I don't necessarily agree. When anyone joins a public mailing list, they owe it to themselves to lurk for a while and survey the tone (as well as noting which subjects and threads have been debated to death) before posting. When I first joined a little more than two years ago, I spent ages silent, observing the conduct of the regulars. Certain facts made themselves known at that time. Colleen is an incredibly articulate, rude, insightful, pragmatic viper, prone to hissing and sniping. It is not for me to chastise the Avalon community for allowing her to exist prior to my subscribing. If I had any intent of becoming an active participant in this community, it would mean dealing with Colleen. We've had a couple of civil disagreements and she's spat at me a couple of times. So what? It's just like any other forum. Spot the friendly people. Spot the ones with the connections. Spot the funny people. Spot the ones with the amusing sigs. Spot the ones who kant spel. Spot the ones who are rude. Colleen is rude. I'd prefer not to cross her. But I don't see enough hours in my day to go around worrying about her. Nor censoring her on a (currently) unmoderated forum. > (much snipped and disagreed with) > >One truth of this forum is that we can absolutely compile a list here, of >the folks that Colleen has rudely and unfairly Attacked. This is, like it or not, a community. Not everyone is obligated to be nice to everyone else and play with the same rules of logic and ettiquette as you. I've made a few friends onlist who have written me after a few onlist scraps to say "wow, I can't believe what that idiot said." But any idiots in question probably have just as many friends who say "wow, you sure told that asshole Grant off." (more snipped) >But to those who think I was out of line -- I really want you to Ask >yourself where you were when Colleen was writing rude comments about my >PENIS on this list??? Why was that okay with you? I'm not saying that she didn't say it, but I didn't notice it. Nor do I care to review the public record. (Certainly not when you didn't provide issue numbers!) But, much in the same way 98% of Avalon looks the other way whenever I have words with anyone, I must have looked the other way when Colleen commented on your penis. Because, and please don't take this the wrong way, I genuinely do not care about your penis, and consider any arguments regarding such organ none of my business, and between you and Colleen. If you and Colleen were having this argument in my favorite restaurant, would all the patrons be obligated to separate you? I miss a lot of stuff on Avalon. Your attack -- which didn't bother me either, as I don't feel it is any of my business -- was impossible to miss. If you attracted unfavorable commentary because of it, it's probably because of the way you responded. In any case, it's an argument for a moderated Roxy forum. I've been reading the back issues of the Fripp "Elephant Talk" newsletter and, whenever a thread gets unweildy, the moderator stops it, and personal attacks (ideally) never see print. The downside to this is a mammoth list of dozens of forbidden topics which, as a KC newbie, I'm curious about. If we were to compile a list of beaten-to-death threads that show up here every so often (Horoscope and Jerry Hall come to mind), we'd be barring conversations that newbies are interested in learning more about. But other than that, moderation does have undeniable advantages, and it would solve your complaint. (I'm not saying that Avalon should be moderated; but perhaps an alternate, moderated forum could be created.) I found it an interesting read. Articulates the feelings that some people have about this list, though I wouldn't use those exact words. I'm not a 100% content with the content myself, but oh well, as time has gone by I let most of it slide like water off my back rather than let it get to me. It would be nice to get some discussions without having 99.01% of it going straight to the garbage can because of the vitriol that our *ahem* more prolific posters send out. However my life will still continue with or without that. I do find it funny that there is a double standard when it comes to posting on this list. Secondly I find it amusing that these people who fire off rude posts to the more...carefree posters take it upon themselves to play netcop for fear that discussions might *gasp* create more traffic that certain people don't care to read. Like what these self-deputized keepers of the email peace have to say is more important than a newbie's or a lurker's... Riiiiiiiiiiiight. If any of this makes sense, excellent! My post has hit its mark. If not and you feel the need to howl online at me for what foul, ignorant opinions that I hold about a mailing list for a band that I hold very, very, very dear...save it.
