All The Way From Memphis > Firstly I must admit to not being a completist sort of guy, I posses everything Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry have ever released. All singles, Island albums, Polydor re-issues, Polydor CDs, Virgin CDs, Latest Re-Masters Jewel cases & Mini Card sleeves (god they see us coming don't they). I've done this because I love all these albums always have/will. This also goes for Bowies 70s output, 71-80 not one poor album, like Ferry, and like Ferry some stronger than others but all have stood the test of time. As for buying records because some-one you like plays on them, NOT GOOD ENOUGH, have a listen first & if you do like it then buy it, I don't own an Andy McKay CD, heard Resolving Contradictions once, did nothing for me, I do own 801 live, album & CD, Why? because it's a great album, also Phils Diamond Head has some great moments. I think first & foremost I've always been a fan of Roxy Music & Bryan Ferry, why? Because I love his voice, writing, style of covers (These Foolish Things beats Pin-ups & Rock n Roll, for me because it sounded kitch on release, still does, it never belonged to it's time) and like Bowie in the 70s his ability to span many musical genres. As for Andys apearance on MOTT (a great album awaiting re-mastering) , he only appeared on 1 track as far as I can hear, hardly a good reason to spend hard earned pocket money/Saturday job money at the time. I would like to add all this is IMHO, but I've never had a humble opinion, so there you go! On the whole I'd prefer my live releases to be warts and all, but this particular problem makes me think; maybe they ought to overdub a bit just this once! Not possible when you're a 15 year old who's pocket money is burning a hole, because one of your heroes (the aforementioned Mr Mackay)is on that piece of vinyl by Mott. It's only a 7" single. You gotta have it. Besides, you may miss out on a whole other world of stuff that leads on from that. So much to discover, through 'connections', sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but it's fun trying. Surely that's what pocket money was for ? (well, that, along with Spanish Gold sweet tobacco). No matter, at school there was the Roxy/Bowie/Bolan/Alice mob, and we'd swap and tape and argue (in the time honoured 'my fave band is better than your fave band' fashion) instead of doing things like homework. Hey, nothing's changed ! Not sure what those other kids did, you know the ones, with their Genesis/ELP/Yes stuff. Got depressed, probably. (The last statement was deliberately put in to goad Ivor). They have a really interesting deal going, too. Inside the CD there was a card with a user name and password. With the CD in your drive, you can log into their web site and download shows from the current tour. Not a bad deal, if you ask me. The sticker on the CD says "Buy the Crowes, Get the shows." I wish more bands had this kind of attitude about distributing their live performances. - -Rob ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2001 04:12:15 -0700 From: "R. Hopefully I'm not going to offend any die-hard Crimheads here when I say that, IMO, there are four definitive King Crimson albums, representing what I consider to be the strongest lineups of the band. These are, In The Court of the Crimson King, the debut KC album. Hendrix was raving about this one shortly before his death. One of the most impressive debut albums of all time. Then Larks' Tongues in Aspic from the 5-piece Crimson of '73. Red, the Crim power trio. And finally, Discipline, the debut from the 80's four-piece version of King Crimson. These four albums, IMO, are the essential King Crimson albums. Their current work is well worth checking out, too. Not as star-studded as the Tony Levin/Bill Bruford Crim lineup of a few years ago, but very strong indeed. Their last studio album, The ConstruKCtion of Light, is a keeper. - -Rob At 10:18 AM 10/18/2001 +0000, you wrote: >I know there are many K.C. fans on this list. I never really got all the Monty Python bits, but I appreciated it. I still say the finest piece of TV ever on PBS was I, Claudius. It put to shame everything that was called television at that time. I saw (and liked Rock Follies when I was living in Los Angeles (76-78). I wanted the program to go on, but one night the PBS in LA stopped showing it. I do remember Rula Lenska ( and this was before the hair commercials). I did not realize the Andy McKay connection until later. I'm not sure Roxy had any invitations for any of the late (or late late) night talk shows here in the US. I know it's fun to bash his management, but if the band wasn't invited to be on any of these shows there is not much more they could have done.
