There are better equipped than I here to astound you with those answers. 4 Which Roxy/Ferry album had the lyrics written in Bryan’s handwriting in the inner sleeve. Bette Noir 7 What did Andy Mackay’s Resolving Contradictions LP have on the rear sleeve on it’s 1990 re-release that symbolised the change in political climate in the communist world from when he made the album in 1978. Well I remember the back cover looking like the back of a canvas with some things pinned on it (snaps, money etc) The front featured Tienamen Square (and I would have guessed that the terrible events there may have had something to do with it). Oh I don't know. All reference to Mao was removed? 10 What colour was the Siren album originally intended to be? Greeny yellow. Occasionally comes up for auction. 13 What is the only song that Bryan Ferry has written and released in > Waltz time. Zamba (Only answered this because it's one of my all time favourites) 18 What type of bird (the one on the right) is on the cover of Avalon? A funny little falcony/kestrel thing, which I think may have been from Antony/Anthony Price's coup. 20 Bryan Ferry has used the lines “chained and bound” on 3 different songs, what are they? Sign of the Times, Slave to Love, Mamouna, and every one of Martino's postings. 24 What is Bryan’s job description on his passport? Composer, but he had to change it because his passport expired before he'd finished composing anything. 36 Roxy Music’s Chance Meeting was inspired by the film Brief encounter. What is so unusual about the script of this film? Was it written at a railway station after the scriptwriter had been to see a film at the local Roxy? 38 Manalo Blahnik is thanked on Bryan Ferry’s Another Time Another Place album. Who is he and what does he do? Manolo is God of Shoe Design and has recently withdrawn his design for an unfeasibly sharp stiletto heel that was so thin it would ruin both carpets and floors but also posed a security threat when worn on aircraft (true) His shoes are described as pure sex. He is one of the guys around the pool on Another Time Another Place. 41 What has been an annoyance for Antony Price on the credits for the Roxy/Ferry sleeves? One minute he's credited as Antony, the next Anthony and occasionally Shirley. 43 Simon Puxley also worked with which Scottish singer? Lulu? 44 It is said in an interview that Bryan Ferry was playing an archive Roxy song in his car and one of his sons said “that’s really good dad when are you going to release it” Bryan replied “I did, over 20 years ago” What was the song? Out of the Blue 45 Bryan Ferry co wrote The Right Stuff with The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. What was the original title of The Right Stuff when it was a Smiths b-side? Money Changes Everything 46 Bryan Ferry appeared in a woman’s magazine that features full frontal naked men. What was the magazine and year? 1974 Playgirl. He was wearing a black velvet jacket embroidered with little rosebud flowers and a blue denim shirt and more slap than the Playgirl lovely he was draped over. I have this in my Roxy scrapbooks somewhere. 47 What film did Bryan Ferry pass the screen test for but was turned down by the lead actor Sylvester Stallone as Sly’s previous films had flopped and he didn’t want to take the chance with a rock star as supporting actor? Cliffhanger. Sly dumped him off the project after seeing him in The Infamous French Soap (Beurk? Beurk? Are you there Beurk?) 48 What song has Bryan Ferry sung live the most? It feels like the dreaded Jealous Guy but more likely to be Do the Strand? And I don't have time on my hands today O'Brien, so any repercussions and I'm blaming you! Many moons ago when I worked in an auto -store, the then new to the market 8 tracks were the "in thing" for peoples vehicles. The tape itself is merely 1 tape joined to form a continuous loop (the tape was fed from the inner of the tape spool and passed out round some spindles, across the tape head and back to the outside of the spool). The tape was basically divided into 4 tracks (x 2 for stereo). At the end of each complete loop, by means of an electronic signal the tape head would physically move down to position (track) 2 on the tape and so on through 4 track positions 1,2,3 and 4. So, to listen to a whole album the tape would have to loop 4 complete times. If, say an album had 12 songs, then each track would (normally) carry 3 songs. One could never select a particular album track, you could only move the head up and down with the 1234 overide button and wait for your favorite song to come around on the loop (unless you happened to land straight on it). There was no fastforward/rewind facility. Although the 8 track sound