Here you can specify the print size in cm or inches or whatever and the according resolution will be calculated automatically. To do this with some examples: Go to Heather's A-list page, http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/a-list.html open http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/gfx/boots/072301nyc-fr.jpg The image appears almost 4 times as wide as your screen and in my image editer shows up with a pixel size of 2865 x 1412. Now measuring other CD booklets I know, that the print size needs to be roughly 24 cm wide and 12 cm high. Typing a hight of 12 cm into the relevant boxe it recalculates the image width to be 24.35 cm and the resolution to be 298.873 dots per inch. Since nobody scans at such an odd resolution, we can safely assume that the image was scanned at 300 dpi, giving a print size of 24.26cm by 11.95 cm.. The best inkjet printers can make use of a resolution of about 250 dpi, but with anything from 150 dpi you hardly can tell a difference in the print quality. (With this operation in Photoshop you'll need to untick the "Resample Image" Option) The tray inserts need to be 15 cm wide and 11.7 cm high. If you now safe your image as a tiff image, the print size and resolution will be conserved, but unfortunately the web image format JPEG does not conserve this information. It is automatically assumed to be at a resolution of 72 dpi and if try to print the image straight from your browser, it will try to print it at a size of 101 cm by 49 cm, which of course is somewhat too big to fit into your jewel case. MS Photo Editor (part of Office 2000) can also do it and you can even find some free image editing programs out there, that can do the trick (eg Photo Wizard 1.0 ) which you can download at any Tucows web site. You can also resize images inserted into MS Word documents by clicking on the right mouse button and choosing "format object", size tab, but I'm not sure, whether you loose the image quality while doing so. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Heather James" To: Sent: Sunday, October 07, 2001 1:09 PM Subject: RE: [AVALON] OT: Cover scan question > Different people have different takes on this. I'm >confused as to why they are all different sizes? Speaking as someone who's been learning by trial and error for months, I think I can answer this... The sizes look different because your browser or your graphics program is going to display the image at the resolution size and not the print size. It's unfortunate for me, as a wanna-be designer, because the first couple of sleeves I assembled were in 600 ppi. The first sleeve I made was "Boston Pop," and the images I used for that were already in 600; I just "expanded" the canvas for the back cover at the same resolution to put the text in. Within a month, I received the images for Flat's "Cruel Fate" from someone, but the front and back of the booklet were two separate files, and so I had to use PhotoShop to make a printable copy. This, too, was 600 ppi. Since then, I tried reducing the image size (not the print size) of these documents to better facilitate sending them by e-mail and to take up less space when I tried posting them for other people to see. Unfortunately, you can only reduce -- or expand -- the size of an image so much before it starts to become visibly blurry. The effect on "A Pleasant Peninsula" is just about acceptable, since it has a "soft-focus" feel, but I'm still not entirely pleased with it. I was told early in September that CD sleeves should be between 150 and 200 ppi so I tried that. The most recent sleeve I did stayed at 150 ppi through every stage of its creation. It's easily managable when sending or posting and it prints just perfectly.
