I'm feeling a bit under the weather today, and quite frankly, I don't have the energy to think. But I can contribute the following factoids, from a rather ancient version (ca 1991?) of the Rolling Stone Album Guide (for all that's worth): They used the lyrics from this song (specifically the following: "Sentimental fool Knowing that fate is cruel You ought to forget it Yes, I know it's true I've seen what love can do But I don't regret it") to sum up B. F.'s doomed romantic approach to music and life. Not a bad summary, all in all. Also, they give Siren five stars (if I remember correctly, not having it in front of me) and rate it the most highly of any of the Roxy albums. That baffles me a bit, and many others here I suspect, though certainly not all. And fair enough. If I were to speculate, I would guess they rate it highly since it's a little more accessible than the early albums, particularly the first two. I'm not sure I'd argue it's more "commercial" though, and that's to its credit. Anyone agree or disagree? In particular I need to go back and listen to this song, as all of your comments have inspired me. It might be particularly interesting when heard through the haze of cold medication. I'm putting my head back down now. Talk quietly amongst yourselves. If I were to speculate, I would guess they rate it highly since it's a little more accessible than the early albums, particularly the first two. I'm not sure I'd argue it's more "commercial" though, and that's to its credit. Anyone agree or disagree?" I agree with 'under-the-weather' Susan (get well soon my fellow Midwestern USA-er) about Siren being "more commercial" and to me, blander. The only songs that stand out for me are LITD and .... the OUTSTANDING & AWESOME, "Both Ends Burning." The rest of the album I always skipped over -however- I feel I must revisit "Sentimental Fool" & "Just Another High" due to the various comments read on this list on these songs. My interest is perked. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Nov 2001 10:21:01 EST From: InterEireann@aol.com Subject: Fwd: [AVALON] re:titles That has to be one of the funniest mis-heard titles. When Siren came out, I placed it firmly in the "pop" category and for that reason probably did not focus on the less poppy songs on the album, which I did not think were up to the earlier Roxy standards. Just Another High is belter in the car. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2001 15:34:06 -0000 From: "=?us-ascii?Q?Therese_O'Donnell?=" Subject: [AVALON] Sentimental Fool This is one of my all-time favourite Roxy songs. The eerie opening is fab and in a strange way can remind me of Ladytron (Maybe that's just weird lateral thinking on my part). Ferry's voice seems particularly plaintive on this song, even by his own angst-ridden standards. It's particularly noticeable in the 'How could I believe again' line. I liked the competing choruses especially with the horrible mocking tone - the cynical sneer is tangible. Sadly I never had the privilege of hearing it live and would love to (hope Ron & the boys are reading this) even though it might have been messed up - I think the drama of the song sounds as if it was well conveyed by the late entrance of BF on stage. I really like the Siren album and I have to say that I thought SF fitted in well with the overall 'feel' of the album. Many reviewers on the list have mentioned it as a bit of a companion piece to JAH, but it strikes me that in sentiment it's very close to 'End of the Line' and their proximity to each other on the album reinforces this for me. Both have a sense of turning back and introspection on the part of the narrator. I think that one of the best opening lines ever is 'Think I'll walk out in the rain' of EOTL - it shows such despair. Whereas, SF is about passion to me ('she'll show you what living's for') - a little bit angry and a little bit defiant. I love the pair of songs together. Taken with JAH I think you get three common stages in the end of a relationship - disbelief/despair, anger and realisation of mistakes made. The end of SF I think has been described as plodding but I personally love the descending notes, again they sum up a mood of confusion and directionless emotion. The thudding end is great too - again brings a lot of drama to the song. The true slap in the face. It's interesting that this is a co-written song as it would be so identified with Ferry's lovelorn matinee idol image. Perhaps it's more revealing about Mackay - never underestimate quiet people. If you need to be convinced by that just thinking about the emotion in the live 'Tara' and indeed the mysterious opening of 'Ladytron' (knew I'd get there in the end).