quality at the time was superior to then infant car cassette players, they suffered a design problem when after perhaps a few months play the tapes would tend to tighten and users would experience "wow and flutter". Even the most expensive models at that time i.e Motorola and Radiomobile could not overcome this basic flaw and I believe domestic 8 track players too suffered the same problem. (I remember them being background music in some Pubs and the Landlords being unhappy with their recent investments). For this reason and a much improved sound quality, versatility and reliability from cassette players I believe 8 tracks began to disappear circa 1976 onwards. For anyone who may still be conscious :- In the shop I had ATAP, TFT, Roxy 1,2,3 and I think 4. and I used to play (promote hopefully) them to demonstrate the equipment, although it didn`t always endear me to the staff or customers. One lady member of staff though adored These Foolish Things (and Mr F.) so I always had at least some support if I played Mr Ferry (although she drew the line at customers on a Monday morning being made to listen to stories about blow up dolls etc.) If anyone still has Roxy/Ferry 8 tracks then I would bet they are quite rare. I doubt wether any Roxy albums after Siren was ever released in the said format, only on cassette. (Probabily Mr Reecy might know different) Anyway Tracy, If your 8 track is still working properly along with those old tapes then I would consider that remarkable and quite unique. Well worth keeping. Chrissie kills this song. It sounds like shes in pain! 3 Jimmy Page & Robert Plant My Buckets Got A Hole In It yes. very Rock n Rolly. 4 Johnny Hallyday Blue Suede Shoes good but not as strong as Elvis. 5 Elton John Whole Lotta Shakin Going On ok, but too much echo Piano is obviously excellent and I wouldnt expect anything less from Elton on the piano. 6 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Blue Moon of Kentucky ok 7 Van Morrison & Carl Perkins Sittin On Top Of The World Yes, good. Although Im not familiar with the song I have seen Carl Perkins perform live and its good by those standards. 8 Bryan Ferry Dont Be Cruel yes, I like this very much. It has Elvis beat etc (of course with Scotty Moore and DJ Fontana as the musicians on it what else can you expect!) and Bryans voice which has that something which I cant explain, but it makes me smile. 9 Bob Dylan Red Cadillac and A Black Moustache Im not sure about this one as Im not familiar with the song and havent listened to Dylan before. Ok is the best I can do. 10 Eric Clapton & The Impressions Just Walkin In The Rain again Im not familiar with the song so Im not sure about this one. 11 Matchbox Twenty Lonely Weekend dont like this one. It sounds too modern in parts. Not a style Id like to listen to much. 12 Sheryl Crow Who Will The Next Fool Be not keen on this either. It doesnt particularly scream out Sun Records! to me. 13 Chris Isaak It Wouldnt Be The Same Without You I like this very much. It has a great 50s Sun sounds to it. Of course, Chris was influenced by Roy Orbison and has picked up some good sounds in his voice. 12 LIVE I Walk The Line not keen on this one. Im not familiar with the song or the artist. 13 The Howling Diablos Featuring Kid Rock Drinkin Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee nope, dont like this too kind of Hard Rock sounding for me. I apologise if Ive offended anyones musical tastes! And also apoligise for my lack of musical knowledge outside of Elvis and Bryan! Well, thats my humble opinion on it. My parents used to have an 8-track player in their little green mini. We would listen to Elvis' 40 Greatest Hits wherever we went. I can't remember any problems with it, but then it was so long ago. Yes, the player I have at the moment still works fine and I have a few tapes for it. I do plan to hang on to it. I also have a record deck that plays 78's - all three Elvis one's that I own! My dad had a portable 8-track player too (although I'm not sure if he sold it) - that's when portable meant the size of 4 house bricks though!! Anyway, thanks again, Tracy >From: "Nigel Hollis" >Reply-To: avalon@smoe.org >To: "avalon digest" >Subject: [AVALON] 8 Tracks >Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2001 16:20:31 -0000 > >Tracy wrote :- > >"I also have an 8-track player so I can actually play them..." > >Many moons ago when I worked in an auto -store, the then new to the market >8 >tracks were the "in thing" for peoples vehicles. > >The tape itself is merely 1 tape joined to form a continuous loop (the tape >was fed from the inner of the tape spool and passed out round some >spindles, >across the tape head and back to the outside of the spool).
