But now I find myself happily singing out "The Same Old Scene"(hey, I find it damn catchy, I like Both Ends Burning, so what the hell?), and find the video for The Main Thing reeeeeeeally sexy. Bryan's work circa Bete Noire, might have been his commercial peak, but I was pleased to find him at a good level of weirdness(and lyrical minimalism, etc) for Mamouna. Of course, having Eno contribute "sonic awareness"(whatever that is), couldn't hurt. As Time Goes By? Not experimental, commercial definitely, but also quite enjoyable. That Ferry made a record like this doesn't come as a surprise given some of his earlier work with Roxy(2HB) and his solo albums(These Foolish Things, Another Time Another Place, esp.). What's really concerned me is not Ferry's changing style, or the market he's aiming for but rather that he's become pretty non-prolific, especially when compared to his workaholic days of '71-'74. I can understand if he doesn't reach that level of output however, with him getting older, wife, kids, and all... One of the things I admire in Ferry's work is that he has never stayed for long in the same place, musically. I don't think, either, that a song like Avalon comes just by luck, or just by pursuing it. Besides, someone who works into something (a record, in Bryan's case) for 7 or 8 years deserves my silent admiration. I don't think Mamouna had a highly commercial purpose. Dr Jerry Hall and Dr Yan-Ling Feng have found a way of eggs in female mice reproducing their own chromosomes. Although the experiments have only been carried out on mice, researchers believe it could also work in humans. The doctors, from the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Genetics in Los Angeles, managed to make eggs in female mice duplicate the necessary number of chromosomes to start cell division - the beginning of human life. Although the research is based on mice, previous findings have found similarities mice eggs and human eggs. In normal human reproduction, an egg would carry 23 pairs of chromosomes and the sperm which would fertilise it would carry another 23 sets. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Oct 2001 20:15:11 EDT From: ASchulberg@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] off topic: King Crimson In a message dated 10/22/2001 5:11:42 PM Eastern Daylight Time, jackson.robert.r@worldnet.att.net writes: > Reserved seats for that same show are > $27.50, so it's almost twice as much for the GA tickets (of which the > Warfield only sells 300 for each show). Some of his pre-_As Time Goes By_ covers are bland or silly or pointless (give me some credit; I'm holding my tongue here), but this one (like "Sympathy For The Devil") is a perfect match of singer, arranger, and song. I love the liquid, rippling arrangement which gathers momentum. It's a full, complete sound, which was brought to the fore in its placement on the ATGB tour. After a few songs from that [then] new album, the sonic difference between those thin arrangements and this robust one was easily heard. It's as if the band was suddenly switched from mono to stereo mode (apologies to those of you who don't understand the Olde Time Talk). I also remembered, listening to it again the other day, that it was the favorite songs of one of my aunts. "At my funeral," she'd say, "I'm going to have a violinist at my grave. And he's going to play 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes'." She died suddenly a few years back, but not so suddenly that, unbeknownst to the family, she snuck off to the family funeral home director, picked out her casket, and left the details re: the violinist with him. The day we buried her it was so bitterly cold that the violinist couldn't bring his instrument outside for fear it would crack, so he serenaded us indoors as we said our last good-byes. For my aunt, whose house resembled that of a character in _Married To The Mob_, right down to the plastic on the furniture and the etched flamingo mirror (and I say that with great affection), the tuxedo'd violinist, the Baroque room at the funeral home, my aunt in her gilded gown, and the grieving family all around all added up to The Perfect Touch. I'm considering Ferry's version at mine. Ok, I'm sitting in the living room playing with my 11 month old daughter listening to Disc 2 of the above show. Then, "For Your Pleasure" comes on and it was so cool to hear it live from that time period. But, I'm not gettin' any goosebumps yet....then it merges into Diamondhead and I just about had a heart attack!! That was so cool!!! I never knew they did something like that live. That is exactly what I wanted them to do on their current tour, but I suppose it would have been sacraliges to do a non-Roxy song on a re-union tour. Anyways, it was a nice surprise to hear something like that. Can't wait for Baby Sami to go to bed tonight so I can blast Diamondhead with the headphones on!!!!
