Standing in the Moathouse lobby with my 14 year old son, I was pretty much minding my own business, when a guy tapped me shyly on the shoulder with the following question: "Sorry to be a nuisance, but are you related to Bryan Ferry?" Not too sure whether I should feel highly complimented or to ask him if he had left his glasses at home, I replied: "Fine chance, but no, I'm not. Why do you ask?" To which he answered. "Oh, sorry, but I thought you were Lucy Ferry and your lad was one of his sons..." Now, the only explanation I can find for that blantant mix-up is that, only minutes before, I was chatting to a bloke bearing an uncanny resemblance to Paul Thompson (namely Bob of L+B fame from Paul's forum)! We never got any further details, only whispers of The Bogus Man and Beauty Queen (with the lingering possibility of Just Like You and the dream of Eno). Maybe a certain member of the band wasn't willing to give that little bit more, a certain member who never made a promise or otherwise.... Thinking back to Tuesday night, the band DID seem to hurry things along. No between song banter (not that Ferry does much anyway), no "savouring of the moment". Quieter songs were started whilst the audience was still cheering (ASFE, Tara, FYP) which seemed a bit odd. They were probably up against it time-wise - the Apollo has a 10.30 curfew, and Roxy hit the stage late anyway (probably due to the camera set ups). The only extras we got were a few "thank yous" to crew from Ferry. Right up until the drum intro of FYP I was hoping for something different, but it never came. I almost got excited when I heard a funny siren-like drone that was very BOB Medley, but it was just the intro to BEB that didn't come out of the PA properly. We want blood, and I suppose we want it now! ;-) SimonG >>> Heather James 10/05 12:00 pm >>> If he's a "lying bastard" then so are the folks who run Manzanera.com - (Bill Mac?) as their news page also announced a bunch of "Extras" for the last 4 nights of the tour ... And so it came to pass that on Tuesday 2nd October 2001 this throw away line rang true. What started a mere stone's throw away down the road a little over 4 months previously was to end here in a blaze of glory in the full beam of DVD heaven. In-between we'd clocked up a brace of knobbled knees, an intestine's length of stomach complaints, two faintings and a multiple birth at the first notes of For Your Pleasure in Dublin. We witnessed Dorian Ferry's picture in the attic aging by the day as the rigours of touring bizarrely turned him ever youthful in the flesh. Andy visibly grew two inches in height as the rustiness of non regular playing fell away to reveal the proud classical musician that lay within. Paul grinned till bursting point, while Phil, momentarily taken over by the ghost of Pete Townshend (well he might not be dead but he doesn't look that well), actually did burst. Those girls just got madder and madder. And Speddo fell asleep. We had hi's we had lo and beholds. We had going to a go-go. We had Dreamhome nirvana We cemented friendships. We surmounted every obstacle put in our way, quite literally as we hurdled the seats at Glasgow. We had laughter by the skinful and tears by the bucketful. It was a roller coaster of a ride. But no-one wanted to get off. It was, as Charles Shar Murray said to me, just what he expected, but just what he wanted - pure unadulterated best of Roxy Music. Like Reecey, the last 4 months have melded into one for me, but strange little gems sparkle in the darkness. The idle banter between band and audience at TOTP2, the thrill of it all at Dublin before we had the faintest idea of the set list, the emotional homecoming at Newcastle, the whole of the New York first night gig and our own after show party, the Andy's cake fiasco that all ended happily ever after, the fantastic Remake/Remodel set after their support band had got us in the mood, the singing of Oh Yea by Ferry to Tara and Isaac in the pit at Glasgow 2, the "to London!" slap of the thigh by Ferry during "it's a pantomime", and of course the big pants (shame on you Slimane for not couturing more belt loops on the trousers). Gig of the tour? New York 1 by a mile Gig of the British tour? Tie between Glasgow 2 and Newcastle (I'm biased) Song of the tour? Both Ends Burning Most stylish man? Andy Best solo? This audience bootleg, of B to B+ quality, captures Roxy Music in Flint, Michigan on March 16, 1976 featuring the core four, Monsieur Eddie and Rick Wills on bass on the "Siren" tour. The material lasts just about an hour and has either been very skillfully edited (maybe between "Bittersweet" and "Out of the Blue") or reflects a gig for which Roxy may have been co-headliner. The performance is consistent with my opinion that at that point in time Roxy Music were the finest live band in the world. Grant has put together great cover art in the lovely nearly nude girl tradition featuring the breathtaking Sophie Marceau (spelling of last name not guaranteed). I will handle U.S. requests and would like to coordinate with someone to handle U.K./Europe distribution. Anyone who wants to help out please notify me. For requests, please contact me off-list. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Oct 2001 17:21:38 EDT From: CSOlive123@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] In Every Dream Home HI folks, does anyone know anything about the guitar Chris used in 'Dream Home'? It looked like a sitar, but I don't think it was. It had a very unique sound. Which Album is this 'Extras' track on is doesn't ring a bell with me? C'mon folks, time to move on surely? As for the After Show Party etc., as far as I know there wasn't one or at least if there was, I wasn't invited, miserable gits those Roxy Music chaps! I should imagine the band were that knackered they went home to bed. Those Avalonians who wanted to managed to get to the Stage Door/Back Stage and had photos taken which are on the viva site. A group of us, as has already been chronicled went back to the Novotel to reflect on the tour etc. I think that's it but others may be able to fill it out a bit more.
