Ferry enjoying opera? I think this performance and range of song (both vocally and emotionally) is pure opera. I have a (not very good) photo of this very moment somewhere. I'll scan it and send it to O'Brien if anyone's interested. The screenplay for this film was adapted by Noel Coward from his stage play "Still Life" (I think). These are my pride and joy but for the right price or trade I am willing to deal. I have all USA releases except the first greatetst hits. There are also Manzanera, Mackay, Eno, Explorers Wetton/Manzanera, Ferry solos. if anyone has an offer, please e-mail me privately. This is nothing definite but times change and I have to weigh a new turntable over letting my albums go. I have about 775 and maybe it is time. A trade for cd is possible. Iam looking for the Eno boxes and other surprises. Thanks for reading....Jeff ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2001 18:44:25 EST From: Helchat@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Avalon - Best MAKE OUT! Bitter Moon (1993) (Hugh Grant and Kristen Scott Thomas erotic thriller) 2, Phil Manzenaras hands have appeared on which BBC comedy series..? Red Dwarf 3, Which comedy duo once burst on stage to the strains of 'The In Crowd' and played former Roxy members as tramps living in an unspecified coastal town....? Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer (Who occasionally used to perform in Bryan Ferry masks) 4, Michael Kamen, who collaberated with Bryan on Sonnet, provided orchestration on the lp S&M.....But with which band was he working? Metallica (Kamen's website incidentally is cool. He responds to emails personally and with great humour) 5. Which famous visitor to Luton airport appeared in the Sign of The Times promo? Lorraine Chase (who allegedly, along with Bryan, got heavily shat upon by the birds used in said promo) 6. Bryan Ferry joined Dire Straits John Illsley (and others) to form a company called Dalentrys in order to produce what? Doctor Who (according to one reference book they both had to take out second mortgages to raise the cash....they ended up attempting to sue the BBC for reasons that would confuse even a Timelord). ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V6 #526 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
