Stump suggested this track as a kind of "idiot's guide" to what Roxy Music was about. I have my complaints about the book, but indeed, if I were only to introduce Roxy Music to somebody with one single track, I would choose Dream Home. It's maybe the best pop lyric I have ever read, even though I don't get all the puns &c. Here, Ferry's unanswered obsession 'n longing topic is going to its extreme. The inflatable doll strikes me as very eerie, a lifeless object being at the centre of tenderness, an outlet for what cannot be realized with other human beings. Alienation and sin, but also the narcissistic thrill of one's own breath inside of the cherished object. Bends the meaning of the expression "bl*w j*b"... Musically, the VIVA version is great, but the studio original captures the lyric perfectly for me. As Ferry has grown older and his voice sounds different now, his contemporary performances have added another interesting touch to this. The song is one of my favourite songs of all time. It's hard to come up with something more unique than this track. I remember when I was 16 or 17, 1974 or 75, trying to explain to a member of the older generation why I liked Roxy. His position was that pop music had nothing at all to offer, and us young folk ought to be getting into "proper" music (i.e. classical/opera). I told him I liked Ferry's lyrics because they had "social comment". I wanted to explain what IEDHAH said to me about the alienation, and materialism of modern life. But I didn't have the vocabulary (and anyway I was a little bit drunk!). So I gave up and told him I couldn't explain what I meant. He chalked this up as a great victory for his point of view; "You young people can never justify your claims for pop lyrics" etc.. I was left feeling stupid and bitter, but I knew I was right! Hurrah! At long last, Colleen has voiced a view I don't concur with!!! Yes, it IS fun to bash the management but entertainment acts do NOT just wait for an invite, they hire publicists and pluggers to make sure they get on these shows IF that's what they want. These people CAN'T work miracles (a recent UK TV programme showed how a famous bald, little, old English magician could NOT get on US TV when he went incognito, regardless of how many publicists he used, BECAUSE the US demands youth and looks) but there is a whole industry of charlatans out there making a mint. Either they do successfully influence the guest list of shows OR they get paid a load of money while the shows just invite who they like. If it's the former, WHY didn't Roxy think to use publicists who knew what they were doing? If it's the latter, let's bash the publicists AND the management. At the end of the day, Roxy did the tour for money, they charged high seat prices in order to achieve their guaranteed fees, they skimped on promotion because they knew the promoter would pay them anyway and now they've made their money, they are resting and will wait for the live DVD to help boost next year's pension/interest income. Love them. May I add, too, that possibly the promoter (SFX for North American shows) felt there was no need to hype the band beyond a certain point since this was viewed as a one-time farewell tour? In other words: Why spend X dollars to attract Y number of spectators when X-minus-Z dollars will produce the desired Y number? Perhaps the promoter decided there was no point in spending additional promo bucks, yielding diminishing returns, in any attempt to build a fan base for future shows. The mysterious money grabbers. Convention-defying ? Dr Feelgood ? My God, whatever next ? They'll be progressive before you know it !! S8^O I am a little surprised though, that a clinically-diagnosed pub-rocker like yourself could be immune from the undoubted kick-ass nature of 'Status Quo Live', recorded over three nights at Glasgow Apollo as late as October 1976. I've never listened to them; can you suggest me something to start with? Even more so than with Roxy, it's difficult to recommend a single "representative" album and most people have their favourite eras, but I would concur with Rob's suggestions as to the 'key' albums, i.e. 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' / 'Larks' Tongues In Aspic' / 'Red' / 'Discipline'. These have all been re-issued several times now on CD - the best sound quality is on the recent '30th Anniversary' HDCD remasters (like the Roxy HDCD reissues, these came out on miniature LP sleeves as well as jewel cases). The earlier 'Definitive Remasters' are (sadly) no longer the best available, but they are still a huge improvement on the original editions and you might find them going cheaply in sales and second hand shops. There are a few CD compilations around, of which 'Sleepless - The Concise King Crimson' (released in 1993) is as good an overview as you will get on a single disc, even though it takes a terrible liberty by savagely editing 'Starless' (imagine someone fading out 'For Your Pleasure' just as Bryan sings the first 'ta-ra' or 'Mother Of Pearl' after the 'party' section and you'll understand what I mean...!) If you're really not sure if Crimso is for you I would recommend starting with this one. Regards, Ivor. n.p. Second Sight is now being replaced by Soho Vice in that particular time slot and that "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" in Sweden has lowered it's highest price from 1 million dollars to 300,000 dollars.
