But - I would suggest starting with the early 80s band's album - "Discipline", and follow that up with the heavier sounds of "USA" or "RED" from the mid-70s band. If you like a more retro progressive sound similar to PFM, Moody Blues, or Yes, you may like the first album - "In The Court of the Crimson King", with spacey lyrics and the classic Mellotron sound (a keyboard that sounds kind of like an orchestral string section) . Most of their catalog has been remastered lately, and the improvement in the sound over the "Editions EG" versions are dramatic. Look for the DGM versions if at all possible. -= )-(eather =- roxylia@freemail.it wrote: >I know there are many K.C. fans on this list. Hi, fellow avalonians,I think some verses on "Mamouna" are pretty good; for example: "No way out from this place/ my neighbourhood,/house and garden topiary/ just like Hollywood". BTW, is "garden topiary" what I think it is? Does Ferry have "garden topiary"? I mean, is he rich enough to pay an army of gardeners to take care of his topiary? More: the "chained and bound"... In his lasts albums he's always talking about pain, control, confussion, and so on. I think another good lines are these: "the hanged man card,/ the sacrifice, / the change of heart". BTW, he's always talking of these kind of things, horoscopes, etc. I suppose he believes in it. I would suggest him to name his next (rock!!?) album "Lybra". It's a nice name, isn't it? Though astrological names ("Horoscope") don't seem to bring him much luck! If an album hadn't moved in a while (it was pretty arbitrary) it went into the "Sold by the pound" bin. Thats where I found the only American copy of The Sadistic Mika Band I have ever seen, as well as such gems as Roger Moons albums (anybody know about him?) and all of the Adrian Boult recordings of Ralph Vaughan Williams symphanies in glorious Mono. It was also a good way for a broke teenager to explore odd corners of music, such as Nonesuch's Real Music of the Bahamas, Vol.2 (lost a lot of its appeal since I stopped getting high...), King Sunny Ade, and Silly Wizard. I tried to find out what this stirring song was about with the help of a dictionary, but still could not work it out really, because I mis-heard the decisive line with the subject of the song : "Inflatable dawn" ! Of course I had no idea what that was supposed to mean, so the song left me with a sense of wonder and amazement, I was not surprised that an inflatable dawn blew his mind. Now, with the real lyrics understood, I think this song is a masterpiece, quintessential Roxy Music. I watched it again performed on the "Total Recall" video and marveled at the religious intensity maintained by the whole band ,but Bryan in particular. With the background of the meaning of course this can only be interpreted as the ultimate tongue in cheek humour. A reflection on the condition of modern humanity: The intensity of religious needs and feelings is there unchanged, but our rational mind has thrown a spanner into the works. "Is there a heaven - I'd like to think so", but I don't know. In the absence of a real basis for religious intensity the feelings get redirected onto trivial "essential" comforts of modern living and sexual pleasures totally devoid of interpersonal relationships. This is a marvelous joke that makes me giggle underneath the goose bumps produced by the menacing intensity of the song. Nevertheless I think the melancholic mood of the music also is in part a serious reflection on a sad state of affairs, the laughter about the joke gets stuck in the throat. This all calling for the explosive outburst at the end of the song. BTW, I think with the looks of the period Bryan could have given Christopher Lee a run for his money in the count Dracula role.
