Therefore I offer a summation as follows. I'll convey that this piece's title is the sum of this piece's meaning. Straightforward. We all grew up with a 'Father Knows Best', 'Leave It To Beaver' and Hollywood's glamorous perfection drilled into our psyche. But the truthful undercurrent that was not presented, or not addressed, was the reality that the 'idealized' life, family, was not perfect. Try as anyone might, the more we strove to obtain that wonderful, seemingly perfect life, the more we became cognizant that life and its ideal are divided by disparity, and disenchantment grew with affluence and lost innocence. The world's plasticity became increasingly apparent, things are accessories, people became objects to manipulate in the pursuit of personal 'happiness'. Hence the lover, a blow-up doll, and its master who becomes the slave (and blew his mind). Best wishes. Definitely get "Hurt". Amazing album, with Chrissie Hynde & Herbie Flowers. It was released around the time Spedding was touring with Ferry for the "In Your Mind" tour. Spedding said, "Bryan's management (E.G.) wanted me to play on his tour so badly that I made them a deal. I would do Bryan's tour if they would put together a tour to promote 'Hurt' afterwards". Everyone I've recommended this album to, agree that it is fantastic. Journalist, Billy Sloan who interviewed Bryan in Copenhagen this week said "Bryan so obviously thrilled that Simple Minds has chosen to cover this song in particular with which Roxy close their current live set. I was hooked when I heard more of what he and his band was serving up. There was nothing like it on the radio at that time and come to think of not since. live vs. studio version(s) Both. The studio version: the vocal, the instrumentation, the chords, the atmosphere, all brilliant. Live version? Without a doubt the one on Viva!. They were obviously having a good night. People often say "they've heard" or "they understand" to try and attach some quasi official status to their statements. I think we need to take much of this with a grain of salt. When I see an annoucement from Virgin of a release date then I might believe an album is imminent. Same for a tour, when I see venues advertising BF dates I'll believe it. I still remember a letter from Jim Lawn ( head of fan club ) I received in April 1997 that said Bryan was ready to release an album in a few months. Well, I'm still waiting.
