He said that there was to be another greatest hits album out before Christmas and that they were going to do another 3 studio albums and tour next year - so Daniel A's wife should be happy. When challenged with the fact that doing a covers album is the act of a truly desperate man and usually only done to fulfil contractual obligations, Kerr waffled on about paying homage to the bands influences who he named as "Roxy Music, David Bowie and Lou Reed". I must have missed something. They played a Patti Smith song though. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2001 05:21:59 EDT From: Chandla911@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Irony and obscurity >From: "Martin Stockman" >Subject: Re: [AVALON] dont stop the dance >It was for irony's sake. Anymore than the mix and match tux and leather trousers (this tour AND last) were ironic. I love the guy to bits, but he just doesn't know what to wear for the best (my personal fave of late was the millennium eve (or was it a year too early?) concert at Greenwich - heavy grey overcoat, scarf and yellow gloves). He's in remarkable nick, but the silver suit was not becoming. I shall drop the next topic as it is so non-Roxy, but I am bizarrely chuffed by the fact NO ONE came back on my request for info on Pina. I asked if she was indeed Pina Kollars, Austrian or Irish, and not a dickie bird. A pessimist would interpret this as non-interest but, given the number of personal and group replies on Afro Celt Sound System, I can only conclude that I have found the artist too obscure even for Avalonians. Given the hordes who already knew of Senior Coconut and a host of other obscurities, this is an achievement of sorts... I agree - 'Mr. Price cum Hedi Slimane' is triumphant - he did get Mr. Ferry to wear that gaudy suit. My original point is, Mr. Ferry need not use immediate cheap embellishment to glam his existence. He bears elegance in his own right. The silver suit was little more than a poor attempt at trompe-l'oeil, unfortunately it didn't recapture the essence of the wearer (subject). Therefore, the suit is ironic because it portrayed the wearer in an unnatural light. Wearing said silver suit is not congruous with the futuristic rocker view presented on the first album. The silver suit was little more than a poor attempt at trompe-l'oeil... Therefore, the suit is ironic because it portrayed the wearer in an unnatural light. Cheap?? Dahrling it costs a fortune to look trashy these days. Unless of course you plump for a very dubious silver synthetic ensemble as I did, which Martino will attest would have been best viewed in very unnatural light. >its employment was totally unnecessary, useless and detracting from the grandeur that is Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music! I think the employment of something "very Roxy" was totally necessary, otherwise here we'd go again with the same old Ferry tux and leather trousers. And this wasn't a Ferry tour it was a Roxy tour. Roxy gigs have always been about the whole package, the set design and stage clothes being an integral part of it all. To hell with Ferry's everyday mufti, we needed a celebration of Roxy as a shiny new package. And that's quite literally what we got. Love it or hate it, he wore it well. As my old Mam used to say, "that Bryan Ferry, he'd look good in a bin bag". Now if you want to see the same suit looking absolutely pants on someone, check out Hamish Bowles editor of American Vogue. He really should know better. Yesterday morning came my Penthouse Perfection & A Rhapsody Divine Videos, and what a proffesional job you have done Mr Reece, 10/10 thank you. Where did the Royal Festival Hall footage come from it is so good (almost up to the Paris DVD standard). This morning the postie brought me my collection of CD tree'd items from Mr Sqires, full marks again, sound quality aside, the gem of this collection is Other Worldly Cool, the track listing is sensational 'Beauty Queen/Bogus Man/Ladytron/Dreamhome/ITIS? all in a row, takes me right back, when I was young(er), brilliant, a job well done. Thank you both for getting me out of Roxy cold turkey syndrome. As someone who wears two small, minor, dog-eared hats as both the maintainer of a Ferry & Roxy site and the designer of a few of them thar unofishial seedee releases, I wish to publically state my views on the history of using "sexy ladies" to push records and to defend my own product. Fortunately for you, it's been a slow day at work so I said far too much to post to Avalon, and consequently my dissertation can be found at this page: http://www.geocities.com/popocalypse/controversy.html Essential reading for anyone interested in the design aspect of Roxy and what this particular web page maintainer thinks about his own crappy site.
