While I was looking up his DOB I was reminded that Moore was briefly Elvis's first manager. He took a 10% commission. Andreas "Colonel" "Tom Parker" van Kuijk proudly claimed on film to take 25%. He actually took 50%. While I'm blathring: GRT is a lousy title for a Sun tribute. It was EP's second Sun single and no particular kind of breakthrough record (#3 on the Memphis C&W chart, to be precise). The song was a hit for it's composer, Roy Brown (Apparently he wrote the words on a paper sack; Same story as Blue Suede Shoes (Carl Perkins's sack being specified as a potato one)), in 1947, and an enormous hit in 1948 for Wynonie Harris, who, allegedly, had been offered it, when Brown was unknown, but declined. Nick Tosches says that Elvis learned the song from Harris's version (#1 on the Billboard 'race' chart). ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Nov 2001 05:59:54 EST From: Chandla911@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Everyone's favourite Listed in the lower reaches of last night's TV airing on Channel 4 of the Top 10 TV Heart-throbs, they showed Ian McShane (for it was he) in his famous (in Britain) TV roles before bowing out with his performance of Avalon. I'm not a huge Elvis fan, and I loathe the Elvis >cult thing , but I can see that his talent was unique. > I'm certainly not contemptuous of Elvis, but I don't agree with this. Apart from his first recordings, the ones for Sun - and we should remember he recorded very little for them, he was on a big label befor you could say Colonel Parker - I don't think the 'body of work' is convincingly great. And I do think his performance style tends towards 'generalisation' rather than specific, detailed interpretation. ( Sinatra is problably the master of detailed lyric reading, where the individual implications of each line, such as they are, are high-lighted, without the arching unity of the song being lost.) We should remember that Elvis at his best is essentially a white blues singer, and ( ignoring race, though in '50s America that was impossible, which is the whole reason for the Elvis phenomenon) I think his contemporaries, Ray Charles, B. B. King and Fats Domino among others, are much deeper, more intensely emotional performers than he, doing the same kind of music to my mind more richly. Often, at the end of an Elvis record I have no idea what the song was actually about, except some obvious general impression that it's happy or sad. With Ray Charles, I get every nuance, without the music losing energy or excitement. For sheer Rock and Roll thrilldom, Ray's I GOT A WOMAN is far more thrilling than even Elvis' earthiest stuff. And in the eighties, B. B. King did an album of country blues, LOVE ME TENDER, which is not one of his greatest records by any means but which contains a version of the title song I much prefer to the Elvis' rendition. But, I would repeat, this is not to say I don't like Elvis' work, I do! Directed by Robert Wise, whom I respect a lot. Wise edited Citizen Kane. How much more impressive can a guy's resume get? ;-) The man has worked on everything from The Sound of Music to The Andromeda Strain. He recently was given the chance to do a director's version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. He'd been rushed to complete the film in '79 and was never very happy with it, considering it incomplete. Next Tuesday his completed version of the film will be released here in the States on DVD. Still no word on it's airing but keeping my eyes peeled. KBP, you made my mouth water mentioning Red,Hot,& Blue. Haven't paid them a visit in a while & it's always a pleasure to sit back & hear all that good music while you observe all the posters on the wall. Some are so old, that it listed being able to see a blues ccncert for $5.00. Can you believe ? I guess though $5.00 was a lot of money even then.I wonder if J.H.ever got Bryan in to eat ribs when he was in the South. What pray tell can you see Bryan with a rack of ribs before him. Think he could do the all you can eat style? I also have an 8-track player so I can actually play them. As far as I can tell they are called 8-tracks because you can listen to any one of 8 tracks at any one time. On my player there are buttons numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4. You can choose one of each of these buttons for 4 different tracks. If you press the same button again, you get another track (ie two tracks per button =8). I hope this makes sense. I would also be interested in any Ferry/Roxy 8-tracks if anyone has any and wishes to part with them? How about you Reecey?
